Registration is now open for the 2015 Pennsylvania Statewide Conference on Heritage, to be held July 8-10 in Harrisburg. Bring your modernist mojo -- since this year we re celebrating the 50th anniversary of the State Museum & Archives! The conference offers great networking opportunities, insightful training sessions, workshops, tours, the hall of exhibitors, and engaging panel discussions, including one featuring special guest PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards. The 2015 conference is sponsored by Preservation Pennsylvania, with PHMC, PennDOT, DCNR, and local partners and is widely attended by heritage enthusiasts, students, and professionals in the fields of planning, preservation, transportation, community development, public history, heritage consulting, architecture, archaeology, real estate, and more. We're planning a weekend of fun and odd-jobs June You can bring your work gloves and pitch in to help spruce up the property on Saturday, or simply stop by to enjoy the other planned activities, such as a daytime picnic with vintage games and a storytelling bonfire in the evening. See all the details on our website, under the Saving Places/Events tab. Come for the weekend... Six cottages are still available. Reserve one on our website; your check-in fee will help pay for supplies for our work day on Saturday. 3 At April 30th's public meeting about the redesign of Philadelphia's JFK Plaza (LOVE Park), it was announced that the mid-century "saucer" that now serves as the Fairmount Park Welcome Center would remain as part of the park's design. The debate about the saucer's future highlighted many of the issues connected to preservation of mid-century structures: the lack of "charm" of aging modern building materials, the public's difficulty appreciating in-their-lifetime construction, a developing ranking system with which to evaluate "importance" of individual buildings or architects, and so on. (A session at the Statewide Conference on Heritage will explore these issues as part of a discussion on talking about preservation with non-preservationists.) Preservation Pennsylvania attended and live-streamed the meeting to allow interested parties to attend virtually. For more about saving the saucer, read Ashley Hahn's PlanPhilly article, "Designers Show Saucer Some LOVE" At Risk: History Happened Here From the photograph of the Jackson Rooming House (1006 North 6th Street, Harrisburg) at right, you can tell urgent intervention is needed or we'll lose this historic structure. Built in 1884, this building is highly significant in as the home of German Jackson, an African- American who worked as head doorman at the Penn Harris Hotel. In the era of segregation, when blacks were not welcome in Harrisburg s hotels, notable visitors including Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong stayed here instead. Preservation Pennsylvania hired a structural engineer to conduct an assessment of the property, which has suffered extensive interior collapse. The determination was that rehab is technically feasible, but will be costly relative to local market values. Gettysburg: From Spindle to Soffit Our April Architectural Styles Training in Gettysburg was a hit! A small group participated in the workshop, hosted by the Gettysburg Historic Architectural Review Board (HARB), which included both sidewalk field sessions as well as presentations and group discussions. The session provided four hours of training for 30 people from 8 different Historic and Architectural Review Boards. Bryan Van Sweden, who is the Community Preservation Coordinator for the Susquehanna Region Bureau for Historic Preservation Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission, made a presentation of typical architectural styles found in southcentral Pennsylvania using regional examples. He then led a walk through the historic district, where members were able to see a variety of buildings and put their new knowledge to use. After the walking tour, Preservation Pennsylvania s Executive Director Mindy Crawford led a lively discussion in which participants were challenged to look at photos of buildings and correctly identify architectural styles and features. Prizes were awarded to correct answers! By the end of the evening, participants were eager to use what they learned to identify building styles in their own communities.
