1 August, 2011 Michiana Bicycle Association From the President: Greetings Fellow Riders: The summer is flying by. It went from cool to hot with a flip of the switch. Hopefully everyone has been able to spend some time on the roads and maybe take in a pay ride to support some of our local organizations. There is not a month of our summer that you cannot find an organized ride by some group that s no more than an hour s ride away. I have participated in many myself, as well as volunteered my time and help to contribute to the success of these rides. Did you ever stop to think of the large number of MBA members that volunteer their time to these rides for the enjoyment of making them a success and making sure other bicycle enthusiasts enjoy the sport that we all find so fulfilling. I applaud you all for giving so unselfishly. Progress continues to be made in our surrounding towns to make it safer to bicycle. On Sunday, July 10th, the Elkhart Truth ran an article from Mayor Moore's office announcing the approval of a plan submitted by the Pedal Panel for recommendations to implement at little to no cost a system to make Elkhart a more bicycle-friendly community. I was very pleased to be invited to help on this Panel and even more excited that it was accepted. I work in Elkhart and know how urgent it was to try to make it safer for bicyclists to make their way through the town. For many, this is their main mode of transportation. This ride was a great success last year. Ride the route, pick up cards at various locations, and see what Lady Luck has in store for you. After the ride enjoy snacks and drinks while the winners are announced. Great prizes! Wednesday, August 10, 2010 at 6 p.m. Swanson School, ride options of: 17, 22, 25, 29 miles. Ellen Halicki, Social Committee Chairman Mark & Madeline Lewis Laura Ray Larry Lynam & Gerry Welling Continued on page 4 1

4 From the President (continued from page 1): Our contributions are important to keep the momentum moving. We owe a big thanks to the Halicki's and Couch's for doing an excellent job on the cooking at the Summer Solstice ride at Madeline Bertrand Park again in June. The ride was a mixture of "wash and dry" along the way, but everyone enjoyed the food and friendship at the end. Those that did not come missed out on some good food. This is your last chance to volunteer for the Amishland ride on August 6 or 7th. Please contact Bonnie Yoder at marbonyod@att.net as we still have some key positions that need to be filled. Let us hear about a recent ride that you can share with us. We all like to hear about other rides out there that we might like to take part in. If you have anything other suggestions for club activities, we would like to hear about those too. Be Safe and Enjoy the Ride! Gail Weaver President Bike Michiana for Hospice will be held Sunday, September 11th at St. Patrick's County Park, South Bend, IN. Participants can register online at bikemichianaforhospice.org. The cost for riders who register before August 31 is $30; beginning September 1, the registration fee is $40. Riders 12 and under ride free. The ride features scenic routes through country roads, live entertainment at each support and guidance (SAG) stop as well as a post-ride party at St. Patrick's County Park with pulled pork, live music and a beer tent. Courses include a 3.5 to11.5 mile family ride (riders can choose the distance) as well as longer rides from 25 miles to 200 K (124 miles). Helmets are required for all riders. SAG stops will feature some of the area's leading restaurants including Fiddler's Hearth, LaSalle Grill, Indulgence Pastry Shop & Cafe, Yesterday's and Grande Mere Inn. Registration proceeds benefit The Hospice Foundation and Bike Michiana Coalition. Riders may also use an online donation form to raise funds for The Hospice Foundation. One hundred percent of those funds will go to support the Center for Hospice Care's mission to provide quality, compassionate care for anyone in need of hospice or palliative care services, regardless of their ability to pay. For more information regarding the event or registration, contact Debra Mayfield at AMISHLAND PACKET STUFFING We will be preparing packets for Amishland at the German Township Hall, Portage Avenue, South Bend, IN at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, August 2nd. 6 MBA 4-day Ride Galena, Illinois The club sponsored a 4-Day ride to Galena, Illinois June 30th to July 3rd. There were 19 riders on the trip. Early forecasts for the 4 days were for rain on multiple days however luck was with the group and there was no rain at all. There were some very hot days. The high was 98 degrees on Friday, July 1st. The high of 80 on Sunday actually felt quite comfortable. The Galena area is mostly farm fields similar to what you would see in Indiana, but the hilly terrain provides some terrific vistas as you look out over miles of fields and farms. The elevation ranged from 600 to 1,200 feet above sea level. There are relatively few flat stretches with long climbs alternating with miles of rollers. The Galena area offers many attractions including great shops and many restaurants so the time off the bike was also a lot of fun. Here are some pictures from the ride: Dick Kuehl The MBA does not approve of nohands riding, but look at that view! 6
