2 Page 2 Star Reflections Kathy Menold, Section President The Board of Directors has good news to tell our members. Larry Altman, our Vice President/Event Coordinator, has started a new Facebook page for the Ozark Section called MB Ozark. If you are currently on Facebook and would like to be added to the MB Ozark page, you can request Larry to be your friend and he will invite you to the site. This will be a new way of keeping up on current Ozark Section events and a way of sharing information among our members. There is information and photos already posted about our April event and the upcoming events in June. Once you become a member, you can invite other Ozark Section members onto the Facebook page. Please remember, this site is for Ozark Section information only. Personal information will not be allowed and Larry will keep it monitored. You may have also noticed in the recent The Star of the Ozarks newsletter, the ads are now in color. Paul Springmann, our Newsletter Editor is working with Tyson Printing to make updated improvements with the newsletter. We normally hold these meetings in a Board member s home. If you would like to join us, please contact me prior to the meeting at or menold1@cox.net. If you have any questions regarding the MBCA Ozark Section Club, please contact one of our Board members listed in The Star of the Ozarks newsletter. Ozark Section Supporter since 2009 Please remember, if you have a Mercedes-Benz that you would like to sell, not only can you advertise it in the Star Magazine, but you can also put an ad in The Star of the Ozarks newsletter or on Facebook at no charge. This may also include parts, as long as they are genuine Mercedes-Benz parts. Be sure to contact Larry Altman with Facebook, larwan@cox.net or our newsletter editor. Bob and Patti Tetu had business size cards printed that can be given to our current advertisers listed in The Star of the Ozarks newsletter. This is a way of showing your appreciation for not only their ad, but to let them know that you are patronizing their business. Bob will have these cards available at all our events. The Board of Directors highly recommends you support our advertisers by leaving these cards, but it is suggested at a restaurant, you leave it with the owner or manager. I would like to also remind you that your comments and submissions for the newsletter are always welcome. Your Mercedes-Benz stories are a great interest to all of us. Please submit these stories to me, Kathy Menold, President, menold1@cox.net. I will forward them on to Paul Springmann to be printed in future issues. The MBCA Ozark Section Board meetings are held four times a year: the first Wednesday in the months of March, June, September, and December. These meetings are opening to ANY MBCA Ozark Section member that would like to attend. 3 Page 3 Poker Fun Run Submitted by Kathy Menold, Section President Pictures by Patti Tetu, Larry Altman, and Pamela Hill Spring is in the air, the trees are green with foliage and flowers are in bloom. This couldn t be a better time to drive the back roads of Arkansas and Missouri. In fact, that is just what we did on Saturday, April 25, 2015 with 15 Mercedes-Benz and one BMW. The weather was prefect, especially for those driving convertibles. The Club members started our poker run at the Northwest Mercedes-Benz Dealership in Bentonville, AR. The members were hosted to a wonderful continental breakfast by Jonathan Before leaving the dealership, Larry and Wanda Altman collected a $10.00 fee per vehicle, had each person sign the Release of Liability form, and provided them with a contest sheet and their instructions where to make each stop for another poker card. Patti and Bob Tetu had a member from each vehicle draw their first poker card. Once all the vehicles were lined up to start the poker run, Larry Altman took a picture of each member s vehicle, and Dave Jones proceeded to have each driver leave approximately 2-3 minutes apart. We started out our travel on AR-71 into Pea Ridge, AR. Our next stop was to pick up our 2nd poker card at the Short Stop Grill in Garfield, AR, where Patti Tetu and Pamela Hill met us. From there we traveled northeast into Missouri, turning onto highway MO-112 leading to the Roaring River State Park. Wanda Altman met us at the General Store with our 3rd poker card. We crossed over MO-112 onto Missouri State Road F traveling several miles to Uncle Roy s One Stop General Store where we met up with Bob Tetu for our 4th poker card. I must say that Hwy. F was an incredible rollercoaster ride, especially in our SLK. The back roads of Arkansas and Missouri are so much fun, but this was a real experience. After leaving Uncle Roy s we made a right turn onto MO-86 East for several miles before turning right onto Hwy. P, which turns into AR-23 and we were back in Arkansas. We drove through Holiday Island heading toward Eureka Springs before making a sharp right onto Hwy. 187 toward Beaver, AR. There we crossed the one lane Little Golden Gate Bridge. This bridge is the last remaining suspension bridge in the State of Arkansas. After crossing the bridge, we met with Larry to have another picture taken. From there we traveled the narrow stretch of road on Hwy. 86 up to Hwy. 62 which directed us back into Rogers, AR. Larry and Wanda had made arrangements at Famous Dave s BBQ in Rogers for lunch, and to give out the Poker Fun Run award. As we gathered at the restaurant, there were members who had been at the dealership and weren t able to continue on the poker run, and there were members who weren t able to be at the dealership, but met us at the restaurant. All and all, we had 37 members participate in the event. Patti Tetu gave each driver that had participated in the Poker Fun Run their final poker card. Patti tallied up the poker hands, and it was determined that Andrew and Vicki Spranza from Farmington, AR were the event winners. I presented them with a Mercedes-Benz paperweight trophy, which had been donated to our section by the Northwest Mercedes-Benz Bentonville Dealership. Patti also had several door prizes to give to our members: Patti Schuh won a Mercedes-Benz visor, Terry Lee won a wine golf kit, and Joslyn Lee won a fountain candle. I also presented Ray Kannard with a key chain as being a new member at his first club event. I want to thank Larry and Wanda Altman and Patti and Bob Tetu for hosting another fine event for the Ozark Section Mercedes-Benz Club. As a reminder, these events can t be done without the help of our members. Our Board of Directors has been doing a wonderful job planning and providing these events. Remember they are done for you and we can use your support. For those members that are willing to help, please contact Larry Altman larwan@cox.net or myself, menold1@cox.net. These events take some time in planning and it s always appreciated by the Board of Directors for your assistance. Contact: larwan@cox.net or

5 Page 5 Hot Springs 2015 Annual Horse Racing Submitted by Kathy Menold, Section President Pictures by Patti Tetu The annual horse racing event at the Oaklawn Race Track in Hot Springs, Arkansas has always been a popular event to attend for the MBCA Ozark Section. The Club has been going back to the Oaklawn Race Track each year since March We have enjoyed staying at the Austin Hotel and Convention Center in downtown Hot Springs only blocks away from the bath house row and shopping. For the last 5 years we have reserved seating and a buffet luncheon in the Carousel Room at the race track. This year was another outstanding year with 37 members and guests. We had dinner on Friday evening at the Porterhouse Steak and Seafood Restaurant, within walking distance from the Austin Hotel. Once again this year we had first time members in our group. Marty and Bea Anderson from Hot Springs Village, AR, Don and Phillip Klinger from Springdale, AR, Andrew and Vicki Spranza from Farmington, AR, Woody and Jane Acord of Eureka Springs, AR, and Pamela Hill from Springdale, AR. Pamela was also presented with a Mercedes-Benz key ring for being a new club member. Our members were able to socialize in the Austin Hotel s Parlor room on the 14 th floor and bring with them snacks to share and drinks of choice. Larry Altman gave us the information on where to go at the race track and who to ask for if we became lost. He also made arrangements for the MBCA Ozark Section to sponsor the 2 nd race of the day. The Board Members of the MBCA Ozark Section were able to go down onto the race track and present the winning trophy (which was a beautiful glass plate) to the owner and trainer.
6 Page 6 Saturday afternoon, after the races, members went back to the Austin Hotel s Parlor room to relax or go out for dinner to a restaurant of their choice. However, it wasn t long before the TV in the parlor was on with the Razorback Basketball team playing in the National play-offs. Even with all our cheering and support, the game didn t turn out well! On Sunday we had planned to drive up to the Mt. Magazine Lodge for lunch, but unfortunately it was raining, so our plans changed. After breakfast we said our good-byes and went on our separate ways. I would like to thank Larry and Wanda Altman for helping Joel and I plan the Hot Springs event again this year. Larry made the arrangements for the Carousel Room, which turned out to be more than a challenge for him on the day of the races. All in all we had a wonderful time, with some members winning more than others. I think our two top winners were George Williams and Patti Tetu. Please remember our Ozark Section Club events are only possible because there are members who plan them, and those members which help at the events. It does not involve a great deal of effort to organize or plan an event, just some ideas, some time, and most of all fun. If you would like to help with an event, please contact Larry Altman, our Vice President/Event Coordinator. larwan@cox.net or Upcoming Ozark Section MBCA Events Date Event Location June July 25 Art of the Car Concours Kansas City Art Institute Membership Event Kansas City Aug 22 Titanic Museum Tour Branson El Pueblito Restaurant Bella Vista Ozark Section Supporter since 2013
