2 TEAM IOWA ~ Tom & Sue Wright District Directors Hi everyone to begin this month s newsletter I would like to begin by talking to the Chapter Directors about the monthly Snap Shot. I will be sending it out every month as an attachment on an it will be sent on the 15 th of each month and I would like it to be returned to us by the 20 th. All you have to do is click on it open it up, it will open in word or pdf, and will be a fillable form. After you have filled it in please it back to us so I can compile all the information and send it on to Region and then it will be sent onto our Deputy Director Bruce Beeman. Why is this important you ask? The benefit in each case is that we will be getting a quick look at how we are doing as a Chapter, District, or Region and how as a whole we may be able to focus our resources to help one another as needed. It also is a way to brag about what your Chapter has accomplished each month. Directors you may want to ask someone in your Chapter that is looking for some way to help out with the Chapter. One other thing I would like to talk about is to ask anyone that is planning on attending the Iowa District Rally to please go to the Iowa District website and register and also let us know if you will be attending the luncheon on Monday before closing ceremonies. We have several great raffle items lined up for the rally it s sure to be a great rally as always. Try and get out to visit with the other Chapters in the District time permitting the more friends you gain in GWRRA the more enriched your life will become, also you may want to broaden your horizons and visit some of the other Region Rally s in Region E. Remember the Region E Rally will be held in Cedar Rapids this year, it makes it quite close for all of in the Iowa District lets show them what we are made of, and help support our District Couple of the Year Pete and Cheryl Sayers, soon to be the Region E Couple of the Year. 3 TEAM IOWA ~ John & Yvette Moravec Assistant District Directors Hi everyone, We are hoping you have had the chance to get out in the beautiful spring weather and ride. We have been. What a great safety weekend the district hosted! We were able to attend on Saturday for the Experience rider with some new friends from Wisconsin and locals from Iowa. The training was great though mother nature did not want to cooperate with winds and cold on both Friday and Saturday and rain for those that participated on Friday. But training is good in those conditions so we have had practice for when it happens while we are traveling to new places enjoying new adventures with friends while we ride around the country. We have been finalizing plans for travel to New York for Americade. We will let you know about that rally opportunity which you may have seen ads for in Wing World. We are looking forward to traveling in the Adirondack mountains and to some covered bridges in Vermont. I have heard the roads there are great. John was there 8 years ago but the weather wasn't favorable for him so he didn't get to see much, thus our return. Don't forget the upcoming Region Rally held in our great state, almost in our back yard. John and I are already working on rides to take you to the J and P open house that weekend and to the Amana colonies. Please be sure to offer your assistance to the Region Team while you are there. If familiar with Linn county, consider to lead a ride. Before you know it the summer will be over and we will be ready for the District rally. Be surer to get your registration completed on the Iowa district website soon plus don't forget make your hotel or camping reservations. Dubuque is a great area along the Mississippi to ride and one of my personal favorite places to be in the summer. At the tower south of Dubuque in the Mines of Spain state park there is an overlook where you have an amazing view of 3 states. Not to far north of there, and just south of McGregor Iowa is pikes peak lookout with another amazing view of the Mississippi river. The best part of both overlooks are the curvy roads to get between them. We'll see you there! Yvette & John Moravec Assistant District Directors

4 TEAM IOWA ~ Doug & Mary Ann Boemecke Senior District Educators And what, pray tell, happened to the weather over Safety Weekend? When I gave the forecast back in January, I forgot about this being Leap Year and missed the good weather by a couple of days. So I apologize for the cold and wind that you all had to put up with. All you brave souls deserve a pat on the back for going out on the range and fighting through it. Other than unbearable weather, the weekend of training was a huge success. There were 58 participants who gained a great amount of knowledge about the proper riding techniques on motorcycles and trikes. Those who took the CPR/First Aid class achieved excellent instruction on how to perform emergency treatment of the ill or the injured We should be very thankful that we have excellent volunteers in our organization that give of their time and share their expertise with us. We thank them and we will always be indebted to them. How well do you handle Distractions while riding your bike or driving your car? Do you lose your temper and forget to control your emotions as a bad driver makes a dangerous move in front of you, or as they are using their cell phone they inadvertently cause you to brake quickly or cause you to change lanes to avoid an accident? Or do you do something to distract you from the job at hand? We can all be guilty of being distracted and put ourselves or others at risk. Distracted drivers are comparable to drunk drivers and are just as dangerous as a person who is behind the wheel and intoxicated. For instance, the average delayed reaction because of cell phone use is the equivalent of a blood alcohol level that has reached the legal limit of.08%. As a driver or a rider, we cannot ever let any non-driving activity interfere with the primary task of driving and increase the risk of a crash. Motorcyclists are not immune to distraction on the road. A rider s lack of preparation prior to a ride and inattention during the ride can result in increased risks and serious consequences for the rider and others. Make sure your motorcycle is in proper working order. Get in gear with all the gear and wear it all the time. Be rested and ready to ride. Limit use of on board technology while on the move. Do not let co-rider or other conversation distract you. Stay alert and concentrate on the safe operation of your motorcycle. Be safe and come back to us, DougB District Educator

It sure has for us and there is still a few days left! Roger and myself have been working very hard on some new things to enhance our knowledge base even more to benefit you as members. We hope to have more details and good news to share soon. All Chapter calendars are starting to fill up nicely and it will be so much fun to see many of you at some of these events. We were fortunate to actually meet a new member that we had spoken to recently off the monthly MEC reports. It is so exciting to put faces to the people we come in contact with. Roger wants to make sure you all know that the new member's name is also Roger. A Roger epidemic for sure! We wish everyone a safe Memorial Day Holiday and hope to have some exciting news next month! 6 The Ralph Swank Award is Iowa s most prestigious award to be given to an individual or couple. A little history about the award: Ralph Swank was responsible for bringing GWRRA to Iowa in He was a strong backer for GWRRA he participated in almost every rally and function that involved GWRRA. Do to his health he retired his bike and membership around June After this time, he did participate in several Gold Wing Events as an announcer, Ralph was the announcer at the 1988 Region E Rally in Waverly, Iowa we believe this was the last Rally attended by Ralph. In 1988, Bob Main, State Director of GWRRA at the time, announced the start of the Ralph Swank Award at the Iowa State Firecracker Rally in Grinnell, Iowa. This award was given to someone in the state who showed a strong desire to support and further the growth of GWRRA in IOWA and to be of help to anyone in need of information on the program. The award says In recognition of outstanding service to GWRRA and motorcycling in general the award was founded in There have been 28 such awards presented to this time including Ralph Swank.
