T Fun! ime Flies when You re Having Hope you ve had an outstanding summer of cruising and fun at the club. The Wednesday lunches have been great, as have the cookouts & happy hours. Aug. 29 will be the last date for Wednesday lunch then we re switching back to the 2nd Thursday lunches for the remainder of the year. If you ve enjoyed the lunches and hope to see them continue next year, please send your comments to the office, and/or talk to Berkeley Smith. Next year is a huge year as it s our 100th Birthday at PYC. If there is a committee you d like to work on or have any ideas for the year ahead, please call or Berkeley Smith our Commodore for the Centennial year. ******************************* The Cruising Committee has done an outstanding job this year with their innovative cruises ~ be sure to join us at Beacon Rock at the end of Sept. for great food & scenery. There s also a terrific spa at Bonneville Hot Springs and a the PORTLIGHT published monthly by the P O R T L A N D Y A C H T C L U B 1241 NE Marine Drive Portland, Oregon P: F: office@portlandyc.com EDITORS Jim and Debbie Butler PHOTOGRAPHERS Frank Tillman OFFICERS AND TRUSTEES Commodore Vice Commodore Secretary/Treasurer Rear Commodore Trustee Year 2 Trustee Year 2 Trustee Year 2 Trustee Year 1 Trustee Year 2 Heather Adams (power) Berkeley Smith (sail) Jerry Miller (power) Doug Foster (sail) Nick Johnson (sail) Nancy Kirk (sail) Eric Gazow (power) Wylie Grabish (sail) Mike Stansell (power) couple of great hikes so lots to do while at Beacon Rock. Up-River Cruise was spectacular! Many cruisers were able to join at different locations and take advantage of a leg of the cruise that worked for them. We had a treat in Ilwaco as the committee arranged for a condo above the marina for our cocktail party. The next day the fishing crew caught plenty of salmon to take over to Astoria for the annual fish fry. Mike & Kathy Stansell were in Ilwaco to greet us after being north for a month. In Astoria we had a huge crowd and a memorable fish fry. The crew of Joannie,. Roberta, Don, Dale, Ken & Pam kept us in all you could eat deep fried walla wallas, salmon, halibut, sauces, drinks and cookies. It was a gastronomical gala. The cruise then headed off to Cathlamet where we were served steaks to rival the Ringside. The days were hot and the food was excellent. Then it was off to Martin Slough where we had a dinghy dinner, played cards and dominos & enjoyed potluck brunch. We then headed off into some cloudy weather for Eastdock. There were some of the original cruisers but we added a huge contingent of new arrivals ~ with kalbi ribs & chicken barbequed on the dock & simores by the campfire on shore. Tom Kern s infamous gas blender was busy blending concoctions for all participants most of the weekend. Beacon Rock had a lot of sign-ups, but with the rain arriving, 4 boats and 3 carloads showed up for dinner on the dock. Don Dell brought out 2 fireplaces and we kept warm on the dock for drinks and laughter. The next day was spent at Bonneville Spa ahhh! Then the sun came out and we were off through the locks to Hood River. The lockmaster was very accommodating & the scenery was spectacular. The river above the dam was like a lake Hood River had public docks with power and shopping and restaurants that surpassed our expectations. Next we were off to Cascade Locks where some went out fishing and others stayed back in the sunshine to read and walk into town for ice cream. We spent sometime there perfecting our horse shoe game at the local pub, and then dined with the locals on the dock for our last evening there. The last night was spent at Camus, always fun, topped off with Parker House dinner yum. It was a fabulous cruise except that now we need to go on a serious diet! For September we plan on honoring the Auction Donors at the Sept. 14 cookout with a Pirates theme & some different fare. We ll be preparing Caribbean side dishes to include tropical salads, rice, fruit plates etc., and you will as always cook your own protein. There will also be a steel drum band performing (hopefully on the patio) to add to the festivities. Summer is again moving at a fast pace so join in on the fun while it s here. The next day is the wine tour (always fun). On Sept. 22 after the Fall Regatta, there is the Oktoberfest, complete with an authentic German Oom Pa band! The sausages are custom ordered from a local supplier & are the best in town so be sure to call in your reservations. Besides the PYC Fall Regatta, on Saturday Sept. 22, there s the annual Sail for the Cure on Sept. 23rd call Nancy Kirk or Karen Anderson for info. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * New Toilets! Greg Allison and Valerie Hettman, new Members as of this past June donated 6 new toilets for the women s restroom at the club. They were just installed and are the latest and greatest. HUGE thanks! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The flagroom furnishings are ordered! House & Grounds has done a terrific job with the remodel. It s been a huge task so please give them your kudos. If you have not yet participated, the fundraiser is still on. BIG thanks to all who have contributed to prepare our Clubhouse for the years ahead. You will be remembered on the plaques that will soon be ordered so that we ll have them in time for the dedication. Sailing: Sailing Captain Mark McCuddy has kept you busy with Regattas, Mauni Elliotts, Beer Can Races, and the Gold Rush. For information or to sign up as crew, Mark. Also - please forward any racing photos you have onto Nancy Kirk so we ll have them next year for the Centennial Calendar and Roster. What ever you re up to this summer, thank you for being a part of PYC ~ fair winds and sun filled days to all! Heather Adams, Commodore

3 PAGE 3 The Portlight 9.07 F A J I T A S O N T H E W A T E R hanks to everyone who joined T us for Fajitas on the Water at the Vancouver Yacht Club in Camas. The weather was a little on the muggy side but with a delicious dinner, dingy rides and a visit from the Columbia Queen going up river to Lewiston, Idaho we all had a great time. We were only able to view the ship from the dock. We asked if we could join them on the ship, it looked like they had a large dance floor with a bar, but we were S ummer is the cruising season with many of our members going north and club cruises on the Columbia. Things were different in the past as Ray Hansen remembers. Ray Hansen, whose father was a member in the 1930 s remembers the clubs cruises in the 1930s (Ray joined in 1943): The PYC Cruise that all of us young kids of PYC members looked forward to was what was then call the Barbecue Cruise or maybe later after my time the Sand Bar play day. The cruises that I remember were in the late 1930 s to Rooster Rock Beach. This was before the present day park was developed. Walt Cap Elliott (Glenn s father) the Port Captain at the time, would arrange for a large beef to be barbecued in a pit on the beach. He and his helper George Washington, (I really believed that was his name) would come up the night before to start the fire going for the feast the next day. The kids would badger George the next morning to get a taste before it was served to everyone else. There were all kinds of events for both the kids and parents; swimming, dinghy rac- unable to because of the new restrictions put in place by the Department of Homeland Security. Oh well, we still enjoyed partying on the Camas dock. Hope to see you on the river. Ken & Pam Emmons Vince & Debbie Sweeney Dennis & Carrie Vaughn Your Cruise Committee C R U I S I N G I N T H E S ing, softball throwing for the kids and three legged races for the parents. The secret to winning the dinghy races was to be the first to borrow Milt Henderson s lap strake boat as you would leave the others behind with this. It was always a contest between me and Jack Elliott to see who could get to Mr. Henderson first. There were tables set up loaded with prizes such as jack knives and yo-yos arranged by John Sprouse Sr, (John s dad and owner of Cavu II) to be given for all of the different events. The table looked to us to be at least 100 feet long. We would spend hours before the races started going over the prizes to pick out which ones we would choose when, and if, we won. My favorite prize was a knife that I used for many years to clean salmon when I was running my dad s boat at Astoria. I can still remember the fun we had and how we looked forward to this cruise. Can this sort of thing ever happen again for the kids of the present members? Walter A. Witschard Historian M A N AG E R S R E P O R T I t s already September. It seems that time keeps moving faster and faster. This fall we are extremely busy with events on the weekends. Along with club events we are busy with private parties. Remember using the club for your special private or professional parties. We are looking for a new office helper. Kimberly left for other opportunities. We hope that she finds what she is looking for. Remember that when you leave on your boat for extended times to park your vehicles away from the busy parts of the parking lot. Leaving your car in a prime spot makes it difficult for some of our members to access the clubhouse. Fred Manager Daughter of Neptune Are you a daughter or granddaughter of a PYC member? Would you like to represent PYC as our 2008 Daughter of Neptune? Are you years old? If you would like to represent PYC as our Daughter of Neptune, let us know! Please submit a brief letter telling us why you would like to be PYC s Daughter of Neptune. (Mail to the club office at 1241 N.E. Marine Drive, Portland, Oregon 97211) Due date is October 15th. The 2008 PYC Daughter of Neptune will be crowned at the Ladies Night Dinner on Thursday, December 6th. For more information contact: Carole Smith,

4 PAGE 4 The Portlight 9.07 T H E M I L L E M I G L I A P erhaps the most important event for sports racing cars, after the famed Le Mans 24 hour endurance race, is Italy s Mille Miglia (1000 Miles). The first Mille Miglia, a road race, was in Marques such as Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes Benz, and BMW, with the great racing competitors of the day, participated. World War II brought a brief stop to the event; although it was run during the war on a shorter course near Brescia. It resumed in 1947 on a route similar to the present one. In 1955 the race was won in a legendary drive by Stirling Moss and Dennis Jenkinson in a prototype Mercedes 300SL. A fatal crash in 1957 caused the event to be changed from an out-and-out road race to the high-speed rally, which it is today. The event, for 375 cars from all over the world, begins in Brescia on the evening of the first day with a two-hour run southeast to Ferrara. After a couple of hours sleep, the next day s course goes south towards Rome, through Ravenna, San Marino, Assisi and Spoleto. At midnight we arrived in Rome and drove through the streets with motorcycle escort (BMWs and Ducattis), blue lights flashing and sirens screaming, including a dash at full speed, around the Coliseum. After an excellent, albeit late, meal and a couple hours sleep, we left Rome for the final day s run north, back to Brescia, through Sienna, Florence, Bologna, and Cremona, with a rousing welcome at the finish, and a fine party in Brescia. In each city through which we passed, we were greeted by cheering throngs of spectators. We were treated like rock stars, and we loved every minute of it. The rally was a stirring experience, and the historic significance of this event was never far from our minds; our route covered 1600 kilometers or 1000 miles, which we completed in about 48 hours. Last year, Sail for the Cure had over 300 participants, onboard 56 boats. Everyone, from non-sailors to experts, is invited to sail on the beautiful Columbia River. Those without boats are welcome and will be paired with boat owners. After the sail, there will be a silent auction and a benefit dinner held at the Portland Yacht Club. All proceeds go to the Oregon and SW Washington affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation whose mission is to eradicate breast cancer as a lifethreatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. The event is sponsored by Providence Health Plan. Like the fight against breast cancer, sailing is a journey filled with triumphs, challenges and changes of direction. Each requires precise teamwork.
