The evening will start with dinner beginning at 6:00 p.m. followed by the business meeting at 7:00 p.m. The board s directors, club s committee chairs, and executive committee will provide prepared remarks and answer questions from the floor as well as any received in advance. February will be worth $300 because Josh Clark wasn t in attendance at the January meeting. Congratulations to Marti Eisenlord, she won the Smith & Wesson M&P.380 February s Gun Raffle will be a Ruger American.45 If you have any issue(s) you would like addressed or if you missed the Future Projects Committee s strategic planning presentation this past October, the State of the Club Address will provide you with a second opportunity to provide feedback to the board. We will vote on whether or not to take out a loan to fund the club s Flexibility, Improvements, Remove windows, Environment, Access, Range distances, Modernization, Safety (FIREARMS) Range Improvement Project, recognize new life members, elect directors, and present recognition awards. The board hopes to reach capacity in the clubhouse to maximize collaboration on our future projects and to inform members of decisions made during Club Shooting Hours Are as follows, 8:00 AM until sunset, use you hunting guide to determine sunset. If there is an organized event under lights, that may go to 10 PM. The lights on ranges are for organized events only. Guests Anyone who is not immediate family is considered a guest and is required to pay the $5.00 guest fee. Mail Boxes are located on each range. Immediate family is defined as, spouse, and minor children.

Letter From The President The discontinuation of hardcopy newsletter mailings may be one of the biggest surprises in club members recent memory. On behalf of the board and myself, I apologize for the lack of publicity surrounding such a significant change. The decision was made during March 2018 s board of directors meeting and published in Volume 2018, Issue 04, April Saginaw Field & Stream Club Newsletter. In the Letter from the President section, I explained the reason for the proposed and approved change, As we continue to look for ways to operate more efficiently and effectively, I am pleased to announce the board s decision to end paper newsletter mailings beginning in Since beginning digital newsletters a few years ago as a way to modernize the club and reduce mailing costs, our cost savings has slowly eroded as our bulk mail rate increased due to fewer mailings. I realize there are ~400 individuals who still receive hardcopy mailings but I cannot justify spending ~$9,500 on that when we could use those funds to improve the ranges or the road. If you are unwilling to provide us with a valid address prior to the discontinuation of the physical mailing in 2019, we will provide printed copies available at the clubhouse. Additionally, you can access the newsletters for the most recent rolling year on our website If neither of those solutions will address your personal situation please let me know and we will see if there are any other feasible alternatives. I only received one response from a concerned member after the publication of the April 2018 newsletter. The board discussed the letter in-depth during April s board meeting ultimately deciding to continue as planned. During membership meetings, I answered several members questions and made several announcements regarding the change so we felt comfortable with the publicity surrounding the discontinuation. However, based on the response we ve received since the middle of the January the board voted in favor of resuming newsletters beginning with this edition. Please note that the board will revisit this issue, as the forecasted cost for 2019 is $10,500+ (reflective of no January mailing), which is an increase from 2018 s expense while both overall membership and those receiving physical mailings have decreased. I am currently in ongoing communications with Lightning Printing to help determine potential solutions moving forward. We have discussed everything from amending the frequency of mailings to reducing the size of the mailed newsletter and everything in between. The moral of the story is that the board is not comprised of mind readers. Without feedback, we make decisions based on what we believe to be the best interest of the club. The board continues to operate at less than full capacity. The implications of that is that we likely do not have all of the viewpoints we could have while discussing such matters as the stoppage of hardcopy newsletter mailings. Serving on the board provides the best opportunity for you to advocate for issues that you are passionate about. If you are passionate about a club issue but unable or unwilling to serve on the board, board meetings are open meetings. I make it a point to provide people in attendance an opportunity to speak. If you did not receive a nomination from the floor and are interested in volunteering please let me know. We can discuss your options to fill a vacancy to serve members on the board. What we do and how we do it, should not be an opaque mystery shrouded in secrecy. Instead, I believe it should be very transparent and that is why I provide the information I do in my written comments. Thank you for your patience and for your continued support of Saginaw Field and Stream! I hope that together we will continue working cooperatively to grow our membership and enhance our club. Have a great February! See you at the State of the Club Address! Regards, David Anderson, Club President

By Mike Meyer After two shoots, Saginaw Field & Stream Club is still in the lead in the traveling winter trap league. We had a good lead after the first shoot thanks to Tom Berry, Jack Armstrong and Greg King. It s a good thing we had a big lead, because it left us room for the lousy performance, we managed on the second shoot. Of course, when we started shooting, the temperature was 2 above and the wind was picking up. Anyway, we are still 2 percentage points ahead of Brant, and 9 points ahead of Shiawassee. We still have 4 shoots left, so anything can happen. We will be starting up our youth shotgun training again this summer, (following youth rifle training). We ll have details in future newsletters. If you are going to buy your child a first shotgun, do him or her a favor and get something that s softer on recoil. Light, single shot, break-open guns are the hardest-kicking shotguns there are and will probably discourage your son or daughter from shooting. If you can afford it, a 12 or 20 gauge semi-automatic will absorb about 30% of the recoil and are a lot more fun to shoot. Besides that, a good semi-automatic shotgun will hold its value a lot better than the bargain-basement single shots. Likewise, field load shotgun shells (and sporting clay loads, or handicap loads) are also hard-kicking, and no fun to shoot. If you want soft-shooting shells, we have a stock of light target loads in both 12 and 20 gauge at competitive prices. Due to technical difficulties, we will not be able to report the straight shooters in skeet and trap until next month. The kitchen crew needs your help! Do you like having fun, meeting people and best of all, good food??? The crew for the membership meeting dinner could use a few volunteers to help before and after the dinner. Come join us once a month if you re into fun! There s a special perk too, but you have to join us to learn the secret! Call Carl Hubinger at for more details.

The Archery Report The first month of the year is now at an end, that means all the leagues at a third of the way through shooting rounds. We have been having a blast at all of the leagues. This year my schedule has only allowed me to shoot the Monday night animal league, and I have been having so much fun. I grew up shooting a three spot target at 20 yards, so shooting an animal target at varying distances has been a good change of pace. It has also been very challenging. I am used to having a specific point to aim at on a target and having a non-concentric brown and black fur pattern has proven challenging for me. If you are a target shooter want to broaden your horizons please come out to the animal league on Monday or Tuesday. Vice-versa for those that only shoot the animal league. Putting a standard 3 or 5 spot up and trying to do the same thing over and over again is really challenging. You can shoot the best round of your life and still not be satisfied because of a couple of really small mistakes. In summary, try something new in the archery world, you never know what you may learn. In addition to the leagues we had our first indoor 3-D shoot of the year on January 19 and 20. We had 32 shooters plus kids come out and try their hand at the targets. I had never shot indoor 3-D until last year and have grown to thoroughly enjoy it. While a summer 3-D course of 30 targets will take anywhere from 2-3 hours to shoot, our indoor shoots only take about an hour to complete. It is a great way to keep the rust off of your shooting form during these cold months before we can start putting targets outside again. Our next indoor 3-D shoot is on February Come out for a little Valentine s weekend shoot, I can promise that you will have a good time. Finally, if you are not following SFS Archery on Facebook and Instagram please do so! We put out all our event information through it and it is one of the easiest ways to contact me. The average response time for our page is 16 minutes. That may mean I am on my phone too much, but it also means you will get your questions answered in a timely manner. If you are already following the Facebook page, please like and share our events. This is the best way to get event information out to a large number of people very easily. You never know who in your friend group may be interested in one of our events. Help us spread the news! Ever forward, Andrew Flegler DEBT RETIREMENT DONATIONS We are still looking for donations to help retire the building debt. Your contribution would be greatly appreciated. If you can t contribute cash, we will take used rifle and pistol casings and primers and shotgun hulls and primers as well as donations to our garage sale table. All funds raised will go to debt retirement. Your name will be posted on the donation board. Jim De Clerck, Treasurer

January 2019 For legislative issues go to Lansing Watch on our web page: saginawfieldandstream.com Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) and Antler Point Restrictions (APR s) pretty much dominated the Natural Resources Commission (NRC) this month. In 2018 there were 57 deer found to have CWD. 41 in Montcalm County and 9 in Kent with the others were found in surrounding counties except for the one in Dickenson. 20 of these were female and ranged in age from 1 to 9 with the majority in the 1 through 3 range. 37 were male and ranged in age from 1 to 4 with the majority in the 1 and 2 range. Since deer have been found with CWD. 44 female with the same age and majority range. 67 males with the same age range but with a majority range of from 1 to 3. These figures show that the disease is most prevalent, but not significantly, in males in the 1 or 2 age range. It seems that younger deer are the most susceptible to contracting the disease. I m not sure this is helpful in trying to manage the disease, as reducing the population by age is not feasible. There was a hunter survey report. 57% said that hunting was an important recreational activity. 50% harvested a deer and 46% processed their own animal. However, 66% of those deer were processed outside the county where they were harvested, and that is a problem because carcass transport is a contribution factor in the spread of the disease. The processors disposed of the carcass they handled. And 25% went to a landfill. However, some were buried, incinerated, fed to other animals or left on the bare ground all of which are contributing factors in the spread CWD. 24% of the hunters used urine and 52% used bait, both of which are contributing factors. The majority of hunters said using trained shooters was unacceptable as was attempting no management action. Most hunters want regulated hunting seasons with liberal bag limits. Most hunters said that seeing fewer deer was unacceptable as was a reduced population. Most hunters felt the DNR would take corrective action but didn t like what was happening so far --- even though what was happening so far was backed up by sound scientific management. I don t have the words to express my disgust with a percentage of our deer hunting population. Some are ignorant, some are greedy and some just don t give a damn. What s it going to take? I received a white paper published by Michael Miller, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and John Fisher, Wildlife disease study University of Georgia which goes in depth of what has been happening with CWD over the past five decades. Their conclusions are; heavily infected populations will not thrive in the long-term (didn t say how long long-term was) and that minimizing human exposure is prudent. Prudent??? The APR discussion was split about 50/50 for and against. However, those against were thump area residents and those for were from APR supporting organizations. I was privileged to sit on the DNR Law Enforcement strategic planning panel. We discussed a number of issues related to where Law Enforcement should direct its attention. All about the future, which got me thinking. The future was born today in some rural or urban area or maybe in another country. Born ignorant of our life style and quality of life. Ignorant of the natural resources, hunting, fishing, trapping and shooting. The future went to school today and learned to fear guns and how wildlife are pets which must be free ranging and protected. The future got married today and proceeded to raise more ignorant futures. The future voted today basing those votes on ignorance. About four generations later the future sat looking at a picture album and asks what are they doing? Oh that s something the old timers used to do but you can t do that anymore. Gee. that s too bad. It looks like fun. Jim De Clerck
