It was good to see a lot of friends that we have come to know since being members of the SDC. It was also nice to put faces with names of club members that I have contact with during the year. The first day had a lot of rain but after that the sky was clear, and a good time was had by all. One of the highlights of the meet was listening to the Studebaker Band. Conestoga member, Glen Shull, has organized and led the band for many years. Glen is a true master of the trombone and his band leadership skills are unmatched. The SDC is grateful to have a guy like Glen, that volunteers his time and organizes the band for every International Meet. Great Job Glen! This Months Cover Car The Studebaker on this Month s cover is the 1947 Champion owned by Pikes Peak Members, Chuck & Karen Donkle. This picture was taken next to a mural in South Bend, Indiana while they were in South Bend for the International Meet. PIKES PEAK SDC CHAPTER MEMBER Norman "Norm" Gieseker May 30, May 20, 2017 Born in Lincoln, NE Resided in Colorado Springs, CO He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Mary Gieseker; his daughter, Karen Gieseker of Littleton, Colorado; his son, Patrick Gieseker of Denver, Colorado; and his sister, Mary Vesta Pumphrey of Bella Vista, Arkansas. Norm was a graduate of Lincoln High School and the University of Nebraska, both in Lincoln, Nebraska, and worked in government, academia, and the medical field as a personnel and business manager. In his words "I lived a good life!" A Memorial Service was held at 11:00AM, Friday, June 2, 2017 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2111 Carlton Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado In lieu of flowers, it has been requested that donations be made to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region in Colorado Springs, ( Abbot Lane, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80905

3 Western Outlook June 2017 Page 3 CONESTOGA CHAPTER PRESIDENT S REPORT Many thanks to Ray and Catherine Petros for another exceptional lunch at Mt. Vernon and meeting at their home. Thirty-one members attended our 49 th anniversary brunch there. Ray and Catherine commemorated the 55 th anniversary of the Avanti with an appropriately decorated cake. As a matter of fact, another anniversary was being celebrated Steve and Sandy Doerschlag were celebrating their 30 th Anniversary. Lots of anniversary celebrating, great food and hospitality was enjoyed by all. We had a productive members meeting in May. Several members who went to the SDC International Meet in South Bend came back with glowing stories of that event. Jay and I were sorry we missed that, and hope to attend next year. Steve Doerschlag said he is no longer working with the Board that facilitates the Eaton Days car show, scheduled for July 8 th this year. Differences about the number of cars allowed to participate and location are in question. In light of that, the Conestoga Chapter will not be participating in the Eaton Days car show this year. However, we have planned another event for July. On Saturday, July 15th, we will visit the Front Range Indoor Mercantile Flea Market, 1201 S. Sunset Street, in Longmont. Member Vicky Andrews is the proprietor of the Flea Market and has offered to host this event. Look for more details on our Events page in this Newsletter. The Zone Meet is coming up soon (August 3-5). Pikes Peak Section members have put a great deal of effort into planning an exceptional meet, so you will want to attend and get your reservations in soon. Pikes Peak members will be putting together about 60 swag bags for attendees. If you have a business or know of anyone who can donate some swag for about 60 bags, and/or if you have an item you d like to donate for the silent auction, let me know at dhokan@comcast.net. In other Chapter business, we voted to hold our Thanksgiving Potluck at the Forney Museum again this year on Sunday, November 12 th. Because the holidays start getting so hectic after Thanksgiving, and since it s difficult to find an appropriate Holiday dinner location, Chapter members at the meeting voted not to have our Holiday dinner in December this year. Instead, we will have our Chapter Holiday After Party in January, Our Dinner committee members are looking into locations and will set a date soon. This will move our annual Chili Cook-off to February. Members voted to have the Chili cook-off at the Kendrick Cottage at Crestview Park again next year. Our next event is our June 18 th Father s Day trip to the Leanin Tree Museum and Sculpture Garden in Boulder. 5 Western Outlook June 2017 Page 5 Pikes Peak Chapter This has been a busy month for the Pikes Peak Studebaker Chapter. Our zone committee has been meeting monthly and it is coming along nicely. All arrangements, etc. getting completed. We still need items for the gift bags and also items for the Silent Auction. Hit your banks, insurance carriers, tire stores, auto repair shops, etc to see if they could donate some items for the gift bags. Check your closets, garages, and attics for anything in good shape we can auction off. Next meeting for the committee will be at the Visitors Center will be on June 14 at 11 am. The Florence Car show on May 21 was a fun day. The weather was perfect and there were lots of cars in the show. Nine members and 2 guests were in attendance with 3 Studebakers in the show. A great breakfast was served at 2 Sisters Café, then on to the Valve Cover Races. Iris, Dave B., Dee and John Glusick and Priska all raced their valve covers. Dave, Dee and John all made it to the second round. Finally, Dave Batchelor tied for 4th and John came in third. What a lot of fun to watch. A short meeting was held. After that we all went out to see all the beautiful cars and hit all the antique shops. Alas, none of the club members took home any of the big raffle prizes. June 17--we will do a Studebaker cruise to Santa's Workshop. Meet at the Hobby Lobby, 525 8th St, Colo. Spgs. at 9 am. We will drive to the North Pole, and have lunch in the area (at the Vines). Then cruise back to Hobby Lobby. Great time to bring family and grandkids, fun for all. Hosts--Chuck & Karen Donkle (719) to RSVP. July 15th--pending August 3rd to 5th is the Zone Meet. September 9th is Drive Your Studebaker Day. We will celebrate with a cruise to Victor and Cripple Creek. Meet at Hobby Lobby, 525 8th St., Colo. Spgs. at 9 am to drive to Cripple Creek. Dave has set up lunch and a melodrama at Butte Theater in Cripple Creek. If you wish to spend the night in Victor at the Victor Hotel, call the hotel now to set up a reservation for the night. Very important to RSVP soon to Dave to set the number of reservations for the melodrama and for preferred parking that we will be getting. Dave Batchelor/Iris McBride (719) Lastly and sadly, one of longtime members, Norm Gieseker passed away on May 20th. He will be missed greatly. He was a past officer for many years, was an asset to the club. Many thanks to Marsha White for putting together this article for the Western Outlook, with a few additions from me. 8 Western Outlook June 2017 Page 8 Western Wheels Chapter On May 2nd. Earl & Becky Johnson, Mary Miller and Stuart Tritt left for South Bend to attend the Int'l Studebaker Meet. The SDC board voted to cut the meet a couple of days. We arrived on Wednesday May 3rd. The final registration count was over 900. Over 200 cars were judged with many more on display. It is always nice to renew old friendships and meet many new people. Visited with several from Colorado, South Dakota and Eastern Nebraska. The ladies luncheon was very nice and the program was on "Women in Studebaker" and how a couple of the ladies worked in designing different models. A Special Thanks to Glen Shull for directing the Studebaker Band. The music was very enjoyable, with the band preforming at three different events. I attended the Chapter Officers meeting. The big question is getting younger people involved in our club. One suggestion would be to get the high school age or college students who take auto related classes and have them help judge at car shows. On May 20th. Meyers, Whitings, Johnsons and M Miller drove our Studies to Twin City Auto for their annual car show and BBQ. We had a cruise to the Scottsbluff National Monument. You had to keep a close eye out to answer the "Fun Run" questions. When we returned from the run, names were drawn and door prizes were handed out. I received a call that Ed Taylor has moved to Holiday Hills Retirement Center 2620 Holiday Lane Apt#237 Rapid City, South Dakota June 16th and 17th, Fathers Day Car Show in Gering. Fun Time!! July 15th. Morrill Days - Parade at 11am Car Show Food Vendors. Call Dallas for more info. We have Scottsbluff County Fair Parade coming up the end of July. Betty will be calling. The Wyoming Chapter had a Wonderful time and Christof's assistant was a well informed tour guide. For anyone that has never visited this museum, take an hour or two to go through this wonderful tribute to transportation of all means. It is FINALLY here----car Season, THANK GOD!!! 10 Western Outlook June 2017 Page 10 Wyoming Chapter The May meeting of the Wyoming Chapter, SDC was held at 3750 Chestnut Place in Denver, CO. Called to order at 4:59 pm. The secretary's minutes were read and approved. Treasurer's report was read and approved with on outstanding check for $73.60 to the Forney Museum for admission. OLD BUSINESS: 1.) Wyoming license plate law regarding classic/custom vehicles: Wyoming Governor Matt Mead signed a SEMA-drafted bill stating that vehicles that were "Originally manufactured without an installed bracket, device or other mean to display and secure a front license plate" The new law also specifically allows antique vehicle to display a single plate an allows all custom vehicles, not just those manufactured prior to 1968, to display a single plate. The new law was put into effect July 1, ) The vote on the proposed By-Law changes need to be cast in Absentee if you will be unable to attend the June meeting. June's meeting is scheduled for the 10th in Douglas, Wy. at the Knights Kruise car show. Vice President, Rick Hawkins will be contacting members that we have not heard from or members can call him at to cast your votes. 3.) Treasurer's request for an audit of his books has been penciled in for our July meeting. NEW BUSINESS: 1.) The year's monthly meetings and activities have been sent to Turning Wheels. 2.) Some restoration work has been completed and most parts are there but it s more work than I have time for. I have some extra parts but believe it needs the radiator and gas tank caps and two dash gauges. Bumpers were re-chromed but are not installed. The engine and drive train is complete and was running early in the restoration process and should be okay. Asking $6,000 OBO Vehicle is located in Woodland Park, CO.
