2 Project Description Describe the project you plan to do. I will oversee and lead a construction project for the Perimeter Church Ropes Course of Camp Sports and Outreach. My team will create 15 signs and install the signs at each element location on the course. The signs will be of iron and will be assembled with welding, and the graphic plate will be attached with nuts and bolts. These signs will identify the locations of the course elements in the Camp Sports and Outreach woods. What group will benefit from the project? Camp and Sports Outreach Name of religious institution, school or community Telephone No Medlock Bridge Rd Johns Creek Ga Street Address City State Zip code My Project will be of benefit to the group because: Camp and Sports Outreach is non-profit ministry that is a part of Perimeter Church. This group reaches out to children in the community by showing them the gospel and by challenging them to reach goals that stretch their physical abilities. The construction of these signs will benefit Camp All American Sports and Recreation by assisting and advising participants through the course. The signs show the names of each event, inform people of which event they are at and guide them through the course. This concept was discussed with my unit leader on June 29, 2010 Date The project concept was discussed with the following representative of the group that will benefit from the project. Brent Curl Representative s Name Experiential learning and Facilities Manager Representative s Title June 8, 2010 Date of Meeting Phone No. 2

3 Project Detail Present Condition There is an adequate trail system in the several wooded acres where the ropes course is located, but there are currently no signs marking the events around the Camp All American Sports and Recreation ropes course. The three photos attached are representative of fifteen different venues that will be identified with the signs. Mohawk Walk Venue Spider s Web Venue

4 Trust Fall Venue Plans / Drawings / Designs The signs will be made with 2 x 2 angle iron, ¼ iron plate and 6 x12 aluminum graphic plate. The iron plate will be welded to the angle iron at a 45 degree angle by Richard King Welding under the direction of myself. The iron plate will be drilled out by drill team and then 4, ¼ bolts will attach the graphic plate to the iron plate.

Some of the steps may be completed concurrently, while others occur in a specific sequence. Richard King Welding is a contractor who is a family friend who I have personally worked with for years. Richard King Welding has agreed to submit to my direction in the construction of these signs. I am a capable welder, but do to safety and other issues, scouts and others cannot be instructed to perform the welding. I will instead lead professional welders, who I know personally, in the welding process. Step 1: Recruiting Effort See Helpers. Step 2: Fund Raising Effort See Financial Plan. Step 3: Quartermaster Team The quartermaster team will buy all needed materials and supplies as well as gather the necessary tools and transport them to the church. The angle iron plates are excluded from the materials and supplies to be picked up by the Quartermaster Team. A member of the Quartermaster Team will be assigned to pick up the iron plates. The team will led by a Project Quartermaster who will lead in the purchase of all items with cash received from fund raising and all receipts will be kept for documentation. The Project Quartermaster will remind workers that all borrowed tools will be returned in same or better condition. The Quartermaster Team will transport all purchased materials from the place of purchase to the appropriate location.. The Quartermaster Team will place the order though a phone call followed by an listing the specific requirements for the graphic sign to Signs By Tomorrow. The sign specs are listed in the Materials List and the name of each sign is listed on attachment #5. Signs by Tomorrow will adjust the size of the lettering to fit the plate size of each event. A member of the Quartermaster Team will be assigned to pick the graphic signs upon their completion.

13 Step 3: Site Selection Team The Site Selection Team will determine the specific location of the identification signs, and place orange marker flags. There will be a benefiting organization representative along with the site selection team to determine the specific location of each sign. Step 4: Drill Team The iron plates are being drilled before welding so that the iron plates can be drilled safely and more accurately since the plates will not be at a 45 degree angle. The Drill Team will drill 1/4 holes into the iron plate with metal drilling bits, using the corded drills, in locations based off the centered graphic sign. These holes will be there to attach the graphic sign to the iron plate with 1/4 x1 galvanized bolts and 1/4" nuts. The holes will be drilled to fit the graphic sign. This will be done by placing the graphic sign over the iron plate and then marking the spot with a center punch and hammer and then drill through the iron plate while the plate is secured with a C clamp.. Step 5: Weld Team A member of this team will transport the drilled iron plates to Conyers, Ga where Richard King Welding will weld the iron plate onto the angle iron to form the marker sign under my direction. The welders of Richard King Welding will sign in on the sign sheet. The iron plate will be welded on to the angle iron at a 45 degree angle using a Mig arc welder. The angle iron and iron plates are precut and onsite at Richard King Welding. The angle irons and iron plates are a part of their everyday supply. When welding is complete, if necessary an angle grinder will be used to buff off the area that was welded. Lunches will be brought by the welders themselves. Once welding is completed that day, the welded signs will be transported back to Perimeter. Step 6: Paint Team The painting process will take place over two days, which will allow the first coat of paint to dry. The welded signs will be transported back from Conyers, Ga. to Perimeter Church, and then the Paint Team will paint on the primer coat of paint over the entire sign, then let the painted signs dry overnight. The following day the final coat of brown outdoor metal paint will be applied to the signs, and then allow the signs to dry overnight. Both coats of paint will be painted on with hand brushes first in the areas that cannot be reached by the roller brush. Then in the areas that can be reached with the roller brush, they will use the roller to paint the remaining areas. The large plastic sheet will be used as a drop cloth for the painting process. Once painting is complete the paint brushes and rollers brushes will be disposed of properly and the roller itself will be cleaned in the paint thinner. Step 7: Assembly and Installation Team The workers this day will be doing a variety of tasks which include digging the hole, assembling the graphic sign to the painted plate, installing of sign, and cleaning the area. Holes will be dug using post hole diggers. They will dig a one foot deep hole that is six inches wide at each site marked by the orange flags. Assembly will include taking the graphic plate and attaching it onto the drilled and painted iron plate with the 1/4"x1 stainless steel bolts and the 1/4" nuts. Crescent wrenches will be used to tighten the nuts. Installation will include the assembly of the signs and the placement into their specific location and then be set into concrete. Follow the mixing instruction on the bag of concrete. The last two inches of hole will be filled with dirt for asthetic reasons. The levels will be used to ensure the signs are level and someone will hold the sign level until the sign becomes steady in the concrete. Leave no trace principles will be followed and we will leave the area in better condition than we found it, while picking up all trash.lunch will be provided for the team this day.

14 Financial Plan Financial Summary Materials: $ Supplies: $ Tools: $13.95 Total: $ Donations: Richard King Welding: $525 Amount to be fund raised: $ Richard King Welding will be making these donations because he is a personal friend. Letter writing campaign A letter writing campaign will be done to raise funds to cover the cost that were not covered by donations from the companies or individuals who gave supplies and materials. The letter writing campaign will be done in the following steps. I will lead two other volunteers, who will look up the addresses of families who will be receiving the fund raising letter and a self-addressed stamped envelope. The address will be written onto an envelope and then have the letter asking for donations placed in the envelope as well as the self-addressed stamped envelope. Then the envelope will be sealed, stamped, and later mailed. Richard King Welding will be making these donations because he is a personal friend. The letters will be sent to family friends requesting donations. The excess donations received will be donated by to Campus Sports and Outreach. There will be a project treasurer will keep track of all donations and be responsible for transferring them into the Troop 317 Eagle Project Account. All materials and supplies needed to be purchased will be paid for by the leader or members of the Quartermaster Team. These expenses will be reimbursed from the donations and/or earnings from the fund raising of this project which are held in a Troop 317 Eagle Project account. Those individuals who had the expenses will be reimbursed from that account by submitting a Troop 317 Expense report specifying the cost with receipts. See attachment #10 for Support letter No more than 25% of the total cost of the project will come from family donations.

Then during the installation day, some of the packs of bolts were not full threaded, so a worker was sent to purchase additional bolts to finish the project. The estimations for the paint needed were incorrect, there were 3 gallons of paint and 3 gallons of primer purchased but only 1 gallon of each were used. There were 15 bags of concrete purchased, since that is what the concrete companies website said would be required, but only 9 bags were used in the project. All unused materials were donated back to Perimeter Church s CSO Ministry. Supplies The project calls for 3 inch roller brushes to be used to paint the signs. The roller brushes that were purchased did not fit the rollers that were purchased so paint brushes were used to paint the signs instead. Lunch was supposed to be served to the installation team, but since we finished earlier than expected, I decided there would be no lunch needed. All unused materials were donated back to Perimeter Church s CSO Ministry. Tools A shovel was not included in the project, but one was needed for mixing concrete so the family shovel was used. The Troop 317 first aid kit was unavailable for use so the Boyce family first aid kit was used instead. Step-by-Step Signs by Tomorrow pre drilled the aluminum signs, but their drilled holes were slightly inconsistent. When the signs were being attached, a few did not line up. The cordless drill was used to drill out the aluminum signs so they fit the plate correctly. Schedule The drilling of the metal signs was done the day before welding was done, due to the availability of workers.

40 The schedule had planned that the priming day would be a separate day from the welding, but due to availability of workers, the priming was done at later that night. The schedule had planned for the site selection team to be done the same day as the welding, but to avoid people messing with the markers, it was done the same day as the installation of the signs. Helpers/workers There were fewer workers to show up then I expected, and this effected the days when I was able to work. I had to shift the work days so that some of the work days landed on the same day. Transportation After consultation with my Troop leaders, we determined that since all driving and transportation for my project was within the boundaries of the Atlanta Area Council, I did not need a Tour Plan, so one was not obtained.
