Thanks to all of you who attended and a big THANKS to Jeremy Lowe for his informative talk about Santa Margarita Lake and it s trail system. * Our sincere thoughts go to Craig and Jodi Smith and their son Blake who was injured in an accident defending us in Afghanistan with United States Army. * Our Unit has volunteered to help with the Live and Silent Auction, Saturday night at the State Rendezvous this year. Information about this event at the Merced Fairgrounds, March 19 th 21 st, 2010, is in your last BCHC State Newsletter. Come one come all and have some fun! * The Spring Camp and Ride is set for April th, 2010 at the Porter Ranch just east of Santa Maria, California (About 10 miles). This is a MEM- BERS ONLY ride. Make sure your dues are current. The ride fee is $20.00 per person. Pot Luck Dinners on Friday and Saturday night: it s a primitive ride so come prepared, in case of wet weather. This is a private cattle ranch, so NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED. Give Rover the weekend off. For your twenty dollars you get BBQ, (Beef and Chicken) along with campfire entertainment by Nancy Lee, renowned cowgirl balladeer. 3 Volume 18, Issue 2 March/April 2010 Page 3 From your Vice President Bill Chaides Good job for all of those who are starting off the New Year by keeping track of your volunteer hours and information. Be sure to relay that information in a timely manner. Your Education Chair, Nancy Kimmell, would like to record this information monthly this year in the hopes of reducing the extended time it takes to complete this task at the end of the year. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated. We hope that everyone will have an opportunity to participate in some of our unit outings and work projects. This not only helps support our philosophy and purpose as Backcountry Horsemen but provides a personal sense of satisfaction while helping out in the backcountry. The USFS held their annual Volunteer Wilderness Ranger/Wrangler training session on Saturday, January 23, 2010, at the Los Prietos Ranger Station in the Santa Barbara District. 65 people were in attendance for this year s training session. Administrative personnel from both the Santa Barbara and Santa Lucia Districts were present for their instructional presentation. They provided update and refresher information covering topics regarding USFS Volunteer employee ethics during public contact, communication and operating skills regarding the use of the radio, emergency medicine in the wilderness, how to conduct a work project, working with stock and forest service protocol. There were a variety of supporting volunteer groups and associations present to learn how to work with the forest service in providing assistance in implementing their goals. Many individuals in these other groups were recognized, acknowledged and awarded in appreciation for their many hours of volunteer services throughout the 2009 year. Individuals in our Backcountry Horsemen Los Padres Unit were also recognized for their contribution of volunteer hours for the 2009 year. Dennis Vaca: Bill Chaides: Otis Calef: Maureen Wallace: Kathleen Phelps: Nancy Kimmell: BCHC Lp Unit: reached his accumulated 1,000 hour mark. in his first year provided 558 hours of documented service and signed up 9 new USFS Volunteer Rangers for the Santa Lucia District. for his many hours in support of the Wrangler unit and transportation of equipment and supplies by pack stock into the backcountry. for her unwavering support with the Los Padres Forest Association Wilderness Wranglers. as head administrator of the Santa Lucia District with hands on participation, support and assistance with the many volunteer groups that aid the forest service. for her many hours in keeping communications open and providing the many logged creditable hours to the USFS from the BCHC-Lp Unit and for her volunteer hours of trail work. in accumulation, providing 2,177 hours of volunteer service in the backcountry by the Lp Unit members to the USFS. This year s 2010 USFS Volunteer Wilderness Ranger/Wrangler training was attended by 15 members of our Lp Unit. The following people attended to up date their training for the year: Bill Chaides; Nancy Kimmell; Everette Lambert; Dennis Vaca; Otis Calef; Maureen Wallace; Kathleen Phelps; and Ellie Livingston. The following people attended their first training for the year: Jack Garrettson; Terrie Garrettson; Paxton Pembroke; Bill Obermeyer; Jeff Nisbet; Rich Waller; and Emery Johnston. The forest service holds this training only once a year. Mark it on your calendar for next year, January You still may volunteer on any of the forest service work parties. 6 Page 6 March/April 2010 Volume 18, Issue2 PROGRAM FOR MARCH Our next scheduled Board and General meeting will be held the Wednesday AFTER the 2010 Rendezvous March 24, This year s Rendezvous is scheduled for March 19 th 21 st at the Merced County Fairgrounds. Be sure to mark your calendar and plan on attending and personally experience your State Board presentation. You will also have the opportunity to attend a variety of backcountry education classes and earn education points towards your Gentle Use Pin. Our meeting date of March 24, 2010, will be held at the A.J. Spur s Saloon and Dining Hall in Grover Beach. The same No Host dinner or drinks, order off the menu and pay individually will be provided. Please arrive early to order and finish your meal prior to the 7:00 p.m. meeting. There should be many items to cover for the coming year and information after the State s Rendezvous. I have invited a special guest speaker a 35 year historian of Mexico s early changing governments. Mr. Danny Neill spoke in Oklahoma City at the October 2009 National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum featuring Mexican Equestrian Culture. Mr. Neill will be providing an exceptional presentation of historical information of the early Mexican cowboy, the charros and their influences on the American West. He has contributed to many books relating to this topic. Please go to and follow up with clicking on Arte en la Charreria. (Don t miss this meeting.) IMPORTANT INFORMATION: California Trails Conference Foundation for those interested in promoting or working on trails, an educational trails conference will be coming to the Cambria area this April The California State Parks Department in conjunction with the California Trails and Greenways Conference will be holding an educational seminar April 21 st 23 rd (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) Equestrian groups are encouraged to attend and represent our interest. Many times the majority of multi-use trail attendees are hikers and bicyclists. An equestrian ride is still in the planning stages for the Hearst Ranch or Montana de Oro on Saturday, the 24 th. Please go for contact information and request to be put on the list for further information of attendance and notify other equestrian people and groups to attend. 7 Volume 18, Issue 2 March/April 2010 Page 7 SANTA LUCIA RANGER DISTRICT TRAIL REPORT March 2010 Manzana downstream from Nira: Passable to Schoolhouse by stock, a few trees down but easily bypassed. Water is running well, deep (3 ) in a few narrow crossings, but manageable. Hikers can make it easily, especially with walking sticks. From the Schoolhouse up the Sisquoc: My Opinion. Probably passable by stock but likelihood of several down trees, some high water crossings, some trail washouts leave one to do some orienteering to find the way. Since the area is so wide, getting to at least Water Canyon should be doable. After Water Canyon things could get pretty jumbled up as there are lots of crossings, and small trees, etc. probably too many obstacles for stock. Beyond Mormon, I think that the trail should be pretty good except for frequent washouts, (maybe even big blowouts), some very deep crossings between Sycamore and Foresters Leap, then OK to So. Fork. Don t forget a couple of the usual deep pools just before So. Fork. So Fork up stream: Probably a bad idea on horseback. Bad enough hiking. No trail, many down branches and trees, brushy, too many rocks, et al. After Cottonwood, I hear it is passable again to above Bear camps. Probably more down branches, but not too bad. Manzana upstream from Nira: A few trees down, but the can be circumvented, trail is good all the way to White Ledge. Trail to Big Cone Spruce is there but hard to find AND there is a pretty high wall, maybe 5 high that the trail crosses and there appears to be no easy way around it. So, Big Cone Spruce is also not a good idea for stock. The trail on up to White Ledge is good, possible some smaller tree falls, but generally OK to White Ledge. From there down to So. Fork it is not recommend for stock; too many down trees and total washouts of considerable size. Upper Lopez: Bill Chides is the expert, better call him. Big and Little Falls: Probably passable with stock, but Bill may know more. The conditions of the trails in the Machesna and Garcia Wildernesses are not known and access is limited. Dennis Vaca is the best source of info for them. Dave Weaver, Wilderness Ranger, SLRD, USFS Trail Work at Santa Margarita Lake next Saturday 3/6/10 from 9:00 am to 1pm, rain or shine. I'm a member of both both Atascadero Horseman's Club and BCHC, and have stepped up to coordinate and oversee trail work at Santa Margarita Lake for Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers (CCCMB). Meet at the parking lot by the front park entrance to get tools and break in to trail worker teams. Tools will be provided. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water and gloves. 8 Page 8 March/April 2010 Volume 18, Issue2 EDUCATION CHAIR MESSAGE Congratulations to those who are starting the New Year by keeping track of your information for our BCHC Lp Unit volunteer hours report form. Remember BCHC is a non-profit organization. We submit our information time, hours, mileage and stock use to be given a dollar value. At the end of the year, this information is compiled by our state education board and then provided to the BCHA education committee. All of the land managers and other trail users have trouble closing areas to us when WE ARE doing large portions of the trail work. The entire national total is a dollar value that gives our national representative significant clout when trying to emphasize why they should be listened to. To this end as we head into another year for volunteer efforts, I want to remind everyone how to go about keeping track of these hours. Description of work is any trail project, (brushing, trail recon (which includes any trail ride where you are checking the trail conditions), water bar, packing, garbage packing, trail head project). This also includes any trail rides (play days) you may do for pleasure or work, as long as you have available or include safety tips before riding or mention the purpose of BCHC to each other. Carry some of our Lp Unit business cards to hand out to people who ask about our purpose. In summary, I need: Names of your party; Time to and from project (this means from and back to home for each person); Miles to and from project) this means if two people are riding together and you are hauling stock one person gets stock travel miles and the other person gets personal traveling miles each is credited with mileage values); and last, the number of stock you took and days you were on the project. It is not that difficult to keep track. When you leave your house jot down the mileage and when you return jot down the mileage, keep track of the time it took you to get there and back, and the time you were on the trail or doing the project. If you are gone for a weekend or week, that is all considered time on the project, and last, the number of stock you have and the days you were out. If you can get that information to me, I can incorporate it into the appropriate form. ***ATTENTION, This last year (2009) I was able to report in 25,649.5 hours at a value of $406,124.78; 124,900 miles at a value of $122,280.40; Equipment value was $1,134.00; stock use and days at a value of $139, and materials donation of $ for a total money value for the Los Padres Unit contribution of $669, This next year, our goal should reach at least $1,000, for our Unit alone. I know we can do it if EVERYONE submits their time to be recorded by me. Starting this year, I would like to compile our Lp Unit s Volunteer Hours Report information monthly. Please report promptly. Already for January 2010, I have received the listed reported information. It is kind of like doing taxes LOG & REPORT monthly. L D Waller, Pack Trip into Kern River, Summer 1934 I have inserted some information in brackets to make the diary clearer, as I transcribed from his note book. Images credited to Pomona Public Library, The Frasher Foto Postcard Collection~ Richard Waller A journal my grandfather (Waller Park was named for him) kept on a horse pack trip to the Kern River back in He and others including Fred Goble of Preisker, Goble and Twitchell law firm, today it is Twitchell and Rice, and his Daughter Doris and other old time Santa Marians did these trips for many years. My mother went in 1956 on her first and last horse ride.) Richard Waller July 5. Up at 4:30 and breakfast and hiked to Golden Trout Creek. Doris said it was two miles but seemed like five. I think it was 5 miles and it seemed like 10. For half the trip the ground was flat, but the other half seemed straight up on end with huge boulders everywhere in just the wrong place. Then a hike straight down to the creek. One continuous cascade of rushing and falling water hedged in with towering cliffs of volcanic rock. We immediately began fishing for the famous golden trout as this is the only place in the world where the specie is pure. A huge waterfall at the lower end of the creek making it impossible for the other trout to come up the stream and breed. At noon when all assembled Doris had caught 12, John 12, I 11, Jim 9, Fred 9 and Bill who did not do any fishing caught 1 [?]. We cooked 55 golden trout for lunch right on the edge of the stream and were they good! The waterfalls on the upper end were magnificent. We started back for the camp about 3:30. Fred, Doris and John taking a new route up over one of the falls and around to another trail and found an easier way out, something that had never been done before and arrived back a good time ahead of Bill and I who returned to camp the same way we went. We were all pretty tired from the trip and were all in bed at 8 PM after a dinner of chile con carne and golden trout. July 6. We all stayed in bed until 8 AM and this was supposed to be a rest day. John and Jim went on a trip down the river fishing after breakfast. Doris was fishing later on her own while Bill and Fred worked all day in the camp and cooked corned pork and cabbage and as a piece de resistance made a lemon pie. It seems that I am the only one that did any resting. However, as they continue to feed me I am ok so far. Doris returned with 8 trout, Jim with 2 and John 2 one of which was 13 ¾ inches long, a rainbow. John and Jim had hiked about 10 miles to Little Kern Lake and back. Tonight [we go] to Conterno s, deer in the meadow. July 7. Up at 5 AM Breakfast, 6:30 on to Coyote Creek Meadows arrived at 10:30 AM, 6 miles in 4 hours all up hill. Altitude 9500 ft. John and Doris and Jim arrived much sooner and fished up. John had limit of trout by noon. Jim and Doris got limit. I got 8 and Fred cooked the trout right beside the creek. John ate 15 and then as he said, came up for air and ate 9 more. We had no bread or knives or forks so we ate the fish that were alive a few minutes before with our fingers. We all caught all the fish we wanted how they did bite every time we threw in a hook or fly. The meadow was beautiful. John and Doris and Jim returned and Bill and I left about 4 PM leaving Fred to visit Mr. Chiow [sp?]. Who had come in with his party from Mineral Springs [Mineral King?]. Bill and I made the trip back in two hours. John made it in 1 ½ taking shortcuts down the mountain [father always warned me about taking shortcuts down mountains!] We were all tired as we had climbed from 6500 feet to 9500 feet and back, so to bed by 8 PM. Sunday, July 8. We all stayed in bed until 9 AM except Fred who was up and around early. John ate a 15 inch trout for breakfast and 11 large hotcakes. We all loafed all day more or less ( I more and the others less ). In the evening we went to Conterno s store about ¼ mile and sat around his campfire until 8:30. To be continued next newsletter.. 13 Volume 18, Issue 2 March/April 2010 Page 13 MEET NANCY LEE AT THE SPRING CAMP AND RIDE! I ve been playing guitar and singing since I was 14. I have been very blessed with the ability to sing and play from my heart. I ve always been a cowgirl at heart and have loved horses and the cowboy way of life since I could talk. I started writing and singing my own songs at 16 and continue to do. The Cowboy Festivals have been an awesome forum for me to share my music and to develop a following of many fans who are now friends. I have had the opportunity to perform at the Autry Museum, the L.A. County Fair, The Visalia Fall Roundup, The Big Bear Cowboy Festival, Tehachappi Cowboy Dinner and Show, What A Cowboy Knows Festival in Bakersfield, and the week after your event will be my 16 th time performing at the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival. I have been the Musical Director for a cowboy church service at Ascension Lutheran Church in Thousand Oaks for 15 years. I have a CD, Cowgirl s Lullabye which had 2 nominations for awards from the Western Music Association and 6 nominations from the Maveric Awards including best overall female vocalist amongst every genre of music. I am currently working on my 2 nd CD and will be singing some of the songs off of it for you all! I sing about my love of all things cowboy and the Sierra mountains that I ve spent all of my life enjoying.
