2 HISTORIC INFORMATION The Volgograd region is a favorable land located in the Great Entre Rios of the Volga and the Don. The territory of our region has the world importance in respect of cultural and historical heritage and natural wealth. During era of the Stone Age people lived here. The Great Entre Rios keeps memory of ancient civilizations and great battles. The capital of the region is the hero city Volgograd. The name of the city has been changed three times. It was founded in 1589 as the watch-fortress Tsaritsyn for protection of southeast borders of the Russian state. In 1925, Tsaritsyn was renamed into Stalingrad and it went down in history as a symbol of invincibility and unexampled heroism. The great Stalingrad Battle laid the foundation to fundamental change during the World War II. In 1961, the heroic city of Stalingrad was remained into Volgograd and the region was called the Volgograd region. Today Volgograd is the modern industrial and cultural center of the South of Russia. The largest towns of the region are Volzhsky, Kamyshin, Mikhailovka, Uryupinsk, each of them is unique in its own way. The small towns and countries of the Volgograd region keep local color of the real Russian province. 3

There are black earth and chestnut soils in the steppe zones and light-chestnut in the semi-deserts. The grassland vegetation of steppes and semi-deserts has great economic value; it is used for haymaking and pastures. The river valleys are rich in floodplain soils which are formed on river deposits. Annually after a high water the silt rich in nutrients is deposited here. Such soils are ideal for cultivation of vegetables, melon and gourds, and fruit and berry crops. These soils are also good for meadow herbs. Especially there are lots of such soils in the Volgo-Akhtuba flood-land. 5 INDUSTRY The large industrial enterprises of fuel and energy and defense industry, metallurgy, chemical and petrochemical production, construction industry, automotive industry, light and food industry are located in the Volgograd region. There are more than 4000 industrial enterprises among them about 500 large and medium enterprises. 6 AGRICULTURAL COMPLEX PLANT-GROWING CATTLE-BREEDING The Volgograd region has the developed agricultural production and it is one of the largest producers of agricultural products in the Russian Federation. The region has powerful natural-climatic potential, which allows satisfying internal demands and significantly affecting the formation of the production market of Russia. Volgograd Region takes the 10-th place in the country in terms of production of the agricultural products, the specific weight of the region in the gross production of agricultural products amounts to 2,6 percent. Agricultural complex of the Volgograd region has significant potential: land and labor resources, pretty well developed transportation infrastructure, and proximity of the international sales markets. The region takes the third place after Altai krai and the Orenburg region in terms of the sizes of the agricultural lands. The state agricultural policy implemented in the Volgograd region aims to increase the volume of investment, labor productivity and the size of a salary in agriculture. FLORA AND FAUNA The flora and fauna of the Volgograd region is rich because of good geographical position, favorable climate and variety of landscapes. There are more than 15 thousand species of animals and more than 2,5 thousand species of rare plants in the Volgograd region. The region is rich in ornithological territories of international importance. The rivers and basins are full of 80 species of fishes. 46 territories such as natural monuments, state nature reserves, outstanding natural territories, landscapes and health and recreation areas are specially guarded in order to keep natural environment and support ecological balance

9 NATURAL PARK ELTONSKY NATURAL PARK "VOLGO-AKHTUBA FLOOD-LAND" It is located in Pallasovsky district of the Volgograd region. It is located in the territory of three districts: Total area is 106 thousand hectares. Sredneakhtubinsky, Leninsky and Svetoyarsky. The total area is 154 thousand hectares. This park is one of the most interesting natural territories of the South of Russia including amazing natural colors, a high biological and landscape diversity. The sights of the territory of Prielton krai includes the only undisturbed massif of desert steppes in Europe, the mountain Ulagan, Presnolimansky height, abundance of rare species of plants and animals, steppe barrows and, of course, the largest in the world the salty lake Elton. The lake Elton is unique by its origin, chemical composition, stocks and balneological properties of the medical brine and mud. The water surface lake area is 18,0 thousand hectares. A brine mineralization is in 1,5 time more than in the Dead Sea. 16 The Volgo-Akhtuba flood-land is a unique natural complex "a life oasis" situated in a semi desert area of the South of Russia. It is the last and the only site of the valley of the Volga with a natural structure. The unique value of the flood-land is swampy area, ornithological territories of the international importance, and places of nesting and rest of birds, water meadows, spawning areas, fertile flood plain soils and oak forests. 17

10 NATURAL PARK "DONSKOY" It is located in Ilovlinsky district of the Volgogradx region. The total area is 61,9 thousand hectares. The park is located in a place of maximum rapprochement of two largest rivers of Europe the Volga and the Don. The territory is rich in cretaceous mountains which are cut through by deep ravines canyons with extensive massifs of feather-grass steppes, water meadows, flood-plain forests and carbonaceous rocks on the right bank of the Don. 18 NATURAL PARK "NIZHNEKHOPYERSKY" It is located in Alekseevsky, Kumylzhensky, Nekhayevsky districts of the Volgograd region. The total area is 231,0 thousand hectares. The natural park "Nizhnekhopersky" is the cleanest river in Europe. The territory is rich in the Khoper with its inflows Buzuluk, Kumylga, Akishevka and Tishanka, big massifs of virgin steppes, oak, flood-plain and ravine forests, sand with plants, birches, numerous springs with pure drinking water, granite boulders that are the remains of the Dneprovsky freezing. 19

11 NATURAL PARK "UST-MEDVEDITZKY" It is located in the territory of Serafimovichsky district of the Volgograd region. The total area is 51,2 thousand hectares. The river Don divides the park territory into two absolutely contrasting parts. The right bank is hilly, steppe and cut up by balks and ravines. The left bank is flat, with lakes, small rivers and flood-plain and ravine forests. The main sight of the natural park is flood-plain and ravine forests along the Don, the Medveditsa and the Protok, a set of springs, virgin meadows with feather-grass steppes, and also numerous lakes and dead rivers. NATURAL PARK "TSIMLYANSKY PESKI" It is located in Chernyshkovsky district of the Volgograd region. The total area is 76,0 thousand hectares. The total area is 76,0 thousand hectares. The natural park "Tsimlyansky peski" is located on the coast of the largest Tsimlyansk Reservoir in the region where industrial catch of common fresh water fish is done. The territory of the natural park includes a huge Dono-Tsimlyansky sandy massif - an absolutely unique natural place - which doesn't have any replicas in the world. The peculiarity of the park is herds of horses mustangs. The area of forest is 12,6 thousand hectares

The brightest place of the park is the Scherbakovskaya gully. This district is named "the Volga Switzerland" because of resemblance of gully slopes with the foothills of the Swiss Alps.
