3 Explore Japan with Japan Rail Pass The Japan Railways Group (JR Group) offers a variety of Rail Passes which allow for convenient traveling in Japan. You will need to first purchase an Exchange Order from GTA and when your guest arrives in Japan, they can exchange for their Rail Passes. Two Types of Japan Rail Pass : Green : Superior Class Ordinary : Coach Class

4 Validity Period : The Japan Rail Pass has to be used consecutively beginning on the date the Pass is first used. Within three months from the date where the Exchange Order was issued, you must exchange your Exchange order for the Japan Rail Pass. At that time, you have to specify the date when you would like to start using the Pass. It can be any date within one month from the date the Pass is received. Once the Pass has a starting date written on it, the date cannot be changed. Railways : All JR Group Railways-Shinkansen "bullet trains" (except any reserved or non-reserved seat on "NOZOMI" trains), limited express trains, express trains, and rapid or local trains. (With some exceptions) Japan Rail Pass can be used for Tokyo monorail connecting Haneda Airport and Hamamatsucho Station (beginning October 21, 2010) Buses : Local lines of JR bus companies (JR Hokkaido Bus, JR Bus Tohoku, JR Bus Kanto, JR Tokai Bus, West Japan JR Bus, Chugoku JR Bus, JR Shikoku Bus, JR Kyushu Bus) and some of JR highway bus services**. **Sapporo-Otaru; Morioka-Hirosaki; Tokyo-Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka,Tsukuba Center; Nagoya-Kyoto, Osaka; Osaka-Tsuyama, Kasai Flower Center Ferry : Only the JR Miyajima ferry is covered. The JR Hakata-Pusan (Korea) ferry is not covered. Important notes : The JAPAN RAIL PASS is not valid for any seats, reserved or non-reserved, on NOZOMI and MIZUHO trains on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen lines. (The pass holders must take HIKARI, SAKURA, KODAMA, or TSUBAME trains.) If you use a NOZOMI or MIZUHO train, you must pay the basic fare and the limited express charge, and for a Green Car the Green Car surcharge. In addition, if you use the GranClass car of the Tohoku Shinkansen, you must pay the limited express charge and the GranClass car surcharge. Note also that passengers using JR trains on non-jr lines must pay additional fares and charges for sections traveled on such lines.

5 Who is eligible? a) All passes available for foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad for sightseeing under the entry status of "Temporary Visitor". According to the Japanese Immigration Law, Temporary Visitor entry is allowed to stay in Japan of 15 days or 90 days for sightseeing etc.. If you apply for a stay for sightseeing when you enter Japan, entry personnel will stamp your passport as temporary Visitor, only passenger with this stamp can use a Japan Rail Pass. b) Japanese national living in a foreign country can buy Japan Rail Pass, 1. who is qualified to live permanently in that country, or 2. who is married to a non-japanese residing in a country other than Japan. How to obtain a Japan Rail Pass? A Japan Rail Pass cannot be purchase in Japan; you must purchase an Exchange Order from GTA before entering in Japan. Note : Traveller meeting conditions (a) or (b) must require to show proof at the point of purchase of an Exchange Order and obtaining a Japan Rail Pass. Traveller meeting condition (b) must provide written proof of the following: That they are married to a non-japanese That their sponse is living outside Japan Even if an applicant presents electronic data or other documentation, establishing their compliance with conditions (a) and (b) above, the pass may be denied if the clerk is unable to verify that compliance. Similarly, applicants with dual citizenship in Japan and another country will not be able to turn in their exchange order for a Pass if they entered Japan with their Japanese passport.

8 Condition : Travellers must purchase the Exchange Order before to come to Japan The pass is issued to and accepted by the person named on the ticket The traveller must exchange his Exchange Order for a Japan Rail Pass within three months from the date of issue. Travellers holding an Ordinary pass may board only the Ordinary cars, Green passes may board Ordinary and Green cars. A passport must be produced at the first time of purchase to verify the passenger is a resident of another country. The holder will be required to pay applicable fares incurred as a result of riding beyond the designated area for this pass. No refund can be made even if there are no available reserved seats and the holder must use nonreserved seating. No refund is payable on passes that have been validated, nor are refunds allowed on lost or stolen passes. Applications for refund on unused passes must be submitted to the issuing office within 12 months of the date of issue and a 10% refund fee is payable. An Exchange Order that has not been submitted for a Japan Rail Pass can be returned to the office where it was purchased for a refund, within one year of the date of issue. In such cases, a handling fee and communication fee will be subtracted from the refund. No refund on a JAPAN RAIL PASS can be made in the event of train service delays or suspension, etc.
