1 Invest in Lyon Newsletter The newsletter for those who have chosen or will choose Lyon! March 2010 Confluence. From the Latin confluere, to flow together, to join forces. This urban redevelopment project, spanning 150 hectares, was launched 10 years ago by Greater Lyon. It is now taking on a new dimension, with the construction of the marina and other projects: the impressive Regional government building designed by Portzamparc, the headquarters of Eiffage, near the Rambaud docks, and the headquarters of the newspaper Le Progrès. Plans are also underway for euronews television channel to move to a new building on the banks of the Saône river, followed by GL Events. Everyone is converging to this extraordinary site, where the top architects Herzog and Demeuron have brought new energy to phase 2 of the development project. Another bright spot is the County s choice of a top engineering firm to build the spectacular and highly complex design for the Confluences Museum by the Austrian architects Coop Himmelb(l)au. Other projects are moving ahead quickly and will make this site truly unique, with a combination of residential and office space, retail and leisure facilities, and perhaps even an academic establishment if the Catholic University confirms the proposed move from its historic Bellecour building to what was, until just recently, Saint Paul Prison. Thanks to the Confluence development project, Lyon is also continuing its effort to take back the riversides for the benefit of local residents, as was so beautifully done upstream on the banks of the Rhone river, now a park and promenade. The advertizing agency DDB Nouveau Monde took inspiration from these transformations by choosing a romantic spot on the Saône - suddenly taking on airs of the Danube or Moldau - for the international communication campaign of ONLYLYON. Confluence: the place where Lyon s European ambitions converge, following the example set by the Cité Internationale site, the symbol of a confident and rising metropolis with its eyes set firmly on a bright international future! 2 02 Lyon Initiatives Special Report Corporate real estate: Lyon Confluence, A T he 2010 version of the MIPIM show (International Market of Property Professionals), which will be held in Cannes from March 16 to 19, provides us with an opportunity to review some major development projects that are transforming Lyon s urban landscape. In addition to highlighting the rivers, with in particular the redevelopment of the Rhone embankment, other projects also symbolize the Lyon of the future, such as the renovation of the Confluence district. When completed, At the southern tip of the Lyon Peninsula, where the Rhone and Saone Rivers meet, the Confluence district, historically dedicated to industry and transport, is now undergoing unprecedented renewal, and represents one of the largest city-center development projects in France. It will allow Lyon to double the surface area of its city center. Extending across 150 hectares, the Confluence gives ample room to public spaces, which represent half of the surface area of the first phase. With its marina bordered by terraces, its promenade park stretching along 2 kilometers on the banks of the Saone River, together with its lodgings, shops, cultural and recreational facilities, major companies and institutions, the Confluence district is destined to become a prestigious new location in Lyon. Serviced by the A7 motorway and the Perrache high-speed train station, connected to the subway system and crisscrossed by a tramway line (which is slated to be extended by 2014 to the other side of the Rhone towards the Gerland science district, past the future Confluence Museum), the Confluence district will benefit from a new railway stop in the south. In addition to being very well served by public transit, this site boasts an incomparable natural setting: nearly 5 kilometers of quays, riverside promenades and a breathtaking view of the verdant right bank of the Saone River. To the north of the marina, across from the future Unibail-Rodamco recreational and shopping center, mixed-use buildings (650 housing units, 15,000 sq. meters of office space, 3,000 sq. meters of shops and activity space on the building s ground floor) are in the process of being delivered. Winners of the European Concerto program for their high environmental quality, these buildings are being designed by 12 teams of renowned architects for the developers Nexity Apollonia, Bouwfonds- Marignan Immobilier and Ing Real Estate-Atemi. The first phase of the project, launched in 2003, is on the Saone side and represents nearly 40% of the total planned volume of construction, i.e. the renewal of 400,000 square meters over a 12-year period ( ). A significant share of the development has now been completed. Giving pride of place to public spaces, the Confluence district encourages mixed land use and social diversity. The mixed use is achieved through the construction of 130,000 sq. m. dedicated to housing (3,500 inhabitants), 120,000 sq. m. for shops, services, recreational facilities and hotels, and 130,000 sq. m of office space. Advertising agencies and Le Progrès Group have already set up in the former Rambaud Port. They were joined in 2009 by the teams of Eiffage Group and ERAI (Entreprise Rhône- Alpes International), to be followed in 2010 by other companies and institutions (Rhône-Alpes Region, Espace Groupe, Cardinal and GDF- Suez). In all, nearly 5,000 more employees will work
3 Lyon Initiatives 03 Major Urban Project this project will profoundly change the face of the city, while proudly upholding the values of a sustainable and audacious metropolis. in the Confluence district by the end of A few restaurants which have opened in the Confluence are already bustling with patrons, paving the way for a trendy new scene in Lyon. One such restaurant is Rue Le Bec, an all-new concept of 2,000 sq. m., designed by the two-starred chef Nicolas Le Bec and featuring a market-style restaurant surrounded by different stalls: a fishmonger, butcher and greengrocer, a wine shop, grocery store, coffee bar, cheese cellar, and more. There is also a delicatessen where you can grab a quick bite to eat, two clubs for cigar lovers and the Place Rouge Bar. In the coming months, about 20 restaurants are expected to open their doors across the entire site, many of them catering to the clientele of the recreational facilities. In December 2009, it was the Swiss architect/urban planning team Herzog & de Meuron, associated with the landscape architect Michel Desvigne, that was chosen to develop the second phase of the urban planning project. The team will essentially be in charge of implementing the development plan of the 24 hectares of the southeastern section of the Confluence district (including 17 hectares of the former wholesale market transferred in January 2009 to the outskirts of Lyon) and supervising construction of the Main Square extending from the marina. In the long term, the program, with its offices, housing, shops and local government branches, should lead Key figures of the project Surface area: 150 hectares 600,000 square meters of office space, including 400,000 sq. m. under construction Net floor area: 1 million sq. m. Current population: 7,000 inhabitants Future population: 18,000 inhabitants Current jobs: 7,000 Future jobs: 27,000 to the development of another 1 million sq. m. in the Confluence district. This area is a true gateway to southern Lyon, and 45% of the 350,000 sq. m. of surface area will be dedicated to the services sector. Major projects on the move! Part-Dieu: Oxygène Tower wins a prize The Oxygène Tower, set to be inaugurated in 2010, has won at the beginning of February the prize for most beautiful building in the Pierres d Or Competition, sponsored by property professionals. The Lyon-based architects Arte et Charpentier designed this 115-meter-high skyscraper with 28 floors. Gérard Collomb, the Mayor of Lyon, who initiated the project, considers that this prize celebrates a shared ambition and will contribute to enhancing the prestige of the Part-Dieu district.
4 04 Lyon Initiatives ONLYLYON celebrates its third anniversary At the beginning of 2010, Lyon s international brand, ONLYLYON, celebrated its third anniversary. Launched in January 2007, over time the program has built up a strategy based on complementary initiatives: conducting press relations, using on and off-line communication, leading a network of Ambassadors and holding prestigious events. ONLYLYON is a brand recognized for its governance (it comprises the major economic stakeholders in the Lyon area), as well as for its concept, serving as an example for many cities in France. Sometimes, it is even compared to brands such as I amsterdam or Think London was a productive year for ONLYLYON: the brand was featured in large displays in European airports, train stations and inflight magazines; it developed its online presence by investing in particular in social networks; it increased its visibility in national and international media and attracted over 3,700 Ambassadors. At present, the brand is starting out 2010 in the spirit of continuity. Indeed, the brand will carry on with the initiatives started in 2009, in order to enhance its brand awareness, and it will also continue boosting Lyon s reputation, internationally. And in June, all the Ambassadors will be invited to a major event, like the one held last June at City Hall. Convention Marketing Director, he reminded them that it is thanks to initiatives such as the "Lyon Welcome Attitude" that Lyon is succeeding in becoming a major tourist destination in Europe Since the beginning of 2010, ONLYLYON Ambassadors have been able to discover a new concept of events. In order to bring them together as regularly as possible, nine theme events will be organized throughout the year. The Ambassadors will be invited according to their interests, so they will be able to meet in smaller groups and make the most of their time The first mini-event of the year was held at the City Convention Center. During the Business Event Seminars, the Tourism Ambassadors met for breakfast. Jacques de Chilly, the Executive Director of Aderly, announced ONLYLYON s communication strategy for 2010 and encouraged each Ambassador to report back on the good hospitality practices in tourism they may observe whenever they travel. As for Olivier Occelli, the ONLYLYON Tourism and BECOME AN ONLYLYON AMBASSADOR! The major economic stakeholders of the Lyon metropolitan area have developed the ONLYLYON brand in order to improve the visibility of Lyon and its international reputation. Now a network of over 3,700 Ambassadors, comprising economic players in the metropolis, proudly flies the colors of Lyon, with the objective of promoting the advantages of the city. 5 Lyon Initiatives 05 I-Care, the new healthcare cluster in Rhône-Alpes ZOOM The Rhône-Alpes healthcare technology cluster, called I-CARE, was launched recently. This name means first and foremost that it is crucial to put technology and innovation at the service of healthcare to further medical progress. The cluster s governance system comprises 14 manufacturers representing the healthcare technology sector, 10 institutions and two qualified persons. The cluster s purpose is to guide and validate the initiatives proposed by the cluster and its partners and to consolidate their strategies, so as to sharpen the competitive edge of the region s companies. Cultural news 2010 Once more, 2010 is poised to offer an outstanding cultural scene in Lyon. Upcoming events include the second Greater Lyon Film Festival, excellent shows at the Fine Arts Museum, the Nuits Sonores Festival, an all-new retrospective of the French artist, Ben, at the Contemporary Art Museum, and much more! Nuits Sonores 2010 The Nuits Sonores Festival, which is dedicated to digital and independent electronic music and culture, will be held this year from Wednesday, May 12 to Sunday, May 16, 2010, like every year during the long Ascension Day weekend will be the eighth time this increasingly popular festival is held. In 2009, 67,500 people attended. Like every year, the festival will showcase the many facets of Lyon through events in some 40 different locations: concert halls, abandoned industrial zones, museums, galleries, movie theaters, squares and streets, bars and clubs, and more. Ben Retrospective After Andy Warhol in 2005 and Keith Haring in 2008, in 2010 the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) of Lyon is paying homage in 2010 to the work of Ben Vautier, a major artist of the 20th century known for his performances, installations and paintings. It will be the largest retrospective ever dedicated to the artist. The exhibition will take place from March 3 through July 11, In a surface area of 3,000 sq. meters, i.e. the entire space of the MAC of Lyon, over 1,000 works will retrace 50 years of creation, from the very first productions in Nice to the most recent, including appropriations, performances, paintings and installations. All the themes that Ben explored in the series that brought him fame are brought together for the very first time: Bananas, Ego, Gestures, Ethnicity, Sex, Truth, etc. This unprecedented show also presents new videos and works created especially for the occasion. By returning Ben s works to their historical context, this retrospective will enable visitors to deepen their understanding of a world that, up until now, was often only perceived in its most media-centric aspect. The company now has a highperformance team of engineers working in the medical, on-board software, instrumentation, industrial and aeronautics sectors, as well as in the field of consumer products. The methodologies of Anthemis range from design based on specifications and/or on a force account basis, to integrated manufacturing of products (local or Asian subcontracting) including packaging and transport. Anthemis, which has more than 50 recurrent clients, focuses on start-ups, very small businesses, small-to-medium businesses and major corporations. Aderly s teams have supported Anthemis with the process of setting up for business in Lyon, especially in its search for sites in the Lyon region and its recruitment requirements. QUANTIS Quantis has been a specialist in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) or the eco-evaluation - of products and companies since Formerly called Ecointesys, it helps companies to implement their sustainable development strategy. With an office already in Paris and Soissons, the company has chosen to expand its presence in France as of 2009 by opening a new office in Lyon. With Aderly s help, Quantis France has now set up in a 55-sq. m office space, which it shares with Novallia, a partner company. The company currently employs one person in Lyon, but is set to increase its operational potential in the Lyon area over the coming months. Apart from LCAs, Quantis develops IT solutions that make it possible to measure a company s environmental impact and thus to assist them in labelling their products, as was made mandatory by the Grenelle environment forum. Green e, Quantis first web software, enables companies to accumulate their environmental data so as to obtain the highest added value. The second generation of this IT solution is currently being developed and will be brought out this spring. Quantis is a product of the Ecosystems management laboratory at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, and the consulting team of the Canadian Interuniversity Research Center for the Life Cycle of Products, Processes and Services (CIRAIG), Montreal. Based in Switzerland, it has offices in Canada (Montreal) and the United States of America (Boston). It employs 35 people around the world Success Story We chose Lyon for its strong economic dynamic, which makes it a very attractive European location for business. 7 Businesses thrive in Lyon 07 SILIKEN The Spanish group Siliken Ltd, created in 2001, is a major actor in the sustainable energy sector. It has been present in France since March 2008 and recently opened its third regional agency in Mions, near Lyon. Aderly helped the company to set up in and especially to liaise with other key local actors in the sustainable energy sector, such as the Ecoenergies cluster. Aderly will also provide its expertise in human resources over the next few months as Siliken recruits an expert engineer. Setting up in the Rhone-Alpes region was the natural choice for Siliken France, since solar energy constitutes one of the region s key economic sectors. Siliken France also intends to develop partnerships with local installation companies, suppliers and authorities to contribute to the region s growth and create employment. For Siliken France, developing this network is essential to the set up, quality and maintenance of its installations. Siliken France works in three main areas: the sale of solar energy equipment (solar modules, inverters, integration systems and complete installations), the design and build of turnkey projects including the supply and installation of equipment, the administrative formalities that accompany it and the leasing of surface area (roof space) for the installation of solar power stations. The company also has its own research centre, which provides technical advice on the design and build of customized solar power projects. Committed to a national development plan, the company plans to set up two more agencies before the end of 2010, thus raising its total to 5 in France and its total staff to 50. CARTOON DESIGN Cartoon Design, a packaging consultancy based in Toulouse since 1982 and more recently in Paris, opened a new sales and marketing office in Lyon at the end of Specializing in packaging in the agro-food and healthcare sectors, this agency s arrival in Lyon is a logical step, as one of the firm s key selling points is its closeness to its clients. In the Lyon region, the consultancy has found a vast pool of potential clients, thanks to the large number of companies in these sectors.
