Our older members know about the reciprocity benefit that we all have by being a member of a yacht club but for the more recent members I would like to take a few minutes and tell you about this fabulous opportunity that is included your membership at NERYC. Reciprocity means reciprocal or mutual benefit. Most of the yacht clubs around the bay that are members of the CBYCA (Chesapeake Bay Yacht Clubs Association) have a reciprocity agreement with members of other yacht clubs in the area. What this means is that if you are planning a trip around the bay you can call ahead and make reservations to spend the night at other yacht clubs for a much lower fee than a normal marina. The same will be true for us this year when we will be hosting other visiting yacht clubs Inside this issue. Your reciprocity benefit is not only useable on the Chesapeake Bay but throughout the entire country and maybe even throughout the world. A couple of years ago I was attending a Commodore s Ball and one of the people at my table was talking about his recent visit to San Francisco. His boss wanted him to go San Francisco to take care of some important business that couldn t wait. Unfortunately, April 1st 2007 First Boat on the New Docks: Pentaquod owned by the Martino Family * fyi - Pentaquod (penta cood) is the Susquehannook Indian in James Michener s CHESAPEAKE due to the short notice, he was unable to get a hotel room since there were a lot of conventions going on at the same time and the hotels were full. He said he was talking to one of his fellow yacht club members about not being able to find a room and they suggested that he call ahead to see if there might be any yacht clubs in the area that would have overnight sleeping facilities. To his relief he found one and stayed there for two nights. He said that it was the best business trip that he had ever had. Instead of coming back to a hotel at the end of day and eating in his room he went to the club, had a nice dinner, and after talking to some of the members was invited to go out on a sunset cruise. He said that he felt right at home and enjoyed spending time with fellow boaters. In addition the cost of the room was much less than if he had stayed in a hotel.

2 Recently I received a letter from the Commodore of the Matthew s Yacht Club in the Solomon s Island area. They were writing to establish a reciprocity agreement between their yacht club and ours for the summer since they are not a member of the CBYCA. Apparently they are planning a cruise in the northern bay area and wanted to contact clubs in advance to set up a reciprocity agreement so they would be able to spend the night if necessary. Our Secretary, Ginny Somers sent them a letter acknowledging that we were willing to reciprocate their offer. So if any of you are planning to head down towards the Solomon s Island area this summer you might want to check out their facility. The letter that they sent us is posted on the bulletin board at the club. The reciprocity benefit is probably not used that much by most of our members since they don t know that it s available. If you think you might be traveling down the bay this summer and would like to stay at other yacht clubs instead of marinas, contact the NERYC office and ask for the CBYCA Blue Book. The book tells you how to get to each club by land and by water and gives you a phone number to call if you have any questions. There is also information about club facilities and neighboring towns so you can do some shopping, have dinner at a local restaurant, or if you want to get off the boat for the night some places even have a motel or bed and breakfast nearby. The reciprocity benefit of your membership is a great way for you to visit other yacht clubs on the bay and not have to spend the money that marinas charge, so check it out and use it sometime this summer. Opening Day is only a month away!!! See you at the club. Brenda Carlson, Commodore From the Vice Opening Weekend is just 1 short month away. Our new marina is almost completed and yesterday I took photographs of the first boat in their new slip. Nigel and his dedicated crew of workers have tirelessly labored for many weekends, in bitter cold conditions building the boardwalk, dinghy racks, landscaping and a host of other chores not included in the dock construction project by our contractors Dissen & Juhn. There is still much to be completed before Opening Weekend but in true NERYC fashion, many will rally together to have the club, docks and grounds shining brightly for our Grand Opening! Work day is scheduled for Saturday 4/21, and we will once again polish the brass, shine the windows, power wash the building, remove debris and plant the annual flowers and shrubbery and don the emerald green awning on the patio. There will be many jobs to be done that day in final preparations for the gala opening. The Opening weekend festivities kick off this year with our 4 th annual Margaritaville night on Friday evening May 4 th and we will be entertained by the musical stylings of DJ Robert Cross who will also have Karaoke available for our NERYC Idol contestants. We will have a Mexican buffet served that evening to make it easier on the wait staff and allow everyone to be fed in a timelier manner and also free up more help behind the bar for making that "frozen concoction that helps us hang on"! Saturday, is "Cinco de Mayo", Opening Day and the commencement of our Spring Racing Season. Visiting clubs will begin to gather upon our lawn at 1500 and will be treated to a bounty of sumptuous hors d oeuvres & refreshments before the official ceremony starts at 1600.

After the Opening ceremony, we will once again have our traditional Derby Day Party" and best hat contest.

We are planning on having each pier on the new docks decorated in a "Mexiribbean" theme.

Prizes will be awarded to the most original and best dressed pier! We have a very dedicated and committed Opening day crew, who are working hard to pull off a spectacular weekend for all of us.

3 After the Opening ceremony, we will once again have our traditional Derby Day Party" and best hat contest. We will continue to party into the wee hours of the morning and a continental breakfast buffet will be available on the veranda at 0900 Sunday morning. We are planning on having each pier on the new docks decorated in a "Mexiribbean" theme. We will ask for point people from each of the 4 piers to get together with your pier mates and decorate the entrances to your piers and your boats. Prizes will be awarded to the most original and best dressed pier! We have a very dedicated and committed Opening day crew, who are working hard to pull off a spectacular weekend for all of us. They will be contacting you for donations of hors d oeuvres and also will ask you to place your best wishes to our Princess Kelly in the Queen of the Bay pageant (to be held June 3 at MYC) & also to wish your fellow boaters a phenomenal boating season. Please be generous and take a quarter, half or full page ad in the program as this is our only means of funding all of the festivities for the weekend! Looking forward to seeing everyone in your new slips and back on the water! OPENING DAY BOOKLET Production of the Opening Day booklet is underway. We are still looking for advertisements to fund the booklet. The format is a folded booklet, which provides a half letter sized page. The booklet will have a thick carded cover with as many pages as are required in the center. It will be center stapled and printed with the cover in full color and the ads inside in single color (black). It will be distributed to all members and visiting guests. Adverts can be: Full page (approx 8 x 5 ) - $100 Half page - $50 Quarter page - $25 You may submit finished adverts in JPEG or GIF formats or words/ captions and graphics which I will layout and return to you for approval. The crowd was entertained with the music of DJ Robert Cross, who periodically throughout the night encouraged several to display their vocal talents via karaoke.

4 FROM THE REAR Greetings from R/C Jon, We just so happened to have about 46 people show up at the Burgee lounge for Birthday/Anniversary night celebration in March. This marked our largest Friday night crowd yet. The crowd was entertained with the music of DJ Robert Cross, who periodically throughout the night encouraged several to display their vocal talents via karaoke. Music and karaoke again will be featured on Friday, April 13. By the time this issue of Waterline is published, the Murder Mystery Western night on March 31st will have already taken place. So in advance of the event I called my psychic and was told that everyone had a good time and it was the best ever. Mark your calendars, for the annual Oyster Roast / Silent Auction event is upon us, April 14 th. A nice buffet of oysters, fried chicken, ham, shrimp and salad lead off for a fun evening hanging out with your friends and aggressively bidding for auction items. At this time we are asking for donations for the silent auction that would help in our goal to raise funds to offset some of the Commodore s Ball costs. Call Jon Fowler at and let me know what you would like to donate. It s also not too late to call the Club to make dinner event reservations at Cost is $35 for Oyster Roast or $22 without oysters. Opening Day is just around the corner and will surely be an event not to miss. Some highlights; the Friday night Margaritaville party, Saturday sail race, Opening Day Ceremony and dedication of the new docks. With all this going on you may need an extra day to rest. If you need a permission slip to skip work, we can accomodate. Michael & Margaret are sailors and will be joining our fleet. Darren & Dana McCarnan come to us from North East, MD. Darren is a boat detailer and, as power boaters, he and Dana will be joining our fleet. Frank and Wendy Luxl are sailors from Wilmington, DE and will also be joining the fleet. Last but not least we have Ben and Andrea Wilhelm. Ben and Andrea come to us from North East, and, as sailors, will also be joining our fleet. 5 and friends. Murder Mystery Our murder mystery A Backful of Bullets was a booming success! We had 115 members and guests in attendance. Susan Andrews and I would like to say a special thank you to the cast, dancers, and crew. And, of course, I would like to thank the NERYC staff who worked tirelessly at food preparation, setup, serving, and the multitude of other tasks they perform to make it all work. The proceeds of the event, after expenses, will be contributed to the beautification of our club. Again, thanks to all who donated their time and personal items for this event. Recruiting As always, please keep in mind the New Membership Drive Promotion! Sign up two (2) new members between now and December 31, 2007 and win a NERYC restaurant credit for $525. All members in good standing are eligible to participate. The credit may also be applied to club functions such as the Commodore's Ball. Specifications: Limit 1 award per membership. Award does not cover tax and gratuity. The 2 new memberships must first pay the initiation fee and prorated dues before the restaurant credit is authorized. Credit for new memberships must be verified by the Membership Chairperson. Please be sure your 2 new members list your name on the membership application as the sponsoring member. I NEED YOUR HELP!!! 12 1 Junior Sailing Camp It s not too early for the kids to start planning for the 2007 junior sailing camp. The dates this year are June 27 th through the 30 th. We expect a large turnout this year and so we may schedule a second camp if needed. Please get your reservations in early and pass the word about the camp to friends and relatives. The full 2007 junior sailing program will be out in the next month or two. This season we will hold a NERYC junior sailing championship regatta for racers of all skill levels. We will also head south on the bay and compete in a few Junior CBYRA sanctioned events. Please feel free to contact me for more information on the junior sale race program. Rick Hanson
