1 Course description Universitas Castellae SPANISH LITERATURE I (MIDDLE AGES GOLDEN AGE) Through a series of readings and other works, the course will seek to present the evolution of Spanish literature, from its beginnings up to the end of the 17th Century, while displaying the characteristics, styles, and diverse forms of each period, as well as interactions between history, society, and those texts. The student will work with materials provided by the professor, complimenting theoretical explanations, which will serve to give a better comprehension of the periods studied. Given the extensive nature of the course, it will not be presented as simply a monographic study of different authors, but rather a general panorama of Spanish literary history. Thus the recommended texts will form a basis off which the professor will provide commentary and insight (in addition to the required readings). Through the duration of the course, the student will have various required readings, each of which should be carefully studied with emphasis on the themes and structure present. The student will then be responsible for a formal writing assignment, which should adequately display comprehension of the text at hand. Course policies There will be three written quizzes during the course, in which the student should demonstrate their capacity to analyze the topic previously presented in class. These will constitute 60% of the final grade There will be one written essay (20% of the final grade) on a one or two works selected by the student, but within the scope of the course. The requirements are as follows: -Length: 5 pages -Format: Times New Roman 12 (Double spaced) -Bibliography and citations in MLA format The student will present two versions of the essay. Due dates will be: FIRST DRAFT March 18th FINAL COPY May 10th VERY IMPORTANT! NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE DUE DATE SPECIFIED IN THE SYLLABUS

2 During the course, there will be various presentations in class, on a literary work. They will be individual, and last approximately ten minutes. The student, after consulting with the professor, will select a topic to present, followed by questions and discusión. These will constitute 10% of the final grade. The rest of the final grade will depend on attendance and the completion of daily assignments. The final grade breakdown is as follows: Written exams 60% Essay 2 20% Presentations 10% Attendance and homework 10% Class attendance is mandatory. Each unexcused absence will subtract 2% from the final grade. It is important that the student attends each class and maintains a positive attitude in an attempt to get the most out of the course. Due to the course being structured in such a practical manner, active participation in class discussions is also fundamental.
