Telegraph Creek Preserve 1730 acres northeast corner of the county Nomination 236, 412 Planning the connector trail to Bob Janes Preserve and parking area Exotic plant treatments continue 1 hog was trapped in May Stewardship Plan Status: Approved by BOCC 04/19/11 SOUTH CENTRAL LEE COUNTY AREA San Carlos Bay-Bunche Beach Preserve 704 acres south of Summerlin Rd. east of Sanibel Causeway Nomination 59 Bird Patrol (volunteer group) conducts monthly bird walks April: FGCU Prof. David Green brought his Civic Engagement class for this semester to the salt flats of Bunche and cleaned up an estimated 500 pounds of 1960 s era carpet, bottles, glass, cans and various engine parts. FGCU Prof. Sasha Wohlpart brings her environmental class every semester for a beach walk and sustainability tour. Lee County Volunteers were treated to a guided kayak tour of a newly opened mangrove tunnel as a reward for cleaning the beach and helping in exotic plant control. KLCB held the Great American Clean up with Bunche as one of many collecting sites. Treatment of units 4 & 5 for exotic pest plants has been completed. June: World s Oceans Day was held in partnership with Keep Lee County Beautiful, Wa Ka Hatchee Day Camp and Lee County Parks and Recreation. 34 teen campers help clean the beach, dip net for sea creatures, learning the proper method and learning the importance of habitat, and birding with expert birder Charlie Ewell. Thursday will be the 5 th of July Clean Up at Bunche and we are gearing up for International Coastal Clean Up. The beach at Bunche has changed greatly due to Tropical Storm Debby and we believe only one turtle nest survived -but this maybe too soon to tell. A lot of sand was pushed up to the dune area and time will tell how the Page 4 of 7
29 mud flats faired with all the sand and wave action. New pilings and concrete have become exposed with the wave action as well as the old shell road. Several of the neighbors are not happy with the fence. Deep Lagoon Preserve 272 acres Preserve spans from Deep Lagoon south to Gladiolus Nominations 77, 78, 116, Well monitoring for pasture restoration continues Workdays spraying exotics of Willems Road (staff and a volunteer) Collected trash and monofilament line on the 116 peninsula Stewardship Plan Status: Approved by BOCC in 6/28/05. Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve 296 acres C20/20 Preserve near the Six Mile Slough Nominations 53, 69, 216, 239-2, 298, 347, 348, 360 Staff and consultants are investigating the use of Site 239 for mitigation needs for the Port Authority Working with FDOT and their consultants to regain access to and 439 Contractors kill remaining melaleuca and resprouts from cut stumps. Completed fencing the properties. 53,347,348, and 53 staff treated cogon grass. 69 retreated upland portions, Natural Resources did the wetland areas. Saw Black Bellied whistling Ducks, a new species for the Slough. 239 and 347 worked with Cathy to get access from SR access completed, 239 access guard rain and fence removed. Stewardship Plan Status: Approved by BOCC Six Mile Cypress Slough North Preserve 1219 acres C20/20 Preserve north of Six Mile Slough Nominations 390, 410, 422 Learning and recording species on the preserve Boundary signs still need to be installed A $300,000 was written and awarded for 6 Mile Cypress Slough Preserve North Brazilian pepper along the boundaries and ditches is being removed A neighbor dug ditches on the preserve and we are now dealing with the compliance people at SFWMD Stewardship Plan Status: Field work is in process Page 5 of 7
30 Matanzas Pass Preserve 1.05 acres C20/20 Preserves adjacent to Matanzas Pass Preserve Nominations 283 & 284 June/July: Earth Education programs Home Sweet Home and Magic Spots (developed by the Friends of Matanzas Pass Preserve) hosted a total of eight classes from Fort Myers Beach, Harlem Heights and Bonita Springs Elementary Schools on the 2020 site last school year and are in the process of contacting schools for this year. The new program, Magic Spots is sure to bring more students to the 2020 area of the preserve. June/July: Exotic pest plants continue to be treated on the site with Brazilian pepper the plant of the month. Stewardship Plan Status: Approved by BOCC 05/02/06. SOUTHEAST LEE COUNTY AREA Gator Hole Preserve 175 acres north of Corkscrew Rd., approximately 3 miles east of I-75 Nomination 62 Gopher tortoise relocation planning continues (with Public Works staff) Fire lines are being prepped Stewardship Plan Status: Approved by BOCC 05/30/06. Wild Turkey Strand Preserve 3,137 acres north of Alico Rd. to S.R. 82 Nominations 90, 200, 345 Construction for the facilities (funded through FCT grant) is almost complete Staff and consultants are investigating the use of portions of site 200 and 345 for mitigation needs for the Port Authority Mowed interior trails and fire lines Staff has begun preliminary talks with Audubon, who wants to provide funding for pasture restoration Stewardship Plan Status: 1 st edition: Approved by BOCC 06/28/05. 2 nd edition: Approved by BOCC 08/10/10.
