1 PRESIDENT S REPORT Dear Members, Thankyou to the Oatens: Thankyou to the Peter & Lorraine who transported all the paraphernalia, newsletters, etc to the August branch meeting. Marlene and I visited the Bendigo NSA branch the previous evening to conduct their AGM and we were concerned we might not make it to our meeting in time the next day. Peter & Lorraine do a excellent job on the Executive and I am so pleased they are renominating again this year. September AGM: As all members of our Executive and Committee have renominated for the 2016/17 year we will not be required to hold elections. I thank all members who have renominated and look forward to another successful year. Donations to our Charities: Cheques of $ each are to be presented at our September meeting to Liscome House, Leith Park (Old Colonists Association of Victoria) and Banksia Palliative Care Service. This money is raised through our monthly raffles and we thank members for their generosity. Yan Yean Reservoir/Whittlesea Courthouse Tour: A lovely sunny day began with a bus trip to Yan Yean Reservoir where we were meet by Ross who gave us a talk about the history of the Reservoir. Morning tea was served in the Caretaker s Cottage which was built in 1853 and provided the group an opportunity to see the many historical and informative displays. We then resumed our journey on the bus to the Whittlesea Courthouse which is the oldest functioning building in the region. The courthouse operated as a Court of Petty Sessions until It is now an Information Centre and run by local volunteers, one of whom provided a talk about the history of the courthouse. Following lunch at the local Bowling Club we stopped off at the Donnybrook Cheese Farm on the way home where many members replenished their cheese stocks. Greensborough Branch Newsletter Branch No Incorporation No. A A SEPTEMBER 2016 Xmas Dinner Dance Tuesday 13 December: Our theme this year is Roaring 20 s / Gangster Every year members come up with fantastic costumes and Marlene & I are looking forward to see what members come up with this year. As per last year, members will be able to book a table or part table and you can start to do this now. This worked well last year and alleviated the rush to get a seat when the venue doors opened. Lists will be provided at the entrance with names and table numbers. Please start putting down your names now with Peter & Lorraine, so that we can plan our tables, catering, decorations, etc. Regards, Bob Goodyear Shush.. quiet please We would appreciate it if members could please refrain from talking when the branch speaker is on stage relating his or her story & experiences. Other people may be interested to hear what is being said. There are ample opportunities to speak with friends prior to and after meeting, also during the break. 6 Tour North Eastern Victoria Holiday Lakes and High Country Have you recently visited Rutherglen, Yackandandah, Beechworth, Bright, Mt Beauty, Kiewa Valley, Dartmouth, Corryong, Mitta Mitta Valley to name a few (not necessarily in that order)? Well 55 members (spread over two groups) from 4 branches did exactly that during August and September and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Our home base was Tallangatta Motel and their very comfortable bus took us out each day to places of interest. Our drivers, Warren and Peter, were well informed and showed us areas of the High Country we would not have found on our own. The scenery was magnificent, so green and with snow on distant mountain ranges. A tour to the Murray 2 Power Station, an impressive hydroelectric and irrigation system of the Snowy Mountain Scheme highlighted how water and electricity is dispensed to surrounding areas. Museums which contained old carriages and tools used by farmers demonstrated how hard life was in those early days. The rivers, Hume Weir and Dartmouth Dam (that stores 6 times the water of Sydney Harbour) were nearly full due to recent rains. The motel management (well done Ellen and her staff) provided us with breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner each day no need to spend anything! We had tastings at Pfeiffer Winery and Murray Brewery. Lunch & afternoon teas at Yackandadah, Mt Beauty & Beechworth Bakeries and Café Borellas - yum, plus a smorgasbord dinner one evening at the Albury Commercial Club. How pretty is the scenery with the Ovens River in the background I asked for some action shots for the newsletter, so members decided to release their inner child while waiting for our morning cuppa at Porpunkah! Freda tries her hand at saddle making at the Beechworth Carriage Museum Group 1 photo - on the banks of Murray River, Howlong. Unfortunately I didn t have a photo of Group 2 prior to going to print, but may have one for the next newsletter. Page 6

7 NOTICE BOARD Are you planning to visit Thailand? Member, Marg Wood - Tel: , is a regular visitor to Thailand and would be happy to advise you on: The best shopping places. Where to buy tailor-made suits. Pitfalls for tourists. The wonderful, exciting experiences you can have. A must visit is to Kanchanaburi (the Thai Burma railway, the Bridge on the River Kwai, tigers living with monks, elephant rides & beautiful scenery). Do not pre-book a tour from Australia for Kanchanaburi - you can do so much better if you deal directly with a local travel agent. BOOK EXCHANGE & CRAFT BOOK EXCHANGE We operate a Free Book Exchange on Branch Meeting days. We ask only that you return the books to the Branch when you have finished reading them so that other members may have the opportunity to borrow the books. (Tables are set up at the rear of the function room.) Coordinators for this activity are: Ken Pickett Book Exchange Lois Williams Knitting/Craft Patterns Spectacles & Sunglasses Garden Workshop Bunnings Eltham The Fred Hollows Foundation uses second-hand spectacles and sunglasses to improve the sight of people in deprived communities in our Far North & Australian Islands. You can assist by bringing along no-longer-used specs/sunglasses. Cases for specs/sunglasses are also needed. Member, Lorraine Callow, will be happy to collect them at Branch meetings. Members are invited to attend the Bunnings Garden Workshop held in their Eltham store on 1st Thursday of the month at 10am noon. There is free morning tea. The topics are interesting and informative, with guest speakers and everyone has a lot of fun. Bookings are required, for catering purposes - please contact: Helen Philp, Activities Organiser Tel: Anyone for Tennis? If you are interested in playing social tennis in a very relaxed atmosphere on a Monday morning, between 9.30 am 12 noon, please see Glenda Sundstrom (Tel: ) or just turn up (weather permitting) at approx am for a game. The only criteria is that correct tennis shoes must be worn. Cost is $3.00 per morning (incl a cuppa & biscuit). The courts are located at the rear of the Diamond Valley Baptist Church, 309 Diamond Creek Road, Plenty (Melways 11D7). Banyule Men s Shed Do you know men with spare time and skills to share? Men who enjoy tinkering with tools or getting their hands dirty in the garden? Well, the Banyule Men s Shed is looking to recruit men to volunteer and be part of the shed. At the shed, you re free to work on your own projects or help others work on community projects. To get involved or find out more: Call or drop in any Monday pm Cnr St Hellier & Edwin Streets, Heidelberg Heights Page 7
