3 Cabin Fever Campaign Members Birthdays Unveiled at our November meeting, the bricks saved during the chimney restoration have been decoupaged with a photo of the cabin on the front and a brief history on the back. They will be for sale for $45 at the Jingle Bell Jumble and Bake Sale on December 5th, or call Anne Aspinwall to get one earlier. The few remaining miniature cabins will also be for sale for $100. Also for a very limited time, the wooden shingles which will be the new roof of the Tea Cabin will be available to sign either with your name, a memorial or some interesting quote. These are available for a donation of $100. Call Janis Rodriguez at to reserve your shingle. We can come to you for the signature. November Membership Meeting Lee Dillard created the beautiful fall bounty centerpiece that welcomed our members and guests. We had 51 Actives, 4 Associates and 4 guests attend the meeting. Faye Cowart, an Interpretive Ranger from Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation shared with us some wonderful behind the scenes stories about the owners of the Plantation. She invited us to visit Hofwyl for their Christmas event on December 4th or 5th at 6 p.m. Many thanks to Sue Chambless and her team of Martha Armstrong, Anne Aspinwall, Nancy Harper, Dianne Abernethy, Molly Macaulay and Becky Stephenson for the tasty refreshments. Image!om commons.wikimedia.org Narcissus The most commonly referenced birth flower for December is the narcissus, a native of the Mediterranean where it blooms from October to Spring near rivers and lakes. Greek legend states that the flower was created by the gods in memory of a handsome young man named Narcissus who fell in love with his reflection in a stream and starved there while admiring himself. Interestingly, today the birth flower narcissus symbolizes modesty and respect. 5 From the President Field Trip! Howfyl-Broadfield Historic Plantation Thursday, January 28th, 2016 at 10:00 am Join us for a two hour ranger guided tour of the pre-civil war Hofwyl Broadfield Plantation located in Glynn County on Hwy 17 North. The tour will include the inside of the plantation house as well as the grounds. Experience the history and stories of the original rice plantation settlement in the early 1800 s through the post-civil war era and its eventual development into a large dairy farm. The plantation was owned and managed by family descendants until being willed to the state of Georgia in 1973 by the last surviving family member at the time of her death. Many camellia trees on the property should be in bloom during this tour timeframe. After the tour a pre-selected lunch will be served at the Brunswick County Club. Meet at Hofwyl Plantation on: Thursday, January 28, AM - $20 (admission and lunch) Sign-up sheets will be available at each Cassina monthly meeting with reservations requested and $20 submitted by January 15, Please make checks payable to Cassina Garden Club. Contact Susie Salvatore at with any questions. Whee! Don t look too closely at the photo or you will notice that the skier is noticeably younger than now. Also her ski clothing has a definite 1980s look, not to mention that she s not wearing a helmet! You can count on my wearing a helmet this month skiing with my Colorado grandsons -- on the bunny slopes! Before we scatter hither and yon, our Annual Christmas Bake Sale (best in the Southeast!) and Jingle Bells Jumble Sale are taking place at the cabins on December 5. We ll have a beautiful new tent to protect the merchandise from any cold winds or rain, and I m planning to get a fire going in the outdoor fire pit, which was donated last year for Cabin Fever Weekend thanks to Yolanda O Hern s efforts. The fire and hot cider ought to keep us warmed up, regardless of the weather. If you have not already signed up to bake or make something yummy for the Bake Sale, let June Brown know and bring your goodies to the Meeting Cabin between the hours of 2:00 and 5:00 on Friday, December 4. June reports that over $200 worth was pre-sold at the November meeting, so we have a head start! Jane Bangert and Gee Gee Adams have rounded up folks to gather greens and fashion gorgeous decorations during the week before the event, but there is still time to volunteer your services. Definitely bring your checkbook because there will be beautiful things to buy. Also, make sure you spread the word among your friends to come join our free Christmas celebration at the cabins! Our January meeting program will use the roundtable format, similar to the special called meeting last February at the church. Be thinking in advance of what kind of programs, field trips and workshops you would like to have in the next few years and bring contact information for speakers or locations, if you have any. It is important that your voice and your ideas be heard. I hope that all of you have exciting plans for your Christmas holidays and that you and your family will be safe and warm together, wherever you are. We are so blessed! Dottie 5
6 Reserve Your Shingle Before Its Too Late In December, Cassina members have the opportunity to sign one of the wooden shingles that will be going on the Tea Cabin roof. For a donation of $100, members may sign and date a shingle that will become a time capsule of the cabin s history. Many members have already signed up to be part of this exciting opportunity. As mentioned in the November newsletter, Cassius Murphy, Neptune Small s son-in-law signed a shingle that was found last year on the Keeper s House during the restoration of the dwelling at the lighthouse. It was dated 1908! Cassius was a millworker at the St. Simons Mills located on Hamilton Plantation property after the Civil War. The shingle project was approved by the Cassina Board and will be available to the St. Simons community as well as Cassina members. All the shingle donations will go to fund the purchase of the wooden shingles for the roof. The shingles are being made and shipped to the cabins the first week in December. We hope to have them available for the Christmas Bake Sale and Jumble. You may send your check for $100 donation made out to Cassina Garden Club to Janis Rodriguez to reserve a shingle. Please mark for shingle on your check. Janis will contact you when the shingles arrive. Many members have already reserved their shingle. Don t miss this opportunity to be part of the Tea Cabin s history. Once the shingles arrive Landmark Preservation will start re-roofing the Tea Cabin. Be sure to come by the Cabins to see the new roof and repairs to the chimney. When this phase is completed, the exterior restoration on the Tea cabin will be finished. The next phase of the restoration will be the interior walls and floor. Any questions, please contact Janis Rodriguez by Janisemr@aol.com or November Meeting Photo Left: Lee Dillard, Jennifer Wilcoxon, Martha Mooney, Lee Baxter Right: Brenda Davis, Anne Aspinwall, Janice Brinkley, Sue Chambless Signing Up Right: Sandy Fitzgerald, Jan Campbell, Louise Grady, Becky Yelverton Left: Faye Cowart (speaker), Jeanne Earle McConnell 6
7 Daffodil Planting December 8th On Tuesday, December 8, beginning at 9:00 we will be meeting at the Cabins to have our annual planting to enlarge the lovely field of daffodils. This is the sixth year that we have participated in the National Garden Club Golden Days. The Golden Days project begins in the late fall when we plant the bulbs. This year we have 300 bulbs to plant. We will have water and ice tea to refresh us. We enjoy the fruits of our labor in March or April when we see the beautiful golden glow. We then harvest the beautiful flowers and deliver them in a simple bouquet to some of our members who are no longer able to participate in gardening activities with the club. After reading the thank you notes, it made me realize how important this activity is for our club. Please bring planting tools, especially hole diggers, if you have one. We will need volunteers to water the bulbs later in case we have a dry winter and early spring. Please call Bobbie Mohlman at (407) for questions. We hope to see a good turnout. The more we have, the quicker the work! Cottage Flowers Field Trip THE CASSINA THYMES The Cassina Thymes is published 10 times a year and is distributed to members around the 1st of the month via and also by regular mail for those who request it. Articles must be submitted by the 20th of the month preceding the publication month. Please submit photos and articles to the Newsletter Editor: Carol Cudahy cwcdesign@me.com 7
