2 April 2015 Page 2 Editor s Corner The Western Outlook is a little late this month as I have been out of town visiting family. After two weeks back east it is great to see some sun and warm weather. I have not included the Zone Meet Information page in this newsletter. I have gotten a lot of feedback that it is to small to read. The reason for this is that the Western Outlook is done with Microsoft Publisher and the original meet info page is in a PDF format and will not resize correctly, in either Landscape or Portrait, to fit correctly on a page. If anyone needs a Zone Meet Registration Form please contact me and I will it to you in PDF. In the latest issue of Turning Wheels, there is a whole page with the Zone Meet form on it. Also in this Western Outlook is the information on the annual Conestoga Chapter Mount Vernon Brunch. Please RSVP early if you are planning on attending. Rick Conestoga Meeting Schedule April 26th, Wild Animal Sanctuary Tour Keenesburg, CO May 17th, Conestoga Annual Birthday Brunch - Mount Vernon Country Club June 27th & 28th, Conestoga Member Zone Meet Preparation July 9th-12th, Conestoga Chapter hosted North Central SDC Zone Meet - Eaton, Colo. 3 Western Outlook April 2015 Page 3 CONESTOGA CHAPTER Welcome to Spring everyone! Although it is officially here, Mother Nature continues to give us touches of winter here and there. As is always the case with the weather here in Colorado, we can certainly see more of the white-stuff throughout this month and into April, but if we're lucky and it all done for the season finally allowing us to get our Studebakers out and about! For those who missed the March outing to the Olde Town Arvada Flour Mill, you missed a real neat event. We had a very nice turnout of 26 folks, 7 Studebakers: 1951 Champion; 1957 President; 1960 Lark; two 1961 Larks & a 1962 GT Hawk, 2 Avantis: 1987 & 2002 and one Packard: a 1958 Hawk! The tour of the Flour Mill was very interesting, followed by a nice Mexican lunch and then a lot of sweet treats just a block away at Scrumptious; homemade ice cream and lots of vintage-brand candy! Our upcoming events; Wildlife Sanctuary & Pepper Pod Restaurant April 26th, Annual Mount Vernon Country Club Brunch May 17th, should be wonderful and hopefully many of you will be able to attend. Speaking of upcoming events, reservations for our North-Central Zone Meet continue to come in at a steady pace and the Cobblestone Inn rooms in Eaton are filling up, so if you plan to attend this July 9th-12th, be sure and register soon! (See form elsewhere in the newsletter.) In closing, I would like to send out, on behalf of the entire Conestoga Club, best wishes and caring thoughts to two of our members who have been experiencing health issues lately; Marge Grauberger of Windsor and Roy Kile of Lakewood. May you feel better very soon and we hope to see you healthy and with us in the near future. -Christof On Sunday, April 26th, the Conestoga Chapter will be traveling to The Wild Animal Sanctuary (1946 County Road 53 in Keensburg, CO) after a lunch stop at the Pepper Pod Restaurant (530 Fir St. Hudson, CO). I would suggest comfort over fashion at least in footwear for the day. The Animal Sanctuary has a flat rate admission of $15 per person, no discounts available. There are over 350 animals of different types to see. If you would like more information you may check out there website wildanimalsanctuary.org. We will be caravanning to the restaurant. We will meet at the Forney Museum of Transportation (4303 Brighton Blvd. Denver, CO 80216) at 11:00 AM, departing to caravan promptly at 11:15. We plan to arrive at the Pepper Pod around Noon. Please RSVP to Rex Osborn at (303) or trirexo@yahoo.com no later than Friday, April 24th. Looking ahead to May 17, we will be having our annual Conestoga Chapter Birthday Celebration at Mount Vernon Country Club, Hosted by Ray and Catherine Petros. Please see the attached flyer in this month s newsletter. BE SURE TO RSVP EARLY!!!!

4 Western Outlook April 2015 Page 4 PIKES PEAK CHAPTER Sixteen members, two guests and two Studebakers were in attendance on another beautiful day in Colorado Springs. The meeting was called to order by President Fred Cappo. Treasurer's report, secretary's report were discussed, seconded and approved by members present. Vice President gave a rundown on future events. The April 11th Event will be a garage tour at the house of Jack and MariLee Thiel, 7180 Stinson Drive in the Springs. This will begin promptly at 10am. Jack has been collecting cars for over 12 years, has a Model A that he is making a travelling car. Great display room. This will be a very interesting experience. Bring cash/checks. After, lunch will be at Gunther Toody's (Woodman/Powers). Just a reminder. Collect items for Tessa, bring to meetings. They will be taken by Marsha/Fred to be distributed. A motion was made, seconded and approved by members present to renew the by-laws. After the bylaws are established, Chuck will have them grammatically corrected and up to date. Chuck gave a miniseminar on Studebaker watches he and his grandson discovered while antiqueing. They found a 1924 (9jewel), 1922 (19 jewel) and a 1925 (21 jewel). The '22 and '24 were found in Arizona. When Chuck took the back off the '22, they discovered a photo and note. Note read "mom gave me this for my wedding present-1926). Is the photo his mom or new bride? Photo had no writing on back. In the Classic car magazine (May '15) is an article titled "Studebaker's Last Man Standing". Interesting reading. A motion was made, seconded and approved by members present to purchase a brick to be placed in the Memorial Garden at the Studebaker Museum in South Bend, Indiana. It will be in honor of Jim and Shirley Zaner who have done so much to promote Studebakers and were active in club activities. Not only in the Pikes Peak Chapter, but other clubs also. Shirley will be missed. A motion was made, seconded and approved by members present to donate$25 (Trophy) to the Conestoga chapter for their upcoming zone meet. Our chili cook-off was another tasty event. Sides were also provided. Thanks to everyone who provided such great eats! Our chili cook-off winners were: 1st Place--Jackie Floren. 2nd Place--Lynne Hargis and 3rd place--chuck Donkle. Each received a trophy. The Abbey Car Show will be May 16th in Canon City. The club will meet at the intersection of Academy/115 at 7am--(Northeast corner of Safeway parking lot), car pool to Canon City and meet there at the Walmart at 8:30am. From there, the cars will head to the Abbey in a group in order to park together. Dave B. will provide soda, water and ice. Bring your own snacks or buy from the many food vendors there. Chuck Donkle brought Stude items to be auctioned off, proceeds to go to the Chapter treasury. The club benefited by $126. Many thanks to Chuck for his generosity. Enjoy Spring and all the beautiful spring flowers. Trish Harness

5 Western Outlook April 2015 Page 5 Pikes Peak Chili Cook Off Winners 1st Place-Jackie Floren, 2nd Place-Lynne Hargis and 3rd place-chuck Donkle Chuck s Studebaker Watches In May of 1902, Clement Studebaker Jr., along with his brother George and their uncle John Mohler Studebaker bought the financially troubled Columbus Watch Company and began moving it from Ohio to Indiana. They constructed a state-ofthe-art watch-making facility with such advanced features as sprinkling systems and huge fire-proofed walk-in vaults. The name became the South-Bend Watch Company. They would eventually build 71 different grades of watches in the 5 most popular sizes. It officially opened in March of The South-Bend watches represented a good value then and now, some just happen to be better than others. South Bend built many memorable as well as some fascinating little-known grades.
