5 Haast DECEMBER 15 & JANUARY 16 Haast Happenings November We celebrated the fiaieth anniversary of opening the last secon of State Highway 6 between Haast and Paringa on the weekend 6-8 November. There was a great turn out from those involved in the making of the road. It was a chance for many to catch up on the past and present. There was a meet and greet on Friday evening with speeches, then a re-enactment of the opening at the Knights Point viewing area. An addional plaque was added to the memorial and a ribbon cut. potatoes and kumara. So tasty. This was followed by two pavlovas, then drinks and a very nice cake. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Since the last meal there have been several birthdays in September, so HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Roy Hutcheson on the 17th,Claire Hutcheson on the 23rd, and Gaynor Brown on the 29th. Then in October there was Di Solomon on the 11th,and Bill Kay/Smith on the 13th. Our next meal will be on the 18th November in the Haast Hall, where Colleen Anderson The rain held off at the speeches and ribbon cung has kindly donated some pork for us to enjoy. The Housie evenings have been going really well, with good afendances. In the 4th week, the winners were Dave Varcoe, and Molly Bowen. In the 5th week it was Bruce Horrell and Craig Flynn. The 6th week saw Robert Afan and Ken Hall winning. The 7th week was Steve McFarlane and Colleen Anderson.Colleen was kind enough to share hers with everybody. The 8th week saw Kerry McWhinney and Henry Pomana get the goodies. The 9th week we had Archie Cowan and Logan and Min enjoy the cakes, then last week(10th) Bloxhams took the first two, and Gaynor Brown the third. There is only one week to go for Housie, and we will be dressing this next lot up with a few extras seeing as how it is the end of the season,so tell your friends, and come along. Many vintage and veteran cars travelled south to join the celebraon Haast Allstars On the 21st of October we were invited to Neroli Nolan s lovely home for our monthly All Stars meal. With 11 people present it was nice to have Heleen back with us, and both our Prime nurses present as well. This was our first gathering since we had lost June Johnston, and it was also here that Ian Rendall had had his last oung. So we all observed a short silence for both of them. AAer that it was into the wonderful meal that Neroli had prepared for us. Thank you so much Neroli for all your me and effort and the lovely food. We had a beauful meal of grilled chicken pieces accompanied by a tasty yoghurt dressing, afended by four choices of salad, with cubed baked pm 5

6 Haast Police DECEMBER 15 & JANUARY 16 Hi, my name is Paul Gurney and I ve been given the privilege of taking over from Snr Constable Rob Manera at Haast and live in this great part of New Zealand. Rob has rered aaer 28 years in the Police. 18 years of those staoned at Haast. It will take me awhile to achieve the vast local knowledge that Rob has and work out how he had this staon running. Over the last week I ve met a lot of you and I am slowly sefling in. Some of you may remember me from being staoned at Franz Josef between 2007 and Since then I ve had afew years on the Chatham Islands and more recently in Greymouth. My partner Rachel and two girls Rata and Miro, will join me aaer school finishes for the year. From me to me I ll place an entry in this community paper lemng you know what s been happening Police wise down here. It appears the roads are busy here during the day with traffic and are only going to get busier this summer. I ve been advised to expect a lot more tourists and New Zealand travellers. Accordingly I ve been asked by my bosses to be on the road as much as possible. Keep lea as best you can. I ve afended two crashes here in the last week. Both for crossing the centreline and colliding with oncoming traffic. Take it easy on the road. You can t predict what s coming round the corner. Constable Paul Gurney Haast Police Bruce Bay DECEMBER 15 & JANUARY Bruce Bay Sports Day & Ball AAer some rain in the morning, this year s labour weekend Sunday turned out a beauful day for the annual Bruce Bay Sports Day. The wood chopping event had a record field and everyone had a fantasc me. The Gatsby-themed ball at night was a huge success. The Queenstown-based band Mojo enjoyed the night as much as the ball-goers did, and are keen to return next year. Everyone looked stunning in their 1920s oupits! Amongst other projects, the proceeds from the day are going towards the upgrade of our community hall. At the moment, we are replacing rofen weatherboards and windows in preparaon for a repaint of the hall s exterior. Thank you to everyone who came! See you again next year. 6

10 Ross DECEMBER 15 & JANUARY 16 Ross Ramblings Sff long dresses and and flowery hats mixed with lycra and helmets at the Ross Gold Rush 150 Celebraon on Labour weekend. The town celebrated both cycling wonders of today and gold discoveries of yesteryear. The community worked hard to pull everything together, the weather was great and the fireworks spectacular. Large numbers of cyclists bafled a bit of a headwind on the Saturday to make it to the West Coast Wilderness Trail opening in Ross, where they were greeted with sunshine, speeches and high tea sandwiches. On the Sunday costumes were out in force for the parade along with a beaufully maintained horse drawn carriage, pony trap, and fire engine. There was the band, dancing girls, miners and bonnet and cap wearing school children. Kids also got tradional games to play: three-legged races and tug-o-war. Another well afended event was a recent community meeng on the fight to keep a policeman in Ross. About 100 people available at the Ross shop if anyone from further south wants a copy a great way to get numbers for people that you can't so easily find in the West Coast phone book. Playgroup will have its always fantasc Christmas Party on Sunday Dec 20th at the Ross Swimming Pool. The me will be announced soon, but there will be a barbecue lunch and Fire Engine rides. If the usual Santa makes an appearance the grown ups can have fun seeing who is on to him despite a disncve accent, neighbouring children and grandchildren sll haven't worked out the game. If you're coming along please bring a plate and a small labelled gia for your children for Santa's sack. The Ross Pool complex is almost always warm enough inside to make you want to jump in the water. And the water is gemng warmer too. It was 24 degrees the other day and only gemng hofer, so enjoy the summer by gemng in a few laps. Contact Bev Manera for your key. afended the meeng at the Ross Hall on Tuesday 10 November. The decision on whether to replace the last Ross policeman has not yet been made, and you can have your say sll in the first week of December by contacng the inspector who carried out the review: jeffrey.penno@police.govt.nz. The school children having been busy this week wring lefers about why they think there should be a policeman in Ross. Buglaries and car accidents seem to feature high on the reasons there. The kids are right there was a run of fuel theas aaer the last policeman lea town. The school and playgroup teams have been doing a lot of fundraising lately, and the school has produced a new copy of the indespensible Ross phone book. These ought to be 10
