8 West Coast wetlands protected by Nature Heritage Fund Associate Conservation Minister Nicky Wagner recently announced that Okuru landowners John and Nick Dalgety and their family have sold 56 hectares of important wetland to the Nature Heritage Fund. This purchase enables DOC to manage the land as a scenic reserve, preserving it for future generations to enjoy and making it available for Haast locals and visitors to access. The wetland will form a natural western boundary to the Okuru and Waiatoto conservation areas, which extend to Mt Aspiring National Park. The Dalgetys have owned the land for three generations, and are delighted that it will be protected this way. The land is on the south side of the Okuru River, to the east of the highway This land is a great example of open pakihi, a type of wetland characterised by low soil fertility, Ms Wagner said in a media release. The pakihi provides a perfect home for the declining South Island fernbird and supports several types of native plants, including sun orchids, carnivorous sundews and bladderworts. Both pakihi and the wetland and lowland forests which make up this land are under-represented in public ownership, so the acquisition is doubly welcome. What s the Nature Heritage Fund? The NHF is a contestable ministerial fund aimed at protecting the full range of New Zealand s natural ecosystems. The Fund has an annual budget of $1.8 million, the Fund s investment in the Okuru wetland area is just over $350,000. Since 1990 the Fund has protected more than 340,000 ha of natural areas which would have otherwise been cleared, logged or further damaged by introduced browsing animals. Want to know more? Call your local DOC office! 8

11 Fox Glacier SEPTEMBER 2015 THANKS FROM THE FOX GLACIER PLAYGROUP. Fox playgroup would like to thank everyone who bought raffle tickets and supported their fundraising efforts over the course of the 3 Sundays of great Woodham Shield rugby at Snarler Park. The winners of the raffles were week 1 - Choc cake and wine - Rowan Sullivan week 2 - Hamper of baking and wine etc - Richard Molloy - $100 note - Richard Bungeroth week 3 - $100 note - Shaun Monk Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to all who bought tickets and gave donations. Very much appreciated Community Centre Update The Community Centre is all set to go. Building consent was gained in June and the build is set to commence in early September! We will be creating a bund on the Pekanga side shortly and will be calling for volunteers to help with planting it out. Fox Inc upcoming meetings Next General Meeting 14 th September 2015 Next Committee Meeting 12 th October 2015 Everyone is encouraged and welcome to come to any Fox Inc meeting. Woodham Shield Well Fox, Franz, Haast might not have won the shield but the boys played some awesome Rugby, and you ve done South proud! Great to see all the community support for this great event too. The town has looked amazing dressed in Black & White over August, and we ll have another good crack at it next year. Well played Whataroa. Congratulations on the win until next year! Chalet Lookout Track As many of you would already be aware the Chalet Lookout Track has sustained a significant amount of damage to a large proportion of the track. Mills Creek watercourse is changing regularly, destroying large sections of the track and the unpredictable nature of the creek now prevents safe access. Instability in the headwaters of the Mills Creek catchment is causing the release of a huge amount of rock and gravels into the creek, resulting in unprecedented build-up in the bed of the creek. Consequently Mills Creek is frequently changing course, flowing through surrounding forested slopes and making access and new track formation, for the Gardening Spring is here, so if you haven t already, it s time to start thinking about preparing the garden beds and planting seeds, as the ground begins to thaw out. If it s still too cold outside, we can always start by planting seeds in containers inside until it warms up enough to get them in the ground. time being, impossible. The Chalet Lookout track will be closed indefinitely and until such time as either Mill s Creek settles down or we can successful survey and fund a new route both are unlikely in the short term. I am sorry to bring you this news as Chalet Lookout track is a wonderful local walk that has been increasingly popular for views of the glacier. We will do our best to look at alternative route options but it really is challenging given the level of instability in the Mills Creek catchment at the present time. If you have any questions or ideas please don t hesitate to give me a call. Kind regards, Wayne Costello Conservation Services Manager Department of Conservation, Okarito SEPTEMBER 2015 August - planting season, and after many years of envying Ross their cherry trees, Okarito Community pitched in with a plan to plant an orchard. Among the species, carefully selected by Mark and Annebell as heritage and suitable for our area, were several pears, apricot, blackboy peach, plums, apples and quince trees. All hands on deck saw the work done in less than an hour. And a little further along the campground boundary, equipment was arriving for our next big project, the renewal of the sewerage drainage field for our campground. We expect this to be operating by this summer. At the entrance to the village, gorse is being removed and a wetland being replanted with help from locals and volunteers, using stock from the Okarito nursery. Well done to everyone involved in all these projects. 11
