An outcome of the meeting is the creation of a Yahoo! Discussion Group, a web-based location for information on the discussions and recommendations of the SPC. Interested society members are invited to participate in the group, and stay informed as the strategic planning effort moves forward. Members of the discussion group can actively participate or simply read its content. 4 Time to Volunteer for POE Additional Chairs Needed Our spring show, The Pacific Orchid Exposition is rapidly approacing, and when you read this there will be little over a month till opening.this year's theme Natural Wonders should put the focus on our plants as the quintessence of natural beauty. But what will truly guarantee a lovely and successful show, will be the army of volunteers that make it all possible. The weekend is the culmination a year of planning and work, but the work we, as members, expend during that weekend is essential to growing and maintaining our Society. It takes hundreds and hundreds of hours of volunteer time to assure a well run show, and although we call on every society in the area to help, it behooves us to devote the most time. So I am encouraging every one of you to call one or more of the chairs listed in this month's newsletter and sign up for several shifts throughout the show's run. We want attendees to be blown away not just by the loveliness of the orchids they see, but by the people they come in contact with.the more of you that devote time, the more pleasant the show will be for all involved. Because of the past economic problems, we have suffered a loss of attendance and a loss of profits over the last few years. We must assure that attendees have a great time, and spread the word so we can begin building up our attendance again. Towards this end I hope you will all volunteer, and encourage friends, neighbors and coworkers to indulge themselves in the beauty of Natural Wonders! I look forward to seeing all of you there. Dennis Westler, Chair, Pacific Orchid Exposition Change of address? Send all address and changes to: Judy Bley / Membership Chairperson jabley@pacbell.net SFOS Membership P.O. Box 27145, San Francisco, CA For various reasons, a few of our long term committee chairs will be unable to assume their responsibilities this year, and so I am appealing to those of you who have served on these committees or who are willing to increase the level of their participation. We need a new chair for the Ticket Sales committee, as Mark, our long time chair is unable to commit the time thiis year. He has developed excellent procedures, and this committee has run flawlessly in the past few years.we have his volunteer list from last year, and he will be available for short periods to assist during the show, and certainly to consult prior to the show. Jonathan Chang, our Credentials chair will not be able to be present this year for the entire show, and so is in need of a co-chair to take responsibility during those days when he cannot attend.this is a key committee, as all volunteers and a number of VIP's must pass through the credentials room to gain admission. It is a great way meet many of the members of the society that you might not otherwise meet, and it can be lots of fun for an outgoing person. We also need a new chair for the Hospitality committee. This committee deals with vendors and volunteers in the sales area of the show, distributing sales dots, glasses at preview, and meal tickets at preview for vendors. It is a small committee with well defined duties, but is important to keep the vendors happy and the sales area running smoothly. We also will need several volunteers for a new feature of our show. We are going to be having a wine tasting area throughout the weekend in the area above the food concessions, and need several people to pour. These should ideally be people who are outgoing and know something about wine so as to interact with those who attend the tasting. If you are interested in any of these positions, please contact me at the Phone number or (preferably) the address listed below. Thank you! And I look forward to seeing you all at the show this March! Dennis Westler (415) denniswestler@aol.com 4 SFOS NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2011

6 Note: We will be a new location near the front of the vendor sales area so look for us in that area! Information for SFOS Members Who Want to Sell Plants at POE 2011: 1. Each SFOS member will be permitted to have 100 plants only in the Member Plant Sales area at a time. That means that as your individual plants are sold, you can bring in more. Each night I will make a tally of those plants sold and make that information available to anyone who wants to call me about it. 2. Place a label on each plant and make 2 inventory sheets-one for your records and one to give to the chair/sales staff for record keeping. 3. Labels must be legible and that includes the price. Member codes will be 3 letters followed by 1 to 3 numbers. At the time of check-in, your chosen letter code will be checked to insure that there are no duplicate codes. Before being placed on the sales table, plants must be checked in by a SFOS Member Plant Sales volunteer. The volunteer staff is responsible for removing any plants that are diseased or not established. A good rule of thumb is, if you would like to buy the plant, then it is good to sell to someone else. 4. Plants can be checked in for sale starting Thursday morning March 3 from 10 AM until 6PM. Unless your plants are checked in by a member of the POE Member Plant Sales committee, they will not be sold. Please do not leave your plants without official checkin. 5. The San Francisco Orchid Society will assume a 25% commission for the sale of plants at the table. 6. Each person bringing plants to sell must work at the plant sales table for at least 3 hours-it doesn't have to be all at one time. And remember when you work at the sales area, your purpose is to sell EVERYONE's plants, not just one's own plants. Anyone who attempts to sell his or her individual plants without going through the show plant sales procedure will be asked to leave the area with their plants. No side deals! 7. Each member who brings in plants is completely responsible for any loss to his or her plants. In other words, we do out best to promote and sell plants and to safeguard them from loss, theft or damage. But it happens. 8. Plants can be removed from the plant sales area on Sunday beginning at 15 minutes before the close of the show. Any exception to this must be cleared with the chair or co-chair of the Member Plant Sales area. 9. There will be no 'saving' plants [removing plants from the general sales table] for anyone other than those folks who are working in the plant sales area at the time of their shift. 6 SFOS NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2011 POE 2011 Member Plant Sales 10. No plants will be sold at the Member Plant Sales area BEFORE 4 PM on Thursday March 3. There will be no exceptions. Sales at that time, before the opening of the show, will be for exact amount cash or check only. Volunteers are needed for all shifts on all days especially Friday all day, Saturday all day, and Sunday AM! It will be first come, first served for volunteers for Preview Night until all shifts are filled. You don't have to be selling your own plants in the Sales area to volunteer here. It is a really neat place to talk about orchids with people and find some of your own treasures. Signup sheets will be available at the February SFOS meeting or contact me at czoltowski@sbcglobal.net or Carol Zoltowski Member Plant Sales Co-Chair The Challenges of Ex Situ Orchid Conservation Abstract text by Mark Sullivan Left photo: Paphiopedilum spicerianum photo by Gordon Kenyon Right photo: Paphiopedilum spicerianum Monster photo & grown by Ramon de los Santos One goal of ex situ orchid conservation is to save a species ex situ as it disappears in situ.a further, though unrealistic goal for many species, is to reintroduce the species back into the wild. I say unrealistic because the underlying reasons for species extinction in the wild need to be addressed before a successful reintroduction can happen. Ex situ conservation boils down to saving genetic information and diversity. Two main challenges are faced genomic extinction through hybridization and selective breeding of species to get human desired traits in species. The article goes on define what is being done and what can be done by orchid societies and individuals to effectively participate in ex situ conservation. * The San Francisco Orchid Society will have several copies of this article available for those that do not have Internet access.

7 Minutes of the San Francisco Orchid Society Board of Directors January 11th 2011 Meeting called to Order 7:05 PM Present: Jean Lee, Dennis Westler, Maureen Clarke, Ellen Edelson, Ricki Kohn, Judy Bley I. President's Report: a. Mark Sullivan's article on ex situ conservation was discussed. It was decided that we will place it on our website and provide a URL in the newsletter along with an abstract to be written by Mark. Jean will contact Mark and Eric Hunt to get the abstract written and the document placed on-line. b. Nominating Committee: Jean reported that due to the original appointee's resignation, we need to find a new chair for the nominating committee, and hopefully two additional members.this puts us way behind the time-line dictated by our bylaws. c. We discussed the upcoming Thursday night event at the Academy of Sciences that will help publicize both the Pacific Orchid Exposition and the SFOS. This will be one of the regular Thursday evening events, held at the Academy with reduced admission, cocktails available, and often entertainment or lectures. The date is February 10th from 6:00-10:00 PM, the Admission is $ the San Francisco Orchid Society will have a table where we will be handing out information about the group and the show, and answering orchid questions. She will look at the configuration of the specific spaces, as their location within the building to see if they are appropriate for the society. VII.New Business a. POE:There is still a need for additional vendors to reach our budget for vendor fees. Ken has contacted additional people from the waiting list. There will be an information table at the Academy of Sciences' on February 10th. This is one of their regular evening events which goes from 6:00-10:00 PM.
