1 Volume 27, Issue 4 July/Aug 2018 Page 1 Los Padres President s Message: Backcountry Horsemen are a group of equestrians dedicated to protecting access to public lands while promoting gentle use and leave no trace principles. We do this by assisting with trail maintenance projects, following legislation, providing education, and through donation. We have a long standing tradition of passing down our values through support of our youth and young adults. For the past two years, our unit has assisted the newly founded Cal Poly Packing Enterprise Project. You may have met some of these dedicated students at our Rendezvous this past April in Paso Robles. Congratulations go out to them for the great job they did at Bishop Mule Days this year! Backcountry Horsemen of California offered a packing internship for an year old this summer in the Inyo National Forest. Our unit donated to help sponsor this internship. We understand the benefit of passing down packing traditions, and what better way than to support young people in these endeavors. Our unit has historically held educational days and campouts specifically for youth. Inside this issue: Presidents Message 1,2 Newsletter and Advertising 2,3 Board and Committee Members 2 Public Lands 8,9,11 Youth Programs and Campout App, 3,6 Rendezvous ,12 Bits and Pieces 7 Philosophy & Purpose 7 Membership and Application 4,10 Calendar/Events 5,13 I am proud to announce that we will be hosting several special hands on youth educational events this summer. 9 Volume 27, Issue 4 July/Aug 2018 Page 9 Good news, the Wilderness Land Trust has the McNeil parcels containing the trailhead to Trout Creek and Hi Valley trails under contract with the Real Estate Foundation of SLO! Attached is a description of the effort to preserve public access along Trout Creek and a map showing the different purchases already made. This is Trout Creek III. Now they need to raise money to buy the parcels and they are looking for community support in the form of donations or loans. They will apply for a carry over loan with the Packard Foundation in September, and the more community support, the better chance they have to get the carry over loan (a temporary loan until the US Forest Service can purchase the land). Please share this with your members and ask if your clubs could make a donation to support this critical access for the Condor Trail & Garcia & Santa Lucia Wilderness areas. 11 Volume 27, Issue 4 July/Aug 2018 Page 11 Public Lands update by Kathleen Phelps BEACH PARKING On June 19th, 13 equestrians went to the Grover Beach City Council meeting to provide input to the redesign of the hotel parking lot now that the conference center was modified to a smaller building. Although the staff recommended a re-design of the new proposal, and to delay the hearing until the next meeting (July 23rd), the City Council thankfully took comments from the public that had attended the meeting. The City Council was very receptive to our concerns which centered around safety, accessibility to horse trailer parking, adequacy of turning radius, historic use and enhancement to the public s experiences. The next Grover Beach City Council meeting is July 23rd at 6 PM. Come participate if you would like to see continued horse parking at the end of Grand Avenue. In a separate effort, Bob Perrault and Linda Clarke are coordinating a group of people to discuss how to take the proposal of an equestrian parking area south of Grand Avenue back to the Coastal Commission. They are meeting Mid-August. The Trout Creek III Land Acquisition - (UPDATE) is moving along and was helped by a $1, donation from your local BCHC Los Padres Unit! Thank you all members for your part in that donation, it will help demonstrate community support for the loan application to the Packard Foundation. The Trout Creek III Acquisition will protect equestrian access to the Hi Mtn and Trout Creek Trails, both which are part of the greater Condor Trail. It also secured the only public access to the Garcia Wilderness. The Wilderness Land Trust (WLT) is putting together a GoFundMe. Site which will make it easy for individuals to donate. In the meantime, if you are interested in donating, you can send donations to the Wilderness Land Trust, P.O. Box 11697, Bainbridge Island, WA Please make it clear it is for the Trout Creek III Acquisition.
