4 1. Executive Summary China is already the world s second largest economy after US and it is expected that it will overtake the US economy in As China s GDP increases and disposable income levels rise, the population becomes wealthy enough to travel both within and outside the country s borders. Due to the population of China and surrounding countries, there is a huge market opportunity for aviation businesses operating to/from and within China, which is currently only in its infancy phase. The population size of China is stimulating the massive growth seen at the Chinese airports. A comparison of general population in the top 20 cities in the US vs China illustrates the huge potential for air travel in the country over the coming decade, with all of the top 20 cities in China having over 3m inhabitants. Compared to the US of which has only 2 cities (New York and Los Angeles) with a population of over 3m. Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson Airport (ATL) is the busiest airport in the world by capacity since with Beijing Capital (PEK) in second place for the past two years, but with Beijing s rapid growth, it is forecast to overtake Atlanta in 2012 after 15 years at number 1. The recently built terminal at Beijing Capital International Airport cannot keep up with China s booming air-travel demand. The city already has Beijing Capital International Airport and Nanyuan Airport, but they are not big enough to handle growing demand and a third airport is being built. Due to be completed in 2015, Daxing Airport, located 50km out of the city in the village of Nangezhuan, is expected to handle 120 to 200 million passengers a year. 3 The Chinese air travel market has the potential to grow 10 times from where it is today, assuming China will reach a similar level of propensity to travel as Europe and the US and to become 4.3 the size of the US air travel market. 4 This potential presents huge opportunities for the aviation industry and that in years to come the top 20 airports of the world will be dominated by Chinese airports OAG Schedules inet 3 Heathrow-worlds-busiest.html 4 OAG Schedules inet 2012 UBM Aviation Worldwide Limited. 5 2. World Top 20 Airports by capacity In November 2011 OAG announced that Atlanta, the world s largest airport, will soon be overtaken by Beijing Capital airport. Based on the average annual capacity growth rate (table below) the fastest airport growth is in Asia Pacific and the Middle East. Three of the five airports that are growing at a rate of over 8% per year belong to China. Top 20 airports by capacity 2011 Source: OAG Schedules inet In 1999, Hartsfield Jackson's leadership established the Development Program called "Focus On the Future" which involve multiple construction projects with the intention of preparing the airport to handle a projected demand of 121 million passengers in The program was originally budgeted at $5.4 billion over a ten-year period, but due to project delays and increased construction costs, the total is now projected at over $9 billion. 5 Beijing Capital has rapidly ascended in rankings of the world's busiest airports in the past decade. It had become the busiest airport in Asia in terms of passenger traffic. Daxing Airport will be Beijing's third and could have as many as nine runways, under plans that are already under creation. The airport is expected to handle between 120 and 200 million passengers every year, at least twice the number dealt with at Heathrow Heathrow-worlds-busiest.html#ixzz1ia9CgPNW 2012 UBM Aviation Worldwide Limited. 6 With more than 1.3 billion people, China is the world's most populous country representing 20% of the world's population. China's population growth is stimulating the massive growth seen at the Chinese airports. This economic growth is fuelling development and aircraft demand through an increased demand in air travel in the country UBM Aviation Worldwide Limited. All rights reserved. A UBM plc company. 8

China's aircraft fleet is projected to increase by 2020 to over 2,260 aircraft. 7 China s inability to domestically mass-produce modern high-performance jet engines at a consistently high-quality will be a challenge for their relatively young aviation industry. Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) is treating engine development as a high priority as it plans to invest 10 billion RMB (US$1.53 billion) into jet engine research and development over the next 5 years in order to shorten this learning curve. 8 7 OAG CAMRO with OAG forecast growth based on existing growth rates UBM Aviation Worldwide Limited. 14 6. Summary and conclusions With Beijing having its sights firmly set on becoming the world s busiest airport, it is worth examining how the airport has developed. Beijing Airport has surged into second place behind Atlanta from 10 th to 2 nd in under 6 years aided more recently by the opening of Terminal 3 at Beijing Capital Airport in 2008, a sweeping structure designed that is far bigger than all of Heathrow's five terminals combined. Beijing has started construction on a new mega-airport that will have nine runways and when Beijing Daxing International airport opens in 2015, the Chinese capital will become the world's busiest aviation hub. Beijing is expected to play a major role in transport for the Asia Pacific region and the main bridge with the rest of the world. China with 20% of the world's population and Beijing with the average capacity annual growth rate at the level of 8.96% will continue to grow to a potential 10 times the size of their existing air travel market, assuming a future propensity to travel as the US today.
