4 Guizhou Province Guizhou lies in the southwestern part of China, surrounded by the provinces of Yunnan, Sichuan, Hunan, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and Chongqing Municipality. It is administered by nine prefecture-level divisions, headed by the capital Guiyang. Guizhou is largely mountainous and relatively poor when compared to the coastal provinces. Its small economy is based on forestry and the energy sector. Han Chinese make up more than 60 percent of the total population, now exceeding 40 million. The main airports in the province are managed and operated by the Guizhou Airports Group Co Ltd, a subsidiary of the Capital Airports Holding Co. These include the capital gateway of Guiyang Longdongbao International (KWE/ZUGY), Tongren Phoenix (TEN/ZUTR), and Xingyi (ACX/ZUYI). Guiyang Longdongbao International (KWE/ZUGY) Longdongbao serves the capital city of Guizhou Province in south-central China. It presently has connections to 40 Chinese cities, as well as to Hong Kong, Macau and Bangkok. Substantial growth in 2009, which was maintained in 2010 with 6.3 million passengers, has brought the airport beyond its theoretical capacity with its single 3,200 x 60m runway and 34,000m 2 terminal. As a result, construction is in progress on Phase II of the planned expansion, which will more than double the annual handling capacity to 15.5 million passengers, 220,000 tonnes of cargo and 150,000 aircraft movements. The centrepiece of the project is a new 110,000m 2 airport terminal. Other work includes a new 21,000m 2 cargo terminal, 25 additional passenger boarding gates, an increase in the car parking area by 70,000m 2 and a new ground surveillance system. Total investment is expected to be around CNY 3.45 billion (USD 544 million). 5 Kaili Huangping Construction started in December 2010 of a new airport, designed to a standard configuration for small airports in the province, which includes a 3,500m² terminal building and 2,600 x 45m runway. Construction by the Southwest Civil Aviation of China Construction Group Corporation started in December 2011 and is expected to be completed within two years. Key element is a 600m extension of the runway to 2,600m, together with resurfacing of the existing portion. Also part of this CNY 427 million (USD 67.3 million) project are the construction of two more aircraft stands, new airfield lighting, electricity, fuel, water supply and drainage, and a firefighting station. Zunyi Xinzhou A CNY 408 million (USD 64.3 million) project to convert the military air base into a dualuse civil and military facility was due for completion early in The airport will have a 11,000m² terminal building and 3,000m long runway, and is projected to have an annual throughput of 300,000 passengers by 2020.
