3 Climate The weather changes periodically in fall, getting cooler and cooler. You will surely have rain on one of the days during the conference. An umbrella is necessary. Please pray your God for a fine weather on the day of excursion and dinner. Typical highest temperature during the day is while the lowest Bring a warm jacket especially for the excursion to Korakuen garden. Water Tap water is drinkable. Facilities in the hotel Internet connections are available. Pajamas, towels, tooth brushes, combs, hair dryers, soaps, shampoos etc will be provided by the hotel. Facilities in the University dormitory No internet connections are available. You have to bring towels, tooth brushes, combs, and pajamas. Soaps and shampoos, and blankets, sheets will be provided. The total cost will be about 1500 yen per night. If you need the exact number, please ask. Transportation LOC will NOT provide buses between Okayama station (where most of the hotels are located) and OUS. Please get on the bus at the bus stop 22 at the West gate of Okayama Station (see the 3 rd circular). All buses departing from stop 22 will go to OUS. The fare is 200 yen for one way. Bills larger than 1000 yen will not be accepted. Please ask change in advance, maybe at your hotel. Please be aware of the bus schedule especially for your return as it is not so frequent. For coming in the morning, there will be several extra buses which are not in the time table. Our students will help on Monday morning around the bus stop. Upon arrival Narita (Tokyo international) airport If you arrive at Narita airport, you have to go to Haneda (mainly domestic) airport to catch domestic flight, or to Tokyo train terminal to catch Shinkansen (like TGV, ICE). To go to Haneda airport, the simplest and fastest is to take a limousine bus (3000 yen,

4 85 min.). You can use a train, which is cheapest, but taking long (120 min). There are only several direct trains to Haneda airport, usually you have to make a change on the way (it is not so difficult as long as you are aware of announcements). You also can take faster route, but is complicated. Take Keisei Skyliner to Nippori, change to JR circular line to Hamamacho, then monorail to Haneda. To go to Tokyo terminal station, the simplest is take JR Narita express, which is quite expensive but not so fast. You have to make sure that the train goes to or through Tokyo station. Keisei Skyliner is fast and less expensive but arrives at Nippori station and you have to change to JR circular train to Tokyo station. Haneda airport There are some international flights arriving at international terminal of Haneda airport. Just change the terminal and you catch domestic flights. The check-in for domestic flights must be made by 15 minutes before the scheduled departure. Kansai (Osaka international) airport You will have two choices to go to Okayama. One is limousine bus to Okayama Station, which is simplest and cheapest (4500 yen) but takes long (about 3.5 hours) and is infrequent (7 buses per day). It leaves from the bus stop 11 in front of the terminal. More popular is to use JR, Haruka express and change to Shinkansen (2 hours). Go to green counter of Kansai airport station. You will need 3 tickets, one is for base fare, one for Haruka express and the last for Shinkansen. Usually the trains are not so much crowded and you do not need to buy ones for reserved seat, but you will have chance that you cannot sit in the train. They accept credit cards. At the JR entrance (not Nankai), you just put the base fare ticket. Go down the escalator to the train. If you have a reserved ticket, you have to check train number, car number and the seat number. I am sorry no English translation on the ticket (but you recognize the numbers). After the departure of the train, there will be ticket control to check your Haruka express ticket. After arriving at Shin-Osaka station (this is not the last stop of the train), you go up to a concourse. You advance to Shinkansen and you have to go through another automatic gate, where you put both base fare and Shinkansen express tickets together (Do NOT put Haruka express ticket). Go to the direction, Okayama, Hakata, or Kagoshima, and go up to an appropriate platform after checking your train. Okayama will be the second or third stop. Go down and put the both tickets to the automatic gate to go out.

5 Something to be noted for Japanese trains First, you should be aware of the company which operates the train when you are in Tokyo or in Osaka. Usually you have to go out the gate to buy another ticket when you change into a train operated by another railway company. For longer travel, you usually need to use express trains, for which you need additional ticket. It means you will need two tickets base fare and express tickets. The same is for Shinkansen. There is no control for the express ticket at the automatic gate (such as for Haruka or for Narita expresses, but in the train) but there is for Shinkansen. This is why you have to go through two gates to enter the Shinkansen platform. Please be sure to have appropriate tickets (base fare and express tickets) before entering the gate. Okayama Airport Okayama Airport is a tiny airport with only three boarding gates. Everything is very simple. The bus to Okayama Station departs just in front of the terminal. No problems. We ask those who stay at hotels near Okayama Station to take a bus to the West gate of Okayama station. The buses depart just after the arrival of the flights. If the flights are delayed, buses will depart for the time. It will take 30 min and cost 740 yen. For those who stay in the Dormitory, we will provide transportation as below. At Okayama Station On Nov. 18 (Sun), a student will be in front of the Shinkansen gate and another at the bus stop to OUS (bus stop 22) from 10 am to 4 pm for help. We recommend you leave your luggage at your hotel, which is located close to the station, and come back to the station to get a bus to OUS to join the special key note lecture and the icebreaker. Those who stay at the dormitory should take your luggage to OUS. Transportation to and from the dormitory The following buses will be operated for free of charge. Information on your hotel Okayama Visitors and Convention Association, which help us in having the banquet in Okayama Castle, will give financial support to the conference for the participants to stay in Okayama city. The amount of the support is function of the total number of the stays of the participants. For this purpose, we need to know from when to when and at which hotel each of the participants stays.
