1 Volume 26, Issue 2 March/April 2017 Page 1 Los Padres Times President s Message: Increased access to public lands is a benefit for all of us. We are a diverse lot when it comes to experiencing the great outdoors. For instance, just take a look at our local area. We ride dune buggies on the beach and mountain bikes at Montana de Oro, hike local scenic trails, camp, hunt, go horseback riding, and venture into the Los Padres National Forest with pack mules. Those of us that treasure the outdoors understand the importance of being good stewards of our lands. And we are progressive enough to realize the importance of working together for the achievement of our goals. The National Forest System Trails Stewardship Act passed last Fall. It s passage was the culmination of several years of coordination and hard work. Basically, this legislation keeps more trails accessible by expanding partnerships in trail management with volunteer organizations. Governmental agencies, conservation, sportsmen, motorized recreation, outfitter, and equestrian groups, including Backcountry Horsemen, were in support. The recent successful workday on Super Bowl Sunday at Montana de Oro is an example of how local groups can join together on behalf of local trails. 5 Volume 26, Issue 2 March/April 2017 Page 5 INCENTIVE QUESTION Nancy Kimmell Education Chair I had seven (6) responses for the January/February newsletter again thanks everyone for participating. The responses were Peggy Phaklides, January 7th, at 3:27 p.m., Larry Wesch, January 10th, at 11:16 a.m., Janette Wesch, at 11:16 a.m., Greg Feinberg, at 12:15 p.m., Shirley Rasmussen, at 12:15 p.m., and Barb Riley, January 11th, at 1:53 p.m. I have decided not to put a start date on the drawing, but if it is drawn at the meeting, then any entries after are not going to be included. So get your pick in!!!! The winner drawn was GREG FEINBERG. Congratulations GREG!! Greg will enjoy $20.00 off the price of our unit s campout. The answer to the Question: In the Country of Kazakhstan, what is the name of smoked fermented mare s milk? Was Kumis. The answer was located on page 6 in the Happy Camper Article at the end of that section. KUMIS is a fermented dairy product traditionally made from mare s milk. Kumis is a dairy product similar to kefir, but is produced from a liquid starter culture, in contrast to the solid kefir "grains". Because mare's milk contains more sugars than cow s or goat s milk, when fermented, kumis has a higher, though still mild, alcohol content compared to kefir. Even in the areas of the world where kumis is popular today, mare's milk remains a very limited commodity. Industrial-scale production, therefore, generally uses cow's milk, which is richer in fat and protein, but lower in lactose than the milk from a horse. Before fermentation, the cow's milk is fortified in one of several ways. Sucrose may be added to allow a comparable fermentation. Another technique adds modified whey to better approximate the composition of mare's milk. The next Question is: What is the name of stilts walker or dancer? The answer is located within a section of text throughout your newsletter. READ YOUR NEWS- LETTER!! A $20.00 certificate will be given to the person with the correct answers from the newsletter and must be presented with your pre-registration form to any of our unit s camping activity requiring a registration fee. This certificate is not transferable and not applied toward merchandise purchase. PLEASE NOTE IMPORTANT RESPONSES WILL BEGIN AS SOON AS THE NEWSLETTER IS ON FACEBOOK. Contact VIA (NJK@TCSN.NET) OR PHONE CALL TO ME (805) The correct responses will be placed in a drawing container and the winner selected at the following general meeting. You must give me your name in your . The winner drawn will be mailed the $20.00 certificate for remittance at any unit camping activity requiring a pre-registration fee. You may win more than once. 7 Volume 26, Issue 2 March/April 2017 Page 7 Durable Surfaces Happy Camper Column Richard Waller This season more than any other in recent memory requires us horsemen to be especially alert to trail conditions. I have found our backcountry trails to be any assortment of mud, water, bogs. As responsible horsemen we must be alert to these trail conditions and stay off them as needed. Kathleen and I discussed our trails the other day. It appears that many of them should not be ridden until there has been a week to two weeks without rain. Consider, a 130 lbs person puts 2.6 lbs per square foot pressure on the trail, bog or mud hole. A horse will put lbs per square foot on the trail, bog or mud hole (if I did my math right!). It is easy for horse hooves to destroy the tread on a soft and muddy trail. That sickening sound of your horse hooves sinking into mud, along with the floundering efforts of your horse to extract itself from the mud are things we want to avoid! As a sweeping statement, The Los Padres Forest trails and the hill trails at Montana De Oro should be avoided until we have two weeks of sunshine. The damage to the trails, and that other users can easily see horse damage are serious issues for us. Where should we ride? The beaches, Morro Bay, Pismo, the sand spit at MDO, Woodlands on the Nipomo Mesa and La Purisima Mission are all sandy trails, well drained and should be our primary riding locations for the time being. A note on rivers, I am think particularly of the Salinas River which is commonly ridden. Quicksand is caused by subsurface flows floating sand and sediment. After rains and high water when sand and sediment is displaced they are unconsolidated and highly susceptible to forming quicksand. Few things are worse than a horse getting into quicksand. The rescue of a horse or person is best done by positioning a fire engine near, and flooding the area with water, breaking the suction of the quicksand and allowing the victim to be floated out. Some fire engines in rural areas carry special equipment for precisely this task. You can see the problem. If an engine cannot get near, or cannot respond quickly, rescue is unlikely. Stay out of riverbeds until the firmness can be evaluated (watch for fresh ATV tracks, if they go through you might be safe. If they go halfway through, you might not be). Often, trails will be firmer than the unpacked ground nearby except when they aren t!. Ride on trails, avoid leaving them, watch the ground. until everything is thoroughly dry, much later this season. Don t skirt mud patches, ride through them to avoid damage to the area around the trail. The key words for our use are, Durable Surface Look for hard surfaces ride on those, avoid soft. When you stop for a break, look for durable surfaces. If you are camping, camp on durable surfaces, in the Sierra that is easy, camp on on the dry decomposed granite flats. If you are grazing your animals, move them frequently, both for avoiding over grazing and also tearing up the ground. A hobbled animal is easier on the ground than one in a portable electric fence or picketed. If you use either of those two techniques move your animal frequently. An aphorism I keep in mind is, let no one say to your shame, there was beauty here before you came. 9 Volume 26, Issue 2 March/April 2017 Page SPRING CAMP & RIDE at the INDIANS April 7,8,9. Fri Sun BCHC MEMBERS ONLY Send Registration form with your remittance to our Board Treasurer, We will have portapotties, and our usual BBQ. Please bring potluck dishes to share. We will need a few volunteers to cook. Someone with a truck who is not bringing a trailer will be needed to pick up the rental BBQ trailer in Paso Robles on Friday, and return it on Sunday. The riding is great, a fine oak and grass valley bordered by high mountains. A great ride is down to Wagon Rock and the cave which still has hooks from where the old timers switched from wagons to pack mules and hung their rigging off the hooks so the rats could not get to them. I will be working on a route to the historic Merle ranch, used today by the Forest Service as the Monterey District mule ranch. The Indians adobe is an historic adobe well worth visiting, with a very pleasant trail up the canyon behind the adobe. There is the Carrizo trail which our unit helped pay for trail work on last year. It is a great ride up into the mountains on the south side of the valley, with views of Junipero Serra peak, Salsipuedes Valley, eastward to the Gabilan range, and northwest into the Ventana Wilderness. The road across the river and to the closed Salsipuedes Ranch gate. I am working on a loop ride, I should have that mapped by March. If you are going to have a campfire at your camp, please; carefully excavate the sod 3 x3, place aside the fire area, have your fire in the cleared area. When you are done, drown your fire thoroughly, replace the sod, water. When you leave there should be no sign there was ever a fire at that spot. Directions to Indians (which is formally, Milpitas Valley: We will camp off Road #6 by the corrals.. Everyone should always have a map of where you are planning to trek. A link from Google Maps Directions can provide explicit directions. From the South areas, travel North on Hwy 101 past Paso Robles and then past the Bradley exit. Continue North and take the Jolon exit leading to Hunter Liggett military base. Continue on Jolon Rd. past North Shore, Lake San Antonio Intersection. Continue to the Hunter Liggett left turn entrance on to Mission Road. There is No check point at this location. BE SURE TO OBSERVE ALL POSTED SPEED LIMITS as they are STRICTLY ENFORCED. Continue on Mission Road about 4.9 miles and bear left at a military control curve and then bear right, turning right when you see a green steel bridge on your left. Continue on Mission Rd., you ll pass a Visitors Center on your right (don t stop), then you ll pass the Hunter Liggett Military Base Security Entrance, (do not enter -go straight) watch for the end of a chain link military fence on the right side of the road. Just before the end of the chain link fence at the intersection, you ll turn Left onto Del Venturi Road. After the turn, there is a SIGN directing you to the Indians and Santa Lucia Memorial Park. Continue on Del Venturi Rd., crossing the river, bear right at the intersection of Vasquez Boulevard, continuing on Del Venturi Road for about 10miles to the USFS boundary. Continue for about a mile or so, look for white post road numbers. On the left at Road #6 TURN LEFT, There will be a BCHC sign. The Dirt road is full of ruts and low tree branches high rigs use caution. REMEMBER, it is Primitive Camping, there are no facilities, we will have porta potties. There is a trough near camp. 11 Volume 26, Issue 2 March/April 2017 Page 11 VOLUNTEER HOURS This year I was very excited about the hours I received but also disappointed that I did not receive more. We submitted a total of only 21, hours and 140, total miles (personal and stock). The above amount calculates in dollar amount to $797, Pretty sad when I have always submitted hours and miles to total OVER $1,000, Last year, the dollar amount was $1,006, I still need more people to submit their volunteer hours to me. You do NOT, I repeat, NOT have to be doing PHYSICAL trail work. Whenever you go for a ride, you are observing the trail and if there is a problem, you need to report this. This is TRAIL RECON work. Also when you ride, take your clippers and cut some overgrown branches. This is basic labor. These hours need to be reported to me. I have enclosed a Volunteer Hours Form for you to clip out and USE!!! I have also enclosed an explanation of how to report your hours. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE CONTACT Nancy Kimmell, at or njk@tcsn.net. Volunteer hours are very important. Each unit submits their hours to California State. They collect all hours from all units and deliver to BCHA (National). These hours collected show the work we do on the trails and show our efforts to keep our access to riding areas. All of land managers and other trail users have trouble closing areas to us when we are doing large portions of the trail work. Nancy Explanation of Sections on Volunteer Report Description of Work trail project, is it brushing, trail recon, water bar, packing, garbage packing, trailhead project, how many trail miles, etc. Is this an educational clinic or class for members, public, 4-H, agency, etc.? Is this a public meeting, what about? Basic Labor Trail maintenance brush clearing, work not requiring skilled labor. (includes, cooking time, camp time, GU/LNT clean up time, general attendance at Rendezvous and BCHC events. Do Not Include Sleeping Time. (Basic Labor is the catch all for things you don t see fitting in other categories.) Continued on page 13

12 Page 12 March/April 2017 Volume 26, Issue 2

13 Volume 26, Issue 2 March/April 2017 Page 13 Skilled Labor Hours of activities requiring skilled labor such as packing, carpentry, bridge construction, use of power equipment saws, chain saws, cross cut saw, GPS, etc. (This is labor only, tool use time is reported under Power Tools.) Trail Recon Work Not requiring skilled labor. (Trail Condition reports, etc.) Trail Miles New for 2012, there are two categories. Actual trail miles worked on over the season are reported here. There is no dollar value assigned to this work. This new category will give a better picture of how many trail miles we actually work on/improve/maintain each season. (Miles of trail actually cleared) Wilderness Miles Only those miles cleared in a Wilderness Area. Trail Miles All other miles cleared. It is recommended to use a GPS coordinating system from trailhead to the junction to another trail. If a GPS is not available, use a "best estimate" of distances cleared. When a portion of a trail has been previously cleared or worked on needs additional work or maintenance, that section should be counted each time it is worked on. If you are able to ride a certain distance on a trail before coming upon downed trees or other obstacles that make the trail impassable and that area is worked on, then figure the distance from the trail head to the completed area cleared. Contacts- How many people did you talk to? (People you personally talked to and provide information about BCHC, flyers, how to join.) Admin Prep/Coord-- This is all paper work, office work, computer work, filling out volunteer reports, craft work, treasurer reports, news letter and meeting minutes Public Meetings Actual hours spent in attending or presenting at public meetings relating to BCH activities or issues. Unit meetings, State meetings, Board meetings and committee meetings. Administrative Service Includes the scheduling, coordinating and planning work rides within the unit as well as coordinating rides with agencies and/or agency representative. The value is calculated as follows: 3% of the total hours (automatically calculates) Travel Time Actual hours going from home to projects, work rides, educational or public meetings and back. Personal Vehicle Mileage Actual personal vehicle miles traveled from home to projects, rides and back. Use this if not hauling stock, otherwise use next column. NOTE: Often several people will travel together in one vehicle. In this case, one person (the driver) is credited with mileage. The passengers are credited only with travel time. Stock Hauling Mileage Actual vehicle miles traveled with trailer and stock from home to projects, rides and back. NOTE: Often several people will travel together using one trailer for several animals. In this case, one person (the driver) is credited with stock hauling mileage. The passengers are credited only with travel time. Note: Mileage is either Personal Vehicle or Stock Hauling --NOT both. Power Equipment Hours Total hours for power equipment used on projects, i.e., chain saws, power pruners, etc. Use local rate or if unknown can use BCH rates. {This is Rental Rates for tools, report hours of tool use even if you own tool.) Heavy Equipment Hours For use of heavy equipment used on projects-- backhoe, tractor, etc. Use local rate or if unknown use BCH rates. {This is Rental Rates for equipment, report hours of equipment use even if you own equipment.) In calculating the rate of power equipment or heavy equipment an additional $3.00/hour should be added to the rate calculation. Stock Used Number of stock used (Saddle and Pack) Stock Days Number of days that stock were used (1 day for each head of stock) Donations, Dollars or Materials Value Donations of money, material supplies (nails, gravel, etc.) from chapter coffers, personal accounts or business accounts. BCHC Education Columns Volunteer Report New items for 2012 are in Red -Education New for 2012, there are two categories. Teach Class--Actual hours spent in preparation and conducting educational clinics, seminars, classes, and LNT Training. (This entry assists the agencies in meeting their requirements for educational activities.) This is planners, instructors and presenters.
