We have enjoyed the drive and display in Charters Towers as well as Woodstock, The All British Day, the Townsville Show and driving events around the city. It is encouraging to see many club members taking advantage of the weather and the driving conditions to get out in their cars and to socialize. In the next period we again have a menu of events commencing with the Combine Clubs Swap Meet and Show this Sunday commencing and 6:00am at the Townsville Showground, entrance from King s Road. So bring your car along, you must be in place by 8:00am, and bring along items for sale. The cost of a 5m x 10m site is just $10. However the swap meet will not happen as smoothly as it will without some commitment for labour. On Saturday there is a set-up working bee commencing at 8:00am. If you can give an hour, please come along. Volunteers will be conscripted at Thursday night s meeting. Similarly, labour for marshalling will be required on Sunday. So rather than sit around answering all the same questions at the display, make yourself available for an hour to guide the swappers and guide the visitors around the meet. I look forward to every member remaining involved with the club in all our endeavours. 6 Charters Towers Swap Meet 6-7 June 6

7 Charters Towers Swap Meet 6-7 June Now officially titled Charters Towers Motor Show and Swap Meet, what began as a very modest affair in the 70s has grown into one of North Queensland s premier motoring events. TVVHMC members from Townsville, the Burdekin and Charters attended this year, some participating either on the Saturday or Sunday and some on both. Tom and Jan Callow were present for all three days, beginning on the Friday, but due to Tom falling ill on the way up from Ayr, their 1910 Renault spent the entire three days in its trailer. We hope you re fully recovered now Tom. Left to fly the flag for early 20th century marques was Frank and Adrienne s 1910 Maxwell, kept company by former members Dave and Faye Martin s early REO. Charters Towers members Graham and Julie Foot and David Todd and Julie Weston displayed half a dozen or so vehicles over the weekend, including a lovely 1954 Morris Minor, a 1929 De Soto, and a Chev tourer and Chev truck of similar vintage. These were all in superb condition and a credit to their owners. Eight other Townsville Club cars successfully completed the 280-odd kilometre round trip under their own power. These were Derek and Helen s 1959 VW (which was runner-up in the highly competitive Best British/European category hearty congratulations), John and Marilyn s 1971 MGB, Greg and Linda s two Wolseleys, Bill and Jean s Morris Oxford, the other Derek s Cooper S, Tiny and Yvonne s EH Holdent ute, and George and Sandra s 1943 Ford Jeep. Well done to all the participants. Also present during the weekend were Bill and Bev Bunt, Ken and Jo Mc Wha, and surprise surprise, Rod Roach. Although it was rumoured that Rod would be travelling up from Melbourne on a motor bike, he appears instead to have traded his Winnebago for a Prado/Jayco rig which he had set up camp in. Much more civilised! Not camping over night were Bill and Bev who returned to Townsville on assignment to pick up Mal Lorimer from the airport. Mal was making one final visit to Townsville in order to drive his beloved Riley back to Sydney. Ken and Jo successfully manned a stall during Saturday and Sunday, returning home with a much lighter trailer and somewhat heavier wallets. For those who were unable to get to Charters Towers and for those who want some more of the same, don t forget the Combined Clubs Swap Meet coming up in July in Townsville. Bill Honniball Photos on page 6 All British Day 14 June 2015 All British Day 14 June 2015 A good roll up from the TVVHMC added to the success of this wonderful exhibition of Britain s past motoring glory. Twelve of our 17 vehicles were provided by six families: the Bunt s Austin Sheerline and Riley RMB, the Anderson s MGB and Riley RMA, The Walker s Morris Minor and Mini Cooper S, the Sibley s Wolseley 4/50 and Wolseley 24/80, The Cerutti s Dennis Fire Engine and Swift Roadster, and the Honniball s Morris Z and Vanguard utes. The other five vehicles were the O Donnell s Daimler, the Lee s Armstrong Siddeley, the McMenanin s Rover, the Morley s Morris Minor, and the Ryan s Morris Minor ute. Just looking, were Serge and Berice, Ken and Jo, Kathy, and Denis. As the driving force behind the event, the Jaguar Club had the numbers with 28 vehicles on display. Over the years the predominance of early Jaguar classics such as the Mark 2 and XJ6 has been replaced by the more modern cars. Nice as these 21 st century cars are, my preference still lies with the early models. Situated next to the Jags, the Marque Sports Car Club put on an excellent display as usual, with early MGs predominating. The only Triumphs to be seen were two very nice GT6s. Across the way, a pack of Morgans (including some early 3-wheelers) were a reminder that there is at least one British owned car company still manufacturing vehicles. For anyone who thought even three wheels were too many, the usual selection of restored British motorbikes were on display. More Minis than ever were spread up the hill beside the lake, interspersed with the occasional Austin 1800 or Morris 1300 as well as a very fine Moke that had come all the way from Mount Isa. An early Hillman Minx was a newcomer as were a late model Cortina and a very nicely presented P76, painted in the colours of a 1970s Townsville White Taxi. With the stationary engines chattering away on one side of the lake and TripleT playing British music on the other, the relative quiet of the School Canteen offered patrons the opportunity to sample British food, including of course, good old bangers and mash. The very relaxed atmosphere of this free entry car show contributed to a very enjoyable day for all those involved. Bill Honniball Photos on Page 8 7

9 Annandale Observation Run Sunday 5 July Fifteen members in eight cars departed Anderson Park shortly after 2 o clock. They were heading for Yolanda Drive where their run sheets would direct them through 12 kilometres of suburban roads which, if successfully negotiated, would land them at their destination, Weir Park. It is pleasing to announce that all participants arrived safely having done their best to collect the answers to the Observation Questions posed along the way. This resulted in a four-way tie for first place with all 13 questions answered correctly. Since it was going to be difficult to divide the winning prize (a bottle of wine) into four equal parts, a killer question decided the outcome What is the capacity in cubic inches of the VW 1300 which was the subject of Question 2? Without even resorting to a calculator Frank quickly came up with 80 cu.in., remarkably close to the exact conversion, The run wasn t just about answering a few questions however it was more about driving our beloved old cars through the delightful back blocks of Annandale before enjoying afternoon tea in the beautiful parklands adjacent to Aplins Weir. Perched beside us were a Swift, a Peugeot, a Minor, a Daimler, a Mercedes, a Mazda and a Zed (Morris variety) which were piloted by Frank and Adrienne, Ken and Jo, Norm and Jan, Warren, Gabe and Cheryl, Robert and Joan, and Bill and Jean. Keeping them company were the two moderns belonging to Chris and Bronwyn, and Serge and Berice. Serge and Berice had brought the total attendance up to 17 after joining us at Weir Park having driven directly there from their Annandale home. With such pleasant surroundings and such good company, the shadows had begun to grow quite long before the little gathering fired up their pride and joys before attempting to find their way home through the sometimes tricky Annandale streets without the benefit of a run home sheet. It is believed they all made it safely. Bill Honniball 9

10 May Club Captain's Report Previous Events The only Club event held since our June meeting has been the Observation Run around Annandale in which 17 members participated in nine cars. Reports on this as well as the Charters Towers Swap Meet and All British Day have been sent to the editor for inclusion in the July Running Board. Members were invited to display their cars at the Townsville Show. At the time of writing I don t have any information on who might have done so. Coming Events This Sunday 19 July is the Combined Clubs Swap Meet at the Showgrounds. Gates open at 6 am at the Kings Road entrance. If you are displaying your vehicle you should try to get there as early as possible. A number of members have volunteered to assist with setting up on Saturday or directing traffic and other tasks on Sunday. August is the month for one of our highlights afternoon tea at the Warren s. Be sure to keep 9 August free. Also in August is our Burdekin weekend on 22 nd and 23 rd. Details of this are published in the July Running Board and will also be sent out individually. Be sure to let Les and Chris know if you are coming so they can cater for you. If you re not going to the Burdekin you can display your car at the Masonic Home fete on the 22 nd. A number of members present at the June meeting indicated that they would do so. Since I intend to go to the Burdekin I would appreciate it if someone attending the fete could provide me with a report. See the updated Club Program in the July Running Board for more details of these and other events. Club Trailer Cover The company we purchased the last cover from, Paradise Signs, has two sizes for sale, a 6x3 metre vinyl tarp for $75 or a lighter vinyl 8x2 metre one for $50. The former would be more suitable. Alternatively, Beehive Vinyl Products produce a 4x3 metre heavy duty, double stitched (with eyelets) product for $160. Updated Club Program Changed or additional items in the program published in the July Running Board include: 22 August Masonic Home Fete (new event) 22/23 August Burdekin Weekend (departure details) 13 September Hervey Range Tea Rooms (change of date, previously 27 September) Please discard any earlier copies you may have. Bill Honniball Burdekin Bash Our pilgrimage to the Burdekin this year is scheduled for the weekend of 22/23 August. Les Wassmuth will provide a run sheet for members starting, as usual, at Plantation Park (south side of Ayr) at 8:30 on Saturday morning 22 August. So as to not miss the start, members travelling from Townsville will need to meet on the side street opposite the crematorium (Lowe Road) at 7 o clock for departure promptly at 7:15. After arriving in Ayr, the run will comprise a relaxed drive of approximately 100 km around some of the back roads of Ayr and Home Hill. You should pack smoko and lunch and prepare yourself for some interesting stop offs along the way. Saturday evening will be a barbecue at Les and Chris s place, 12 Lisa Drive Ayr, beginning at 6:30. Steak, sausages, buns and salad will be provided for a mere $5 per head. Those not returning home after the barbecue will need to book accommodation in one of the local motels or van parks, or alternatively pitch a tent in the Wassmuth s back yard. There is ample room and bathroom and toilet facilities are available. On Sunday morning there will be a drive to one of the beaches before returning home in plenty of time for lunch. If you are planning to come: 1. Ring Les and Chris ( or mobile ) with the number attending (for catering purposes). 2. Bring Saturday lunch and morning and afternoon tea. 3. If leaving from Townsville, assemble opposite the crematorium at 7:00 am for a 7:15 departure. 4. If staying in Ayr overnight, either pack your camping gear or book your own accommodation. 10
