2 January 2015 Page 2 Editor s Corner Welcome to 2015! If you are like me, you start to ask yourself, Where did the years go? Speaking of years, you will notice on the front page with this Western Outlook, it is the start of Volume #50. That means this is the 50th year for the Western Outlook. I am sure there is another monthly news letter that has been around as long the Outlook, but I cannot think of one. Congratulations to all the former editors for keeping the Outlook going. This promises to be another great year for all chapters and the members that continue to support the Studebaker name. It has now been over 50 years since the last Studebaker was built at the South Bend plant. All of our cars are old and it is a challenge to keep them on the road. We must continue to get our cars out of the garage and in the public eye. Not only are the cars aging but so is the majority of the membership. It is getting harder to get on the garage floor and pull those rear brake drums or squeeze underneath the hood of a Hawk. One idea that was brought up at the Conestoga Thanksgiving meeting was the creation of a Resource List. This would be a list of any car-related businesses or suppliers, including sources for chrome plating, upholstery, carburetor rebuilding, tune-ups, brakes, exhaust, engine rebuilding, paint & body, etc., etc. These would be reliable shops with knowledge of Studebaker cars and trucks. I think this an excellent idea as there are not many shops with knowledge of our cars. Christof Kheim is putting together a list of reputable shops to pass on to the membership. If you can help with this project, please contact Christof or me. One of my resolutions this year is to put more miles on my Studebakers, and I hope all members will do the same. 3 Western Outlook January 2015 Page 3 Conestoga Chapter The end of December saw 40 Conestoga Folks gathered at The Old Neighborhood Restaurant in Arvada for our holiday dinner! Everyone enjoyed not just the food, but the wonderful company as well. Long-time Conestoga member, Marge Grauberger is opening her home in Windsor to host the Annual Chili Cook-Off the 25 th of this month. We hope to see lots of folks there to share in all the wonderful items prepared by fellow Club members. Now here we are in 2015 and what a great calendar of events we have planned for you! At the request of the membership, we ve outlined everything for the coming year so be sure and see the events and dates listed in the Tour Master s report. Another request was made several months ago for a Resource Guide for Conestoga members to utilize for the needs of their Studebakers, Avantis or other collector cars. This guide was to contain recommendations from Club members for repairs, parts, restoration, services, etc.; resources both locally and elsewhere. To date only two members have made any recommendations. There must be others of you with good experiences and quality services received, so one last time I m requesting you please take a few moments and share those contacts with me so we can put together a guide. Hopefully our other Western Outlook Chapters read my column as well as their own, because I want to start the New Year off with an invitation to all members of the neighboring chapters to please feel free to join us for any and all of our monthly events, tours or activities. We always welcome guests and enjoy seeing new faces, old friends, different Studebakers and regaling each other with our Studebaker stories. Until the 25 th, stay healthy and be safe! Studebakerly, Christof TourMaster Report: The Annual Conestoga Chili Cook-Off will once again be hosted by Marge Grauberger in Windsor. It will be Sunday, January 25 th at Noon at her home, 301 Pelican Cove. Despite Marge s desire to no longer host such a large group and since we were unable to find another host or location to hold the event, she was extremely gracious in offering to open her lovely home so the annual Conestoga tradition could continue. (Everyone please be thinking about an alternate location or consider opening your home for this event in 2016!) Anyone with questions regarding the Cook-Off may call Marge at In addition to those who plan to bring chili for the competition, please bring a salad, side dish or dessert to share. 1st, 2nd & 3rd prizes will be awarded for the chili. For those coming from the south who would like to caravan, plan to meet in the King Soopers parking lot at 104th & Washington (SE corner) at 10:15am. 5 Western Outlook January 2015 Page 5 PIKES PEAK CHAPTER The December meeting/christmas dinner was held on December 6th at the Hotel Elegante Hotel in Colorado Springs. Twenty-three members and one guest were in attendance, along with two little Christmas pixies, Katie and Caroline. It was a bright day filled with sunshine, but most Studes have been put away for the winter. After a delicious meal, the meeting was called to order by Fred Cappo, president who introduced our attending guests. The November minutes and treasurer's reports were approved and seconded by members. John Gusick gave a short report on CCCC in Roger's absence, and his wife Dee offered her help if anyone is having a problem concerning a Rebuilder title. She has gone through the steps. The election of officers for 2015 were approved and seconded by attending members with a show of hands. President--Fred Cappo Vice-President/Tour Master--Marsha White Secretary -- Trish Harness Treasurer--Jim Harness CCCC--Roger Zaner Award Plaques were presented to officers of The Hard Luck Award went to Marsha White. I don't think anyone could top her hard luck story. The Participation award (a member who is present and drives a Stude to most meetings) went to Merv Mundorf. Following the meeting a "White Elephant" gift exchange was held. This was fun for all, especially our "little guests", Katie and Caroline. Our next meeting will be on January 17th at the American Legion #5. This is our "Toy Fair". Bring your Stude toys, etc. It will be a potluck, starting at noon. Guys and gals, bring your favorite food item. Trish Harness is still working on the Garden of the Gods for our February annual "Sweetheart Brunch". March 28th will be our annual "Chili Cook-off" at the American Legion #5. Date was changed due to parking problems conflicting with St. Patrick's Day parade in the Springs. HOST: Pete Tetley Pikes Peak President Message Whenever someone in our chapter is giving help to others who are not as fortunate, I would like to recognize their service. David Foerch from Pikes Peak Chapter is heavily involved in such an effort with Soul Winner Ministries. David is responsible for gathering clothing for children, giving encouragement and providing financial support to people in his ministry. If you are able to help out in this endeavor or have grand kids who have outgrown their clothing and you are buying them new items, please consider turning over the old things to David so he can redistribute them into a good cause. 7 Western Outlook January 2015 Page 7 Western Wheels Chapter Don and Betty Steinwart hosted the Western Wheels Christmas dinner/meeting at their home. We were blessed with nice weather this year. In attendance were: Dallas & Lucille Whiting, Mary Miller, Wanda Mowry, Perry, Jackie and Corina Meyers, Stuart Tritt, Loren & Valerie Hoekema. New officers were elected for 2015 and fortunately for our small group the 2014 officers agreed to fill the slots for They are: Dallas Whiting, President; Mary Miller, Vice President; Stuart Tritt, Secretary; Perry Meyers, Treasurer and Betty Steinwart, Tour Master. The December meeting is the time of year club members donate non-perishable items to the local DOVE's (Domestic Violence Organization) and continuing in this spirit of giving the club voted to donate $ to a local couple who have serious health issues. Going forward to January...the January meeting will be held at El Charritos in Scottsbluff, February Valentine's Meeting hosted by Mary Miller, March meeting, hosted by Don & Betty Steinwart; April meeting by Loren & Valerie Hoekema and May meeting by Dallas & Lucille Whiting. After adjournment a "dexterity" activity took place...using a wood frame, two metal rods and metal ball to drop into a slot. None were too successful however Jackie Meyers bested the group. 8 Western Outlook January 2015 Page 8 Valve Cover Racing These Studebaker valve covers were made by members of the Pikes Peak SDC, Iris McBride and Dave Batchelor. The Florence, Colorado event takes place every May coinciding with the Abbey Car Show in Canon City. This makes it a three-day event. It is a lot of fun, and a nearby hotel has plenty of onsite parking for trailers, etc. Auto racing of different makes and models of cars is commonplace, but you can also compete with valve engine covers. Instead of tossing away or being put in a recycle bin, they can now be cleaned, polished and painted to compete in valve cover races. These races are similar to Pinewood Derby races made by cub and boy scouts. The racers are launched from the starting point of a 24-foot incline and first to cross the finish line wins. There are guidelines to be followed, relating to length, width, height and width. No engines, propulsion or moving weights are allowed, and 10 pounds is the maximum weight for a racer in all classes. Some wheels are made from skateboards, roller skates, computer disks, handmade aluminum and more. Some people really get into and spend a fortune. But for most, it is the fun. This sounds like so much fun, I just may have to make one of my own. We already have a couple of nasty, greasy looking Stude valve covers just lying in a box in the garage. Time will tell. New all-season radials, auxiliary electric fuel pump, water pump & thermostat and shock absorbers. Rebuilt radiator Runs & drives well; overdrive equipped $10, Rex President 396 ci and automatic transmission. It has a complete drive train with drive shaft and rear end bolted up. The floorboards look good but has had a section cut out at the front because of the transmission and needs to be replaced. The gas tank has been refurbished. The vehicle has all the parts to finish and the metal work is straight and there are no rust through anywhere on the vehicle. This vehicle will need a new interior but all gauges are present as is all the hardware and frames for the interior. All the hard work is done. Selling price is $3000 firm. Charlie
