The print date of this newsletter coincides with elections for national, state, and local political offices. Tumultuous economic times and a volatile worldwide security environment made for a high degree of anxiety among our voters. It should be comforting to know that your Club is an island of calm and stability in this sea of uncertainty. CCCC has a positive account balance, has staged a successful statewide meet, has maintained a strong membership base, and has had some fun in the process. How could it be that my middle initial is W too! As my term of office comes to a close, I want to take these last few opportunities to thank the officers and members who have made these successes possible. Let me start with our Treasurer, Duane Schroeder, who has been able to track our membership payments with LCCI, set up and manage our Golden Girls 2008 account, and provide consistent accounting to our treasury. Second, in addition to his duties as Membership Director, Ken Kramer photographed and produced one of the most professional-looking car club calendars we have ever had. Added thanks go to the club members who volunteered and readied their cars for the photo shoots. I m sure that you ll agree that Lee Arning has been doing an excellent job as Newsletter Editor. I particularly enjoy the monthly concept car features that he has been producing. I hope that he ll be willing to stay on as Editor under new leadership. Next, I want to acknowledge our most recent activity, the Fall Fest and Car Show in Clifton, Texas. As he had last year, Terry Watson donated his time and resources to support CCCC as a sponsor of a very successful Oktoberfest in Clifton. Reports are that this year was even better than before, with many of our members staying 2 nights to be able to enjoy all the activities that were available. I have a few reminders that need your follow-up: First, please take this opportunity to purchase our 2009 Club Calendar featuring the luxurious side of our members car collections and we all know that there is no shortage of luxury in our clubs classics roster! Please see Ken Kramer or Duane Schroeder to pick up your copies they ll make excellent Holiday gifts! Second, you should have received an from LCCI reminding you that on-line membership renewal is open for 2009, and pare renewal notices will be mailed on or about November 1 st. Renewing your LCCI membership includes renewal of your membership to Classic Chassis. I urge you to do this as soon as possible renewing on-line gives you a $3 savings over mail-in renewal. 1
Third, our Annual Meeting and Elections of Officers has been scheduled for Thursday evening, November 20. Please see additional information inside this newsletter. Last, our Annual Holiday Party has been scheduled for Sunday evening, December 14 th at the Park Cities Hilton. It is important that you make reservations now so that we can confirm quantities with hotel catering. Also, please contact me or any officer with recommendations for a recipient of the Keith Lassley Award for As you may recall, this annual award goes to the club member who has made the greatest effort over the year to make our club better through bringing in new members or other volunteer activities. Please remember that club officers are not eligible. Happy Motoring! CCCC ANNUAL MEETING AND ELECTIONS Thursday, November 20, :00 pm La Madeleine Café and Bakery 3906 Lemmon Avenue Dallas, TX From David Sacha, President As provided for in our club bylaws, Classic Chassis is to hold an Annual Meeting in the month of November to conduct the official business of the club and elect officers by secret ballot. The 2008 Annual Meeting and Elections will be held on Thursday, November 20 th, 2008 at La Madeleine to discuss items pertinent to the effective management and continuance of the Club. All members are encouraged to attend and participate. You may choose to arrive a little early and order dinner from the La Madeleine order buffet. The tentative agenda is as follows: Membership Report Treasurer s Report Election of Officers by secret ballot The three offices that will be open for election this year are President, Treasurer, and Director of Membership. There are no changes to Club Bylaws anticipated which would require a vote by membership. Please contact David Sacha for additional information. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS From David Sacha, President As provided for in our club bylaws, there are three offices that will be open for election this year: President, Treasurer, and Director of Membership. Please refer to the description of the duties of each office provided in the October newsletter to consider if you would want to serve in one of these positions. Nominations opened at our October Dinner Meeting with an opportunity for candidates to speak at our November Dinner Meeting and the Annual Meeting/Election. Nominations may also be submitted to any of the officers. Elections will be held at our Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 20, Additional information on the annual meeting is provided separately. CCCC MEMBERSHIP REPORT By Ken Kramer Hello everyone, this is your friendly membership director! As my term winds down to an end, I'd like to thank everyone who's show their commitment to the club by registering early for We have had about 20 memberships renewed, and I didn't have to send any smart-ass s. As some of you may know, LCCI had a slight price increase of $2, making a primary membership now $52. or a primary/associate membership $62. These, of course, are the prices you pay if you go to to register. If you decide to pay locally with cash or a check, add $3 to the aforementioned prices. And of course, if you renew your membership during November David Sacha or December, you will be paid throughout Final cutoff for renewing memberships is, per LCCI, Feb 28, Thanks to everyone who has bought or sold copies of the 2009 Calendar. And thanks especially to all the kind words I got about the job I did on the calendar...very gratifying! That said, I would like your support as I throw my hat in the ring for Membership Director for 2009/2010. I have had a great time getting to know everyone in the club, and I look forward to maintaining our membership information, as well as producing upcoming issues of our membership roster. Happy Thoughts as we enter this festive season, Your Membership Director, Kenneth Kramer RE-CAP OF CLUB ACTIVITIES Here begins the recap of the Twentieth Golden Girls. But before all pictures, award winners, and the stories behind-the-scenes, something very important: some most deserved thank-yous! GG XX VOLUNTEERS RECOGNIZED By David Sacha As happens with most volunteer organizations, a handful of very dedicated people take on the lion s share of the work necessary to pull-off an event such as the 20 th Anniversary Golden Girls held early in October. Everyone should make an opportunity to personally thank the following members for their efforts: Tim Bunkley for taking on the responsibility of serving as Golden Girls Chairman and coordinating a very successful event, Pat Sinnott, for scheduling and coordinating our Classic Corral spot with officials of the State Fair of Texas; David Balcazo and Tom Donahue for coordinating and staging the car show and hospitality tents; Bruce Fowler and Karen Jamison for coordinating Car Show Awards, including Karen s successful effort to secure outside sponsors who donated valuable gifts to accompany the awards; Duane Schroeder who coordinated and logged our on-line and mail-in registrations and tracked event income and expenses; Bill Larkie for his assistance with registration; Jim Clark, Dave Martell and Allen Graves for helping with all of the above and set-up and knock-down of the awards event; and Jeff Conti, Paul Williams and Fred Burkle for contributing their talent and help 2
throughout the weekend with various details. Last, but, certainly not least, Terry Watson for generously opening his home and hosting our awards event. Terry meticulously decided every detail of this successful party, from the dinner to the bartenders. Terry put a lot into making it all happen and deserves our thanks. Remember, these members paid full registration fees to attend GGXX and worked throughout the weekend to make sure that everyone had the best time possible! Their efforts are greatly appreciated. TWENTIETH GOLDEN GIRLS SPONSORS RECOGNIZED It all began on Friday night at the host hotel downtown, where guests and members alike, were greeted by volunteers and one of the event s Bunk House Boys who was measuring inseams as a means of selling tickets for the 50/50 drawing. There were two versions of inseam measuring: Bunk House Boy does the measuring -or- you measure the Bunk House Boy. You can see who chose which version below (does everyone recognize the guilty parties below er make that lucky parties). I vote for doing this at every 50/50.. In addition, everyone received a gift bag with everything from a car shammie to a Hot Wheels car. Friday evening, Dallas and visiting club members all gathered for a Meet and Greet at the Round-Up Saloon. Our Club President made an announcement of Golden Girls from the dance floor at around 9 p.m. after which he had to vacate his moment in the spotlight to allow the dancers to take back the dance floor. Bright and early Saturday morning, 41 entries spanning over 55 years in age from 1941 to 1997, and from MG Midgets to Cadillac Fleetwoods, began arriving at the State Fair Grounds to crowd into the Classic Corral. The cars were parked according to their decade of manufacture, each exceptionally represented. The parking arrangement differed for pickups, station wagons, and foreign cars which were grouped, regardless of their decade. The Golden Girls Festivities By David Sacha, Lee Arning, & Pat Sinnot Howdy Folks! The 20 th Anniversary Golden Girls event drew 74 participants from around the state and beyond, from as far away as the Saint Louis Region. We had a small issue with another car club that wanted to take our large corral (!), and thank goodness we got it straightened out, as we had an overflow of cars displayed onto the adjacent grassy area. Another member reported that the Cadillac LaSalle 3
club came to CCCC asking that we put some of our Cadillacs in their corral to help fill it up, as they only had six cars in their coral show. Golden Girls participants had the entire day to look at all of the entrants before deciding how they d vote in selecting the award winners. Speaking of which, here are the award winners: GG XX AWARDS ANNOUNCED By David Sacha, Awards Program Chair Please join me in congratulating the following owners and their fabulous classics in the following Award categories: Pre-WW II 1949 First Place 1948 Packard Custom 8 Robert Trost/Earl Whiteoak - Dallas Best of Class 1941 Cadillac Fleetwood 60 Special Robert Trost/Earl Whiteoak - Dallas First Place in the Class: 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville - Rick Payton -Austin First Place 1962 Cadillac Fleetwood John Hopper/Bruno Hernandez - Houston Best of Class 1965 Buick Electra Art Darr/Gerald Albrecht Dallas First Place 1985 Cadillac Eldorado Biaritz Convertible James Pate/Page Strickland Houston Best of Class Buick Riviera James Pate/Page Strickland Houston 1990 Present First Place 1990 Oldsmobile 98 touring Sedan Rick Ballard/Mark Lewis Dallas Best of Class 1997 Oldsmobile Aurora Sedan Edmund Rader Austin Station Wagons First Place 1964 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser Duane Schroeder Dallas Best of Class 1972 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser Bill Larkie Dallas Commercial / Light Trucks First Place 1997 Doge Ram 1500 Bruce Fowler Dallas Best of Class 1973 Chevrolet Pick-up Tom Welch Dallas Foreign First Place 1979 MG Midget Bryan Howell Dallas Best of Class 1986 Alfa Graduate Jim Dees/Tim Bunkley Special Recognition Awards: Esplanade Award for Best Display 1957 Lincoln Premier Lane Eaves Dallas Midway Award for Diamond in the Rough 1959 Pontiac Star Chief Karen Jamison Dallas First Place among the s: 1976 Oldsmobile 98 Regency Fred Burkle Dallas Best of Class 1979 Cadillac Eldorado Bruce Guthrie/Alan Clark Dallas Hall of State Award for Best Original Condition: 1965 Thunderbird Convertible -Bruce Walter -Dallas Texas Star Award for Best Paint 1979 Cadillac Eldorado Bruce Guthrie/Alan Clark Dallas 4
Exposition Award for Most Valuable Volunteer Tim Bunkley Dallas Best of Show Award and Best in Class and Cotton Bowl Award for Best Interior : 1957 Imperial Convertible -Ed Lavelle/Michael McCabe Dallas That brought evening another exceptional experience. But it didn t happen by magic: these folks had a lot to do with it. "Cowgirl Bette Walker" (Terry's Mom) and "Coral Boss Peggy Berry", the party planner are busy at work here. And to the left, you ll see the Bunk House Madam himself, Terry Watson, as he builds and decorates the bar that many of us spent a good amount of time visiting! The 100 guests attending dinner were picked up in vintage convertibles in either Bill Larkey s 70 Cadillac, Terry Watson s 55 Eldorado, Pat Sinnot s 66 Cadillac, or James Gudat s 66 Lincoln Continental and chauffeured by James, Jim Clark, Allen Graves or Jeff Conti to Terry Watson s home where they were greeted in the driveway by the very hunky Sheriff, David Garber. As you looked around the driveway, you noticed an authentic 1800s medicine wagon out front, along with western vignettes depicting everything from the Marshal with his shot gun by the front door ( to keep the rustlers out ) to a card-game-gone-wrong among cowboys, out back. From the bar, to the table decorations, to the lights (in trees, spotlighting the vignettes, and in cacti) to the live western music provided by the Linda Petty Band... and topped by the great BBQ food from Sweet s Catering. Gang, there just isn t enough space in the newsletter to accurately cover that wonderful event this was (oh, and we ve got the evidence, uh, I mean pictures/video, so no whitewashing the truth!). NOVEMBER ACTIVITIES Event #1: SERIOUSLY: DON T MISS THIS! Tour the Sam Pack Collection (he a local Ford Dealer, but it s not all Fords). This is 156 cars including Buddy Holly s girlfriend s '57 Chevy (Peggy Sue, yes, of the 50 s song), and a 53 Jaguar that belong to Lauren Becall. It takes place on Tuesday November 11th, at 6:30pm. This is estimated to be about a $5M collection, and certainly one of the best in Texas. Tim Bunkley and I have been working on getting this tour for CCCC members for over four years. You will be asked to make a $10 donation to the Rotary Club. Event #2: The Kruse - Leake Classic Car auction will be taking place November at Market Hall in Dallas. This is our traditional November activity. Club members meet on Saturday November 22nd at 9:00 for breakfast at The Original Market Diner on Harry Hines, and then head over to Market Hall for the fun and the flash. This year there are 600 cars expected. Here is a link to the website for more information: DECEMBER ACTIVITIES Classic Chassis Dallas has scheduled the Ballroom of the Park Cities Hilton for this year s Annual Holiday Party. Price per member/associate member is $25 and $30 for guests. Valet parking is available at $8; self-parking is available at $5. Attire is Holiday Festive. Reservations must be pre-paid so that we can confirm the correct number of dinners with the hotel catering. Reservations will be taken by the Club Treasurer, Duane Schroeder. You can mail your reservation and payment to our Club address up until November 30, Please print and use the reservation form below. The evening includes a social hour with cash bar followed by a three-course served meal. As has become a tradition, we will have a 5
silent auction, door prizes, and a gift exchange (car-related items encouraged) bring a wrapped gift, approximately $25.00 in value, to participate in the gift exchange. We will have door prizes and a silent auction. This will also be one of your last chances to purchase our 2009 Club Calendar for your holiday gift-giving! That s David Balcazo/Tom Donahue s 73 Rivera in the foreground, and George Haynes Second Place (Muscle Car Class), award winning, 72 Olds Cutlass in the background. Detach below and mail with payment HOLIDAY PARTY RESERVATION FORM PARK CITIES HILTON BALLROOM SUNDAY, DECEMBER 14, :30 PM MEMBER/ASSOCIATE MEMBER(S): (# $25 = Bill Allen's '41 Packard 120 Convertible took 1st Place in the GUEST(S): 'Classic Class'. (# $30 = TOTAL AMOUNT ENCLOSED: MAIL FORM BY NOVEMBER 30, 2008 TO: Classic Chassis Car Club Dallas PO BOX DALLAS, TX December is our Christmas light driving tour and our Christmas party. If you have suggestions for neighborhoods to tour, please send them to Pat Sinnott (patsinnott@sbcglobal.net). We normally tour the Park Cities, and it might be nice to drive a different route (Swiss Avenue, Lakewood, White Rock) if someone knows an area where there are some good light displays. James Gudat really had a beautiful showing with the 'Scotty' trailer that matches (literally) the '63 Rambler wagon. It really drew a crowd, but it seems that the show goers with a healthy posterior end couldn't quite fit through door of the trailer to look inside watch Mad Men and you ll know the 60 s were about drinking and cigarettes, that s why the trailer door is narrrow! RE CAP OF CLUB EVENTS PART 2 Fall Fest in Clifton, TX was another CCCC event in October. Unfortunately, there s not much space in this newsletter to adequately describe this event, but these photos will give you the highlights in pictures (which is better than words anyway).
