1 September, 2012 From the President: I ve spent the summer passing on many bicycle initiatives in Indiana and Michigan and think it is time to circle back to the MBA and some of the events of the summer. In June we had the ride from the Lee s. Bill and Judy did a great job of mapping out several mileage rides and everyone brought so much great food that you could not help but have a great time. Thanks Bill and Judy for being such great hosts. After that great event, we had the Summer Solstice out of Madeline Bertrand Park which was hosted by Jerry and Sue Dietzel and Jamie Moore. That pulled pork made by Jerry was the highlight of the food, but was in no way all we had. After everyone took their bicycles for a spin on another steamy night, everyone enjoyed another great feast. Our members do know how to do a carry-in. Thanks Jerry, Sue and Jaime for hosting. In July we had another outing from a new location, Arthur Dodd Park hosted by Richard and Dixie Couch. After having a slight issue with our shelter, we set up at an alternate shelter in the park and Richard set up the grills and served us hamburgers, hot dogs and brats. Dixie threw in salads and fruit to make sure everyone could find enough to eat. Was there any doubt on that when the MBA gets together?! The ride was great. The food was great and a good time was had by all. Thanks Richard and Dixie for hosting. Continued on page 4 James & June Brandner Michiana Bicycle Association Katie Michalczyk PIZZA RIDE Since we are nearing the end of the cycling season (for fair weather cyclists anyway), The Social Committee has decided to squeeze in one last social event for the year. Come and ride with us on Wednesday, September 26th at Northpoint School in Granger. After the ride, MBA members are invited to saunter over to Mancino s on St. Rte. 23 in Granger for pizza and soft drinks, on the MBA! So we know how many to expect, give me a call at , or at raynellen@att.net if you are planning to attend. If it rains, the party is still on, we will just eat sooner. Ellen Halicki Social Committee Chairman 1

4 From the President (continued from page 1): Amishland: Much could be said about the great event our members provided again this year. There were over 900 riders that enjoyed the Amish countryside. There is no way that this three day event could have been a success for almost 40 years without the truly dedicated members we have that work hard to make sure it is a great event. The Amishland Committee works hard all year to get the details organized working toward August, but without every member of the MBA contributing a few hours of volunteer time all weekend, the event would not be possible. Thanks to every member that worked so hard. And just so you don t think we stopped there, last Wednesday for ride night, we held our annual Poker Ride. The Halicki s, Couch s and Phyllis Kaminski put together the card stops so our riders could try for the winning or losing hand for prizes. Leftover fruit, cookies and trail mix was enjoyed by all at the end. Thanks to all the MBA members for all your time and contributions to make this another great summer of riding and eating. The MBA is good at both! HELP WANTED Needed: someone to take over the job of producing the monthly newsletter, the MBA News, starting in 2013, and other duties associated with the position of Vice President of Publishing. The job requires basic computer skills and the ability to navigate on the internet. I use the Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel and Publisher, and am willing to assist the next newsletter editor in any way I can. I am sure there are other programs that could be used, but these work for me. At the end of this year, it will be five years that I have been doing this, and I feel it is time to give someone else a crack at it. Vice President of Publishing is an elected position, and I am asking anyone who would like do this job to consider putting his/her name on the ballot. Please feel free to contact me by , phone, or in person (I am almost always at the Wednesday night rides) to answer any questions you might have. Ray Halicki raynellen@att.net Gail Weaver President Editor s Note Gail does not want to blow her own horn, but someone needs to. There are a lot of members who contribute to making Amishland a success. But special recognition should be given to all the work done before, during, and after Amishland to Gail and Mike Weaver, Bonnie and Marlon Yoder, and Dick Kuehl. Ray HOSPICE RIDE The 4th Annual Bike Michiana for Hospice ride will be held September 16, The rides venture through the scenic beauty of South Bend home to the University of Notre Dame and the surrounding Michiana area. The various routes will take you by forests, gently rolling hills, lakes, vineyards and wineries. Even if you re not riding, join the post-event party at St. Patrick s Park. Details on the post-event party will be added closer to the day of the event. For more information or to register online, visit or contact Lisa Kelly at

5 POKER RIDE The weather was decidedly iffy for the Poker Ride Wednesday evening August 8th, to the point where some riders cut it short. But at least 20 riders completed their routes and gathered their poker hands, and still managed to stay dry. All enjoyed the drinks, cookies and fruit supplied by the MBA. POKER WINNERS Chris VandenBossche, Vickie Walters, Chris Seanor, and Rob Goulet MBA CLUB JERSEYS Dick Couch will be taking orders for the MBA Club Jersey. You can contact Dick at or by at 5
