3 Live, work and play at 301 Ohio Street This mixed-use development project was designed with its surroundings in mind. 301 Ohio Street in Buffalo, N.Y. consists of five floors and 52,000 square feet of all new construction. Twenty-one apartment units in both one- and two-bedroom configurations are located on the upper three floors, ranging from 878 to 1,400 square feet. The building also has two restaurants on the first floor and 10,000 square feet of commercial space on the second floor. Each apartment unit is equipped with a modern interior and a balcony, providing scenic views of the Buffalo River and Lake Erie. This whole building was a new build, Caitlin Krumm, manager of marketing and sales for Ellicott Development, says. Ellicott Development owns the 301 Ohio Street property. This exciting new building delivers modern architecture, great views of the Buffalo River and build-tosuit floor plans just blocks from historic downtown, Canalside, KeyBank Center, Coca-Cola Field and River Fest Park. 301 Ohio is the epitome of Buffalo s renaissance. 6 Kenmore Mercy Hospital s latest renovations, additions By Cindy Chan Kenmore Mercy Hospital is in the midst of a welldeserved makeover. According to Jim Sullivan of Picone Construction, the general contractor, the hospital s main project was the Phase 1 project which was the operating room expansion built by Telco Construction the year before. The principal section of the Phase 2 work performed by Picone Construction was carried over three phases beginning in September of last year. The recently completed first phase of the Phase 2 project was the expansion and relocation of the surgery holding and recovery unit. The second phase was the total renovation and expansion of the post-surgical anesthesia unit (PACU), and the third phase, recently completed, included several smaller renovations, specifically a new surgery department administrative suite, the expansion of surgical locker rooms, new offices for the medical staff, a new medical library and conference room and a new physicians lounge. Sullivan says the approximately 14,000 square-foot surgery holding and recovery unit now consists of 32 new bays, of which 11 are private rooms, along with a new waiting room and reception area. The second phase is the installation of a PACU unit, consisting of 12 treatment bays for patients immediately after surgery, an isolation room and a new nurses station. Sullivan says this unit received new floor finishes, ceilings and skylights. As a result of all these changes, the hospital had to move quite a lot of staff members around. Constantino worked with Kideney Architects to create a pleasant environment that did not appear institutional and where many elements of the design were based on evidence-based design research for health care environments which have proven to provide healthier patient outcomes. There are multiple skylights throughout the unit, which are placed along the patient s path and near the nursing station to bring natural light inside for all to appreciate. The design also features an elaborate ceiling design which incorporates these skylights and that originates in the waiting room. The ceiling design weaves through the holding/recovery unit and PACU, providing interest and a familiar aspect of the space in an effort to enhance each patient s experience, Constantino says. In addition to the newly added operating suites, Constantino mentioned that Kenmore Mercy Hospital underwent several large projects over the last few years specifically a 70,000-squarefoot expansion on the south side of its campus that included a new and expanded state-of-the-art emergency department at ground level and a new orthopedic unit with 24 private rooms and a newly renovated and connected rehabilitation unit for physical, occupational and speech therapy.
