For seven days we will explore one of Europe's most beautiful and historic cities, Budapest, and discover the music, art and architecture of this remarkable capital, divided by the fabled Danube River. Dean Dalton, the voice of classical music at KUHF Radio, and his wife, Zsófia, have organized a memorable tour for us. I am sure you will enjoy the unique perspective that Zsófia and I, both native Hungarian speakers, will provide. We will be staying at the beautiful Kempinski Hotel, just steps from the Danube River and the exquisite shops of the "Váci Utca." Professors from Pázmány Péter Catholic University will host two half-day tours, highlighting the rich history of Hungary, including visits to the magnificent St. Stephen's Cathedral, Kossuth Square, sites of the 1956 Revolution, and the very impressive Parliament building. We will also be the special guests at a private recital, A Musical History of Hungary, performed by Dr. Alex Szilasi. We will also attend three musical performances at venues as diverse as the Hungarian National Opera House and the new Béla Bartók Concert Hall. 2 Budapest & Beyond a Cultural Tour of Hungary September 20 to 28, 2011 Hosted by Dr Robert & Marianne Ivany Tuesday, September 20: Depart from Houston on your preferred airline. Continental, Lufthansa, and KLM all offer good connections and competitive prices. Wednesday, September 21: Dean Dalton will meet incoming flights and arrange for your transfer and check-in at the 5-star Kempinski Hotel Corvinus. Budapest, the Danube into Buda and Pest. Today's focus is on ancient Buda, with its narrow medieval streets, Fisherman's Bastion, and Mátyás Church, named for the great Renaissance Hungarian King Mathias Corvinus, whose name also honors our hotel. New York Cafe in Budapest Located in the heart of Budapest, this is one of the Leading Hotels of the World, providing spacious rooms with exquisite interiors and state-of-the-art conveniences. Take some time to settle in and freshen up before our welcome dinner. Following lunch together nearby, you may wish to remain on Castle Hill to explore the history of Hungarian Art at the National Gallery, housed in the former Imperial Palace, or return to the neighborhood around our hotel where all the best shops are found. Thursday, September 22: Begin each day with the Kempinski sumptuous breakfast buffet; get up early, you don't want to miss this! This morning, a professor from Pázmány Péter Catholic University will take us first to the Citadel overlooking the entire city, bisected by the "Beautiful Blue Danube" Friday, September 23: This morning, we concentrate on the history of the newer, Pest side of the city that surrounds our hotel, again with a professor from Pázmány Péter Catholic University as our guide. We discover the beautiful squares and monumental buildings built during the glorious final decades of the AustroHungarian Empire that then witnessed the horrors of World War II and the 1956 Revolution. Included are guided visits through St. Stephen's Basilica and the stunning Parliament building. Traditional weaving and the former Bishop's Palace in Eger Following lunch, we will travel a short distance outside the city to visit the 17th-century Grassalkovich Palace at Gödöllö (below), former summer residence of the Habsburgs where the Empress Elizabeth, "Sissy," Bavarian by birth, monarch by marriage, Hungarian by choice, often stayed.

3 The Great Market Hall and Fisherman's Bastion (below) Saturday, September 24: This morning you might like to relax or visit the Great Market Hall, a marvelous piece of historic architecture in its own right, which houses literally hundreds of shops, offering everything from fruits and vegetables, to meat and fish, to handicrafts and collectables: the perfect place to pick up souvenirs and gifts for family and friends. Sunday, September 25: Following a leisurely breakfast (and allowing time for anyone who wishes to attend Mass in Hungarian at the cathedral), we board our coach to explore some of Budapest's heritage of modern architecture, from Bauhaus to Deconstructivism. Included are buildings by Béla Hofstätter and Ferenc Domány, and private villas by Farkas Molnár. Traditional costume, Eger - Hungarian National Opera (below) Monday, September 26: Today, we take a more extended excursion, to the famous wine region around Eger. In addition to cellar visits, a wine-tasting lunch and a stroll through the lovely center of Eger itself, we also tour Hollókö, a UNESCO-protected ethnic village where we step back in time to watch demonstrations of traditional weaving and other crafts. MUSICAL PERFORMANCES Our coach picks us up at noon for lunch at the New York Café, a study in over-the-top neo-baroque. Afterwards, we visit Pázmány Péter Catholic University where we are treated to a lecture/recital: A Musical History of Hungary. Then you may wish to attend Mass (in English) at the nearby Jesuit Church of the Sacred Heart before returning to the hotel. A highlight will be the new Palace of Arts with its fascinating mix of styles, where we will be treated to a guided tour and demonstration of the magnificent 92-register pipe organ in the Béla Bartók Concert Hall, discovering first-hand the complex process involved in its construction, its inner functions, and its incredible range of sound. Although schedules are not yet available, the season will be in full swing when we are in Budapest and we are confident there will be a rich variety to choose from. First category seats for three performances are included in the price of your tour.

It houses extensive collections of late medieval and renaissance masters, tapestries, decorative arts, ecclesiastical items and sacred relics. We have lunch and return to Budapest overland, making a stop at Szentendre, a village which has become a mecca for artists and craftspeople, offering you one last chance to pick up authentic and unique gifts and souvenirs before tomorrow's departure. Guaranteed Departures: Dean Dalton Tours guarantees the departure of most escorted programs that reach the stated minimum number of participants (15 for this tour), with exception only in case of "force majeure." This includes any major world event that adversely affects international travel patterns, or other circumstances beyond the control of Dean Dalton Tours. Claims and Refunds: Except for verifiable extenuating circumstances, refunds are not made for any missed tour services or activities. For verifiable claims to be considered, they must be received in writing within 30 days of the termination of the tour and be accompanied by supporting documentation. Any adjustment will be based on the actual cost of the services involved and not on a per diem basis. Adjustments will not be made for unused sightseeing trips or meals. Dean Dalton Tours will not accept any liability for any claims not received within 30 days of the termination of this tour. Photography: Dean Dalton Tours reserves the right to take photographs or videos during the operation of any tour or part thereof, and to use the resulting photography for promotional purposes. By booking a reservation, tour members agree to allow their image to be used in such photography; any tour members who prefer that their image not be used are asked to identify themselves to their tour escort at the commencement of the tour. Limits on Responsibility: Dean Dalton Tours, LLC is a Texas corporation based in Houston. It purchases transportation, hotel accommodations, restaurant, and other services from various independent suppliers that are not subject to its control.
