I swear that I know these [individuals], all of whom, by common consent and in a single voice--[as well as] each for himself--jointly said that it has now been a period of fourteen years, more or less, since they have been able to undertake the branding of their bovine and equine cattle with the formality to which they were accustomed in the past; that [this was] because they had been hindered in part by the continuous and incessant war which this province has carried on Il lv with the numerous and warlike nation of the Cumanche Indians, who, within the past year, have ceased their hostilities, thanks to the peace agreement made with them; and that [thereforej they ask and beg me to allow them to [brandj all the unbranded, stray, and ownerless cattle--of both kinds--which may be found on their respective pastures, according to the pact and agreement which is expressed in the following articles. 1...That the mission of [E]sp[lriJtu S[anJto be permitted to round \ up its aforesaid cattle on the lands encompassed from the afo~e-cited mission up the San Antonio River to where "it joins the Arroyo de[l] Cleto; from here in a straight line to the head of the Arroyo del Cuchillo of the Badefios; from here in a str~ight line to where the Arroyo de los Nogales empties into the Guadalupe River; from here downriver to its outlet to the sea; and from here up the San Antonio River to the aforesaid mission. 2 That for the same purpose the mission of San Ant[oniJo Valero be allotted the [lands] encompassed from its rancho, called La. In consequence whereof, and in consideration of the public benefit to the residents of this afore-mentioned province, as well as the neophytes of its aforesaid missions, I have seen fit.to grant and permit them the afore-cited request, such that, within the limits here expressed.', they might effect the roundup of their bovine and equine cattle-- branded as well as unbranded, stray, and ownerless. [They may do so] on the condition that each one of the raisers of said cattle, and the I.missions, present to me afterward a list or sworn report of the number and type of the latter [ownerless] category which they have branded and marked, so that Whatever repercussions might develop in this matter, the [raisers] will be within their rights, against any charges which might be brought against them. //3 In confirmation of this consent and authorization, they signed with me in the presence of the attesting witnesses with whom I act in the absence of a notary, doing so on this plain paper, as' there is none stamped.
