2 Editor s Corner September 2016 Page 2 We have just returned from the Custer, SD Labor Day show. While it rained on and off during the weekend, the sun came out on Sunday and another successful show went on. A big Thank You to the Dakota Chapter for organizing and putting on another great event. Local chapter members who won awards were, Perry Meyers Western Wheels, Jim Hill Conestoga, and Bruce Berst of the Wyoming Chapter. The Conestoga and Pikes Peak Chapters are getting together for a joint Drive Your Studebaker Day event. Information on this is in the newsletter. Don t forget to get your Studebaker out for a drive this Saturday. I ll be driving my 1963 Hawk up to Cheyenne. Joe has put a lot of work into this Hawk and picked an award with it at the car show in Ault, Colorado this summer.

3 Western Outlook September 2016 Page 3 CONESTOGA CHAPTER PRESIDENT S REPORT This week I finalized the purchase of memorial bricks at the National Studebaker Museum in South Bend, Indiana in memory of Jim and Shirley Zaner, and Bill and Gertie Davis. Each brick will be 8 square and will contain their names and Chapter(s). I want to thank the members of the Pikes Peak Section for contributing half of the funds for the brick for Jim and Shirley Zaner. And, I want to also thank our Conestoga members for their contributions towards the purchase of these very special memorials. Thirty members enjoyed a fine late summer cookout at Jim and Trish Harness s home in Littleton on Sunday, August 21st. Jim and Trish outdid themselves with hotdogs, hamburgers, wings, salads, relish trays, and great hospitality. Members who attended brought plenty of yummy side dishes and desserts. Our hosts, Jim and Trish, had their 1959 and 1963 Larks and their 1976 Avanti on display. Members attending with their Studebakers included Alan Esler (1961 Lark VI); Joe & Sheila Rink (1963 Avanti); John & Joan Murphy (1963 GT Hawk); Phil & Marilyn Scott (2002 Avanti); Dick Eichof (1941 Coupe); Ray & Catherine Petros (1963 Avanti); and Larry Ramsdell (1954 Conestoga). I want to extend a very hearty welcome to new members, Sandy & Terry Spitzer, who attended with their 1959 Studebaker Pickup. Sandy and Terry are a great addition to our Chapter, and we all look forward to seeing them at another event very soon! Other members who attended were Jim Klein & Jodee Studebaker; Joann Beldt, Jay & Deb Hokanson, Jim Hill & Virginia Stuart; Bob & Laura Fish; Rick Hawkins & Sue Bordwell; Roger Zaner; and Lori & Will Sander. Saturday, September 10th is International Drive Your Studebaker Day. Thanks to Chuck Donkle and the Pikes Peak Chapter, we have been afforded the opportunity to enjoy a fantastic day! We plan to meet at the Hotel Elegante in Colorado Springs starting at 9:00 am for donuts and coffee. We will depart the Hotel at 10:00 am to enjoy a tour of the Penrose Museum, and then on to Johnny Martin s Car Central (a private club) in downtown Colorado Springs for a buffet lunch. Base cost of the buffet lunch is $25. Members who attend will be responsible for the $25 base cost. The Conestoga Chapter will pay the tax and gratuity.this should be a very enjoyable event for both chapters. Please see the article elsewhere in this newsletter for more information. Sunday, October 23rd Tour master Jay Hokanson will take us Northeast to enjoy a leisurely tour of Historic Fort Lupton and South Platte Valley Settlement Historic Park. The area is encompassed by 97 acres of land along the South Platte River just northwest of the city of Fort Lupton. We will visit the 1875 Independence School, the 1860's Donelson House, and the reconstructed Fort Lupton (Originally Fort Lancaster), as well as the reconstructed fur trading post. We do plan to have lunch along the way. Details will be finalized and included in the October issue of The Western Outlook.

4 Western Outlook September 2016 Page 4 Conestoga Chapter I received an interesting from a gentleman by the name of Bill Abrams from Collegeville, PA who said that a few years back his nephew had found a set of 54 Studebaker keys in Big Bear, California and gave them to him. He explained that at the time, he had two Studebakers himself (a 53 Starlight Coupe and a 62 GT Hawk). He said he sure missed those cars and asked if I knew of anyone in the Studebaker club who would enjoy having the keys. He included a picture of the keys with his . Well, they were just too cool and I wrote back immediately and told him I d like to have the keys. I was really grateful that he sent them to me. I don t have a definite plan, but I hope to find a way to display them as a collectible item at home. So, I may not have a Studebaker yet but I have keys! It s not too early to start thinking about our Thanksgiving Potluck, which will be held Sunday November 13 th at the Forney; Our Holiday Dinner will be held Sunday, December 18 th at Cinzetti s. Jay and I have received some great input from members for ideas for events for We would love hearing from you if you have any ideas for events you think members would enjoy. Just let us know. 5 Western Outlook September 2016 Page 5 Saturday, September 10, 2016 The Conestoga Chapter will be joining the Pikes Peak Chapter for a joint International Drive your Studebaker Day event in Colorado Springs. Members will meet at the Hotel Elegante, 2886 S. Circle Drive, in Colorado Springs, at 9:00 am for coffee and sweets provided by the Pikes Peak Chapter. At 10:00 am, we will caravan to the Penrose Heritage Museum. There is no entry fee at the museum, and hopefully we can park our Studebakers together. The Penrose Museum has an extensive collection of horse-drawn and motorized vehicles, including three Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb race cars (circa 1920's). There are also two presidential carriages--an 1841 Williamsburg Brougham and an 1862 C-Spring Victoria. There is much to see and enjoy for everyone. After the tour of the museum, we will head to Johnny Martin s Car Central. Part automotive showcase and part luxury garage, Johnny Martin s is a private club that provides members an opportunity to enjoy rare and unique automobiles as well as exceptional food and drink. Pikes Peak Chapter member, Pete Tetley, is a member so he has arranged for our group enjoy this extraordinary opportunity. There are number of specialty cars situated around the tables, giving the appearance of a nightclub. A buffet lunch will be served. Base cost of the buffet lunch is $25. Members who attend will be responsible for the $25 base cost. The Conestoga Chapter will pay for the tax and gratuity. 6 Western Outlook September 2016 Page 6 PIKES PEAK STUDEBAKER CLUB I was not present at this meeting. So will just bring everyone up to date on upcoming meetings and dates. October 15th Studebaker Swap Meet, Kerman Stuart Memorial Chili Cook-off and meeting at Merv Mundorf's, Trail Boss Ct., Peyton, Colorado. 11am Host--Merv (719) Dust off those chili cookbooks, and heat up some yummy chili. Other potluck items welcome if you don't want to make chili. (Or just bring something that goes down good with chili--cuz we have some good chili cooks in our club). November 19th Pikes Peak Chapter Thanksgiving Dinner--Golden Corral at Palmer Park and Powers at 11:30 am. Hosts: Earl and Bonnie Chase (719) December 10th Pikes Peak Chapter Christmas Dinner, 11am at the Hotel Elegante. More details to follow. Drive to the Penrose Heritage Center, entry is free. At noon we all meet at Johnny Martin's Car Central Restaurant for lunch. This will be a buffet consisting of Salads, Burgers, Hot Dogs, Chicken Breast, Shrimp Skewers, Seasonal local fruits, Relish tray, Assorted Buns and Rolls and Fruit Cobbler for dessert. Cost is $25 a person. This is going to be great. You can only go to this restaurant if you are a member, and thanks to Pete Tetley, we will go as his guests. Just a reminder. 7 Western Outlook September 2016 Page 7 Wyoming Chapter President s Report Greetings everyone, As the year begins to wind down I would like to welcome our new members and encourage you all to try to attend one or both of our remaining meetings for this year. This goes for our not so new members as well. The next meeting will be held Saturday September 24th. This is our annual Fall Colors tour to drive our Studebakers and enjoy the changing fall colors. This year's Fall Colors will be in Laramie, WY are also inviting Colorado and South Dakota members to join us. If you are still receiving this newsletter and have not paid your dues I would ask that you consider doing this. The club membership has grown this year and I see good things ahead. Remember September 10th is DRIVE YOUR STUDEBAKER DAY. Happy Motoring Bruce Berst Wyoming Chapter Secretary Report Saturday September 3rd, Custer, South Dakota. The Wyoming Chapter held it's meeting. Called to order at 5:20. There were 10 members in attendance and Gloria & Milt Wester join us as guests. July minutes were read and approved. Treasurer's report was read and approved. OLD BUSINESS: A.) Dollar figures were given on the live and silent auctions from the Zone Meet. Everyone was pleased with the totals that only added to the success of the Zone Meet. B.) Note from Ellis Black on our sponsorship of a trophy for the Buffalo Show & Shine. Our trophy was awarded to a 1955 Chevy for 3rd Place. C.) Fall Colors Tour was again addressed. 1.) September 24th in Laramie, WY. 2.) The hosts are Rick Hawkins & Sue Bordwell RSVP to or hawk5619@aol.com 3.) We will gather at the Best Western in Laramie or ) We will be going to the Territorial Prison for a guided tour in addition to our Fall Colors tour to be announced. 5.) Paid members Saturday evening meal will be provided.

Please RSVP to them (307) by Oct 15th. We will meet at the Bozeman Trail Steak House in Buffalo at 12:30. E.) Jim Rapp mentioned that not all members are current on their dues and has sent letters as reminders. The letter also states that they will no longer receive the Western Outlook as of September. NEW BUSINESS: A.) Motion was made and seconded to present a donation to The National Historic Trails Center. Bruce will present the check to the Trails Center as the group's representative. B.) Rick Hawkins proposed the idea of having a group meeting in Colorado and taking in a Rockies game in He will look into costs and the Rockies schedule. We would also like to extend invitations to other chapters to increase the group number for perhaps better rates on tickets. C.) Bruce has been sent 6 tickets from the National Studebaker Museum for a raffle. Tickets are $50.00 each or 3 for $ If interested call Bruce (307) D.) Bruce has asked that a committee be appointed or volunteer to review the current By-Laws of the Wyoming Chapter to bring them up to date. Bruce Berst, Rick Hawkins, Jim Rapp and Brad Canfield have stepped up at this time. Brad is going to contact the Michiana Chapter as they have just completed revisions to their By-laws and may be of great assistance. Committee is hoping to have suggestions for the possible revisions by the 1st meeting in E.) A nominating committee will be appointed or volunteered at the Fall Colors tour meeting. Members need to be thinking of officers for the 2017 year. Elections will be held at our March 2017 meeting. No meetings for the Wyoming Chapter...November, December, January or February With no other business the meeting was adjourned by acclamation at 6:25 pm. Respectfully submitted Tammy Raver

Heather Gardens is easily reached exiting I225 at Iliff Ave, east to Blackhawk, then follow street north to Yale Ave, cross street at Heather Gardens entrance, right on Heather Gardens Way to clubhouse at 2888 S Heather Gardens Wy. Studebakers are always a big hit at this show.
