Volume 2017 Issue 09 September September Dinner Menu BBQ Spareribs finger lickin good! Tater tots, mixed veggies, salad, dessert & drink Sept. is worth $280 because Brock Rupp was not present and did not win $ Identification Statement Saginaw Field and Stream Club Newsletter is published monthly by the Saginaw Field and Stream Club N. Gleaner Rd. September s raffle will be a.40cal Glock 27.and gun. Bring your money, this gun is sweet! September 21st Membership Meeting Understanding the Shiawassee River State Game Area I have been involved with the Shiawassee Flats area since I was a teenager and I am very impressed with the terrific program that they have developed for it. The Shiawassee River State Game Area is located just about 5 miles southeast of our club and extends for another 5 miles to the south. We have asked Jeremiah Heise the DNR Biologist to be our speaker for this program. He will give a little history and explain how you can hunt in this area. He will be joined by some of the officers of the Shiawassee Flats Citizen & Hunters Association who will tell how their organization operates. I feel that they are one of the finest conservation clubs in the area and we will learn how they are deeply involved in the operation of the State Game Area. I have seen them raise a lot of money, deal with the Natural Resource Commission, and provide support and recognition to the DNR workers who get the fields ready to hunt. Chuck Hoover Club Shooting Hours Are as follows, 8:00 AM until sunset, use you hunting guide to determine sunset. If there is an organized event under lights, that may go to 10 PM. The lights on ranges are for organized events only. Guests Anyone who is not immediate family is considered a guest and is required to pay the $5.00 guest fee. Mail Boxes are located on each range. Immediate family is defined as, spouse, and minor children.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT I m happy to report that by the time this newsletter is published that we should be very close to completing significant renovations to the upper pistol range in order to get it improved and re-opened for all to use. I d like to thank Steven Graebner from Graebner Excavating for his work the berm and taking care of the improvements for us as well as all the other members who have put in work to get this range improved. We will be installing target fixtures at the backstop that will keep all targets on the same line. If you wish to shoot closer to the target, you ll need to move your shooting position closer as the targets will now be in a fixed position. For those of you who travel around to various other ranges this will be a familiar set up to you. I ve heard a variety of feedback on the rifle range bench that has the new window. Please keep the feedback coming so we can continue to improve your shooting experience on not only the rifle, but all of the ranges. Again, if you haven t checked out the lower pistol range in a while, take a look at it. I think you ll like what you see. Have you seen the new website yet? We re constantly making changes to make it as user friendly as possible and a refreshed look. You ll be seeing changes over the next few months so check back often to see what s new! If you haven t already, join the clubs Facebook page Saginaw Field and Stream Club so you can see updates, photos, and reminders for various events going on at the club. As summer is winding down, we re going to be resuming the membership meetings and dinners. The next dinner is Thursday, September 21st at 6 PM followed by the membership meeting at 7 PM. Put it on your calendar and come on out for a great meal! We ll surely have a lot to catch up on after the break from dinners and meetings this summer. I hope to see you all there! Thank you, Matt Shapley President

Archery Update This summer has flown by extremely fast. Probably somewhat due to all the amazing archery events that are available around the state. Every weekend there is some type of shoot going on somewhere nearby to keep you busy. If you haven t ventured out to some of the surrounding clubs to experience a change of setting you should give it a try. It s a great way to change up the pace, meet new people, and make some great memories. Part of the reason I am pushing this is that we have had archers from all over the state, country, and continent come to Saginaw Field and Stream within the past few weeks. The Rinehart 100 was once again a great event that brought people from all over to our little slice of heaven. I met people that drove over from Canada or up from Ohio over the weekend and all of them had a great time. Who can t when you are shooting at giraffes, elephants, dinosaurs, world class whitetails, and red stags? Also I want to give a huge thank all those who helped setup, host, and takedown the event. It may have been miserable at times due to the weather but without you it wouldn t have been possible. Secondly, I want to thank the rest of the club for allowing the ranges to be closed for a couple of days while we hosted this event. The weekend after the Rinehart was the MAA 900. There were 101 archers that came out and shot at 40, 50, and 60 meters, and there were some impressive shooters. The picture below was of the pro bale at the end of the tournament. By then they had completely shot the center out of the target! If you are interested in trying something like this, next year it will not be hosted by Saginaw Field and Stream but by nearby, Mid-Michee Bowman. Give it a chance! I know I am looking forward to shooting it next year. Finally I mentioned this last month but I want to give a little bit more detail in this newsletter. This September 23 and 24 we will be hosting the last club outdoor shoot of the year. It will be a Pure Michigan 3D course. All of the shots will be simulating something that you could encounter this fall. I will tell you right now that it will not be your standard shoot. You will be placed into different hunting situations at each target and will have to decide what to do. The scoring will be done to reflect shot placement on an animal. The 11, 10, and 8 rings will all be scored the same. They are all considered a good shot. You never want to hit outside that vital area though, so an arrow hitting the target outside the 8 ring is a -5. A miss is still considered 0, but if you decide to pass on a target and not shoot you will receive 3 points. Better to pass on a shot you are not confident in rather than wound an animal. If you think you are ready for bow season come on out and do some last minute shooting just to make sure. I hope to see you there! Ever forward, Andrew Flegler

For legislative issues go to Lansing Watch on our web page: saginawfieldandstream.com This month s trip was to Jackson starting with a tour of the various State Parks in the area. I am continually amazed at the beautiful offerings of our State Parks. All over the state there are opportunities to commune with nature, observe wondrous scenery, and learn the history of Michigan. Even if you are not a camper, a visit to any one of them is time well spent. Speaking of State Parks, The change to the Bay City Recreation Area name has been put on hold. It seems that the locals cannot come to any agreement on how the park and Tobico should be managed. Locals do not want any hunting, and the hunters and farmers want the wildlife controlled. The meeting I attended was mass confusion as the attendees were arguing with one another and with the DNR. There is one other problem in that most of the Tobico was purchased with Pittman/Robinson funds which requires the land be managed for wildlife by wildlife managers. A portion of the land has not met those criteria for some time. Basically the violation of the P/R Act was ignored. It was pointed out that all of the Tobico must either restored; the funds returned, or land of equal value, in the area, be purchased to replace that which was lost. The tour was timely as the first meeting was the Parks Committee. Most often these committee meetings involve reviews of the various park management plans, outdoor recreation plans and budgets. I don t go into great detail about the parks because there isn t enough space here to do them justice. If you are interested in knowing more, go to the DNR web site. There are maps, pictures and commentary on each park. If you happen to drive by a park, stop in, you will not be wasting your time. The Marketing Committee followed the Parks Committee with descriptions of how they plan on letting the citizens of Michigan know what is available in the way of hunting, fishing, trapping and general recreation. The Youth Conservation Council is looking for some teenagers to join the group. They are the youth advisers to the Natural Resource Commission (NRC). If you think you would be interested or know of someone that would be interested the contact information is available on the DNR web site or you can contact me and I will pass it on to the appropriate people. Many of you have been hearing about pink camo being allowed as a replacement option for hunter orange. This was discussed and basically declined as a viable option. There were a lot of reasons given, but if you recall, earlier this year I asked if there were any color blind attendees at the meeting. A few members obliged and I held up a pink piece of paper and asked what they saw. They all saw black. As far as I am concerned that pretty well shot down pink camo. If you still think pink is the thing, you can wear it along with 100 sq. inches of hunter orange. Some hunters will get a kick out of a black bear or a swamp deer wearing an orange hat. We have a unique ability to influence resource management regulations in that we can talk to the NRC and the DNR directly. An opportunity that is not available with any other government agency. You may not get what you want but you will have direct contact with the decision makers. The NRC and the DNR will accommodate sound ideas where ever possible. I advise everyone to attend a NRC meeting and bring your thoughts to the table. We have too long neglected our responsibilities of watch dogging the government agencies. Government is run by those who show up and step up. Rights and freedoms are not won and held by the ignorant who don t want to be bothered. Jim De Clerck

Workin for the Pay-Off August is purt near over and some of our cowboys are about ready to head to the Wolverine Ranger s Range War/Michigan State Shoot, held over Labor Day weekend at Port Huron. They ve been practicing every Wednesday night, working towards the goal of faster times, less misses, and just wanting to give it their best shot. Also, on Saturday, August 26 th, at our match, we will be shooting some of the scenarios from the State Shoot. We ll let you know in our next month s article how everyone s hard work paid-off. One of our pards already proved that practice does pay-off. Ethan Callahan (Jerod Bell) received a First Place - Classic Cowboy category, at the Regional Guns of August event in Ohio this August. His efforts also paid off with a Clean Match and 16 th place overall, out of 187 shooters. Those of us who have ever shot this Regional know how challenging it is. Hat s off for a well-deserved win. As I ve said, our pards have put their Wednesday night practices to good use. From well-seasoned shooters to the greenhorn just starting out, we continue to improve, giving it our best shot. There s a line in the cowboy movie, Jubal, where Ernest Borgnine confronts some slow-moving workhands. You fellas move any slower, and you re gonna be doing yesterday s work. Don t you get caught sittin on that fence, missing out on a fun pay-off. Get out there and live life.give it YOUR best shot! Happy Trails from Katie Callahan Our August meeting brought in 12 women of different experience levels. Prior to going to the range, we went over the basics of safety and shooting. Afterwards we met at Sporty s for food, drink and great conversation. Please join us Sunday, September 17th at 2:00pm in the clubhouse where we ll have a short meeting and then down to the range. September will be an introduction to defensive shooting. It should be informative and fun!

by Mike Meyer Trap and skeet has been closed for two Saturdays in a row to accommodate two major archery events - the R100 and the MAA900. This made for some slow shooting in August. We hope to make up for that in September with the start of our Fall Fun Trap League. The fall fun league begins Saturday, Sept. 16, and consists of 16 rounds (400 targets) of trap to be shot before Dec. 1. The rounds may be shot whenever the league participant wishes to shoot during open shooting, however the round Must be designated a league round prior to firing the first shot. Top Gun Trophy goes to the individual shooter with the highest score. The remaining shooters will be randomly paired into two-man teams. If there is an odd number of shooters, the odd shooter s score is paired with the average of the scores of the remaining shooters. Trophies will be distributed at a league banquet. The cost to join the league is $15 to cover the expense of trophies and banquet. The following shooters broke 25 straight between July 15 th and August 15 th : Trap Trap 25 Straight 75 Straight Bill Otter - 3 Bill Otter Greg King Tom Berry Bob Moskal Fred Senni Don Seeley Skeet 25 Straight Tom Cox Use for Building Donations PLEASE FILL OUT COMPLETELY AND PRINT CLEARLY The amount of your donation $ Payment type: Check Visa MasterCard Discover Credit Card Number Expiration Date Signature Name to Appear on the Donor Display
