What we lacked in Cuatro Estados attendees was more than made up for by being surrounded by hundreds of other campers and music lovers from all over the country. First off, you can t beat the setting: in a beautiful high valley (8K altitude) with the Sangre de Cristo 2

3 Mountains (at 13-14K ft) on one side, and the Wet Mountains on the other. Add a lovely little village town with interesting shops and good eateries within easy walking distance. Mix in some of the friendliest people you d ever want to meet (local folks and all the out-of-towners). Top it off with non-stop music from dozens of different groups, from 10 am to 10 pm each day amazing entertainment with lots of comedy too. Polish it off with the surprise of afternoon showers. And there you have our rally! Attending were Varleys (our rallymasters), Phillips, and Feltners. And the surprise of Coulters stopping for a couple of nights. Our dry-camping spot was an easy stroll from the main tent where the main stage was located. (And only $10 for the whole festival!) Vendor booths were dominated by some really great foodie choices (fell in love with some better-than-new-mexico green chile!), promo t-shirts & other clothing, entertainers media sales, and local organizations. And no matter where you went in town, you could always hear the great music echoing out across the land. If we tired of all that, there were great hiking trails in the nearby mountains, the crazy Bishop s Castle about a half hour away, local historical landmarks & museums, and an Amish Community in the area. (Amish note: We d seen it mentioned on Facebook, but saw it here: the latest seating in the Amish buggies is used car seats! Gotta be a lot more comfortable than those wood benches )!! We managed to fit in some version of happy hour nearly every night, one decent campfire (that didn t get rained out), a fun time at a local Rum Distillery (complete with tastings and then some), and dinner out. Thanks, Englemans, for suggesting this idea. Thanks Becky Coulter for putting it on the schedule. And thanks Steve and Sandy Varley for being rallymasters! (See photos of the rally on our Facebook site!) September Rally Canyon de Chelly and Monument Valley 9/22 Arrive Canyon de Chelly, Arizona. Directions: from Chinle, AZ, from the junction of Hwy 191 and Route 7, go E. 2.5 miles on Rt. 7 to visitor center; follow signs. No reservations, but it's a good-sized campground and we should be fine on a weeknight in mid- 3

4 September. 9/23: Drive around canyon rim; numerous viewpoints. 9/24: take a native-american-led tour of the valley (you're not allowed to go on your own). There are a number of tour options; cost should be in the neighborhood of $100 per person or you can opt not to tour. 9/24 late afternoon: move on to Monument Valley, Utah, to Goulding's Resort; full hookups and a very nice park. Several tour options (all day/half day); you may also drive your own vehicle into the valley. Restaurant at Goulding's; another at the Navajo center a couple of miles away. Also a native craft market nearby and a grocery nearby. Reservations at Gouldings: and tell them you're with the Cuatro Estados group; you may have to give them our name as well. Then PLEASE call and let us know you're coming! or (cells) or Dessa and Franklin Halasz P.S. We haven't heard from any Cuatros members! July 22 is real close please let us know if you're even thinking of coming. F&D Rocky Mountain Regional Ramble in Farmington FMCA is sponsoring the Rocky Mountain Regional Ramble in Farmington, NM Sept 29th through October 3. I was wondering if anyone was willing to be the coordinator for our chapter? See flyer below. It is not a difficult task. All it entails is knowing which chapter members will be attending, setting up a meeting place (usually at someone s RV) for a happy hour or group dinner out. If our members want to volunteer to work you can volunteer according to your own interest in a certain activity. We will not be volunteering as a chapter. Volunteering is a good way to get to know what is going on, meet people, help out and have fun. Volunteers can work in area security, transportation (driving trams), assisting with classes and many other activities. We still need a few members to sit at a table during the Chapter fair and talk to FMCA members about joining our Chapter and pass out information (2015 rally schedule or 2016 rally schedule if available from Genny Zawistoski) or display our website or pictures on a laptop computer. Lynn Buckingham has our chapters promotional materials and will be willing to assist. She was the coordinator last year. In case you didn't get the from Region I regarding the Ramble in Farmington, I have attached it. If you plan on going please let me know. If you are going and wouldn't mind coordinating this effort, otherwise known as herding some CE Cats, let me know that also. Thanks, Becky Coulter 4

5 ! Ma From Jack Mayberry - Senior VP The registration form for the 2015 Ramble is now on the RMMA web site. You should also be able to register online with the FMCA web site. We have finalized our entertainment and schedule and are looking for exciting times with all of you. Some Regional VP s are planning regional rallies. These are great ways to meet other members in your area and provide a venue for sharing ideas from your chapter. Watch the RMMA web site for more information. Publishing your newsletter and schedule on our web site helps us know what is happening within the region and allows us to schedule visits. We will be beginning our summer travels soon attending rallies across the country. If you are going to be in Madison, please let us know so we can look you up. If you are unable to attend I hope you can make the Rocky Mountain Ramble. Safe travels until we meet again DON'T MISS OUT Bosque del Apache Rally Birdwatchers RV Park November The main focus for this rally will be seeing the Sandhill Cranes, Snow and Ross s Geese and other wildlife present in the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in November. For those who have never been here before, it is located south of San Antonio, NM which is about half way between Albuquerque and Las Cruces. Sandhill Cranes, Ross s Geese and Snow Geese winter here by the 5

6 thousands in small ponds and fields on the Refuge. One of the highlights of the Refuge is to visit the ponds at sunrise and sunset when you can view these wonderful birds flying in and flying out of the small ponds in huge numbers. They use the ponds for protection while they are roosting and they use the fields for feeding. The Refuge also has a large variety of waterfowl, raptors, shore birds, song birds, etc. The bird list is amazing for the Refuge. We also have a chance to seeing a Bobcat or some other predatory animal looking for a meal. I spoke with Bill Trujillo, the owner of Birdwatchers RV Park. He used to run the park with his mother but she is now living in Salt Lake City so he is operating it by himself. He is also trying to sell the park. He said he would hold 15 sites for Cuatro Estados for our rally dates and they will be held for us even if he does sell the park. He would prefer to just deal with the rally masters and not make separate reservations for everyone who is planning to come to the rally. SO, if you are planning to attend this rally, please get in touch with us and we will stay in contact with Birdwatchers RV Park as our plans develop. You will just pay for your site when you arrive. We are traveling in the Maritime Provinces of Canada for the entire summer and we will not have our normal Verizon internet service. We will have telephone service wherever a Verizon signal is available to us. SO, it is best to either us at englemanbarry@gmail.com or jcengleman@yahoo.com or call us at If we don t answer, please leave a message to let us know you plan to attend and the exact dates you would like a site at Birdwatchers RV Park. The rally dates are November The Festival of the Cranes at Bosque del Apache begins the last day of the rally and goes until the 22nd (November 17-22). You may want to stay after the rally is over for all or part of this festival. if you do, please let us know so we can reserve extra time at Birdwatchers for you. We are not going to post a rally schedule at this time. Again, the main focus will be seeing the birds, especially at dawn and dusk each day when they are visible flying in and out of the ponds. We will spend at least one day visiting the other areas in Bosque del Apache during the daylight hours. Since many of us have been here multiple times, we will plan other excursions when everyone gets there the first night. Plan on a least three pot luck get togethers weather permitting. 6

The beauty and the generosity of the people astound us at every turn. We won t mention the COLD, WET weather. An unexpected rendezvous occurred just as the Englemans and Beckers pulled into the Pippy Park Campground in St John s (the capital Newfoundland). A Winnebago caravan was packing up to depart. Members of the caravan were Mike Rozdilsky and MJ Brenner. Mike was even wearing his CE shirt. And this only 3,660 road mules from The Four Corners. 7

9 NOTE: Last month we included an article about the the Interstate Highway System. This month we have an article about the older and generally more interesting U.S. Highway System Historic US Route 20 & the United States Highway System Stretching from just west of the Atlantic Ocean in Boston,MA - through 12 States to the Pacific Ocean at Newport, OR, US Route 20 is the longest US Highway in the country at 3,365 miles.!! Newspaper article from the Boston Globe, Jan 15, 1922, detailing the Federal Highway Act of The Federal Highway Act of 1921 The history of US Route 20 starts with the passing of the Federal Highway Act of This act appropriated $75 million for road construction through out the country. The Act stated that the money "spent in cooperation with the States sand that to obtain any part of it, a given State shall provide a sum at least equal to that secured from the Federal Government. Any State, to procure its share of Federal money, must establish a 'State Highway Department' satisfactory to the Federal Government. This state agency and the Federal Government many cooperate in the building of roads not to exceed 7 percent of the total highway mileage of that State" The road building continued and improvements were made. During this time, several States created their own highway designations, while private businesses were springing up as "Road Organizations promoting "Trail" routes. The Joint Board on Interstate Highways As the 1921 Act gave money for the State's to build and improve highways across the country it had become increasingly clear that there had become a non uniform system of various markers, Auto Routes and signs, at times, overlapping each other, that aided in confusion for the traveling motorist. The plan was to standardize a whole highway system so that drivers could travel from one coast to another, or even within a specific region of the country and simply follow a numbered highway. - April 20-21, 1925 Creation The Joint Board on Interstate Highways met on April 20-21, 1925 and in their first meeting agreed to create a group of highways, that would be known and United States Highways. The board designated that a series of regional meetings of public works and highway officials would designate which roads should be designated as a US Highway. Also during this meeting the board adopted the policy of the American Association of 9

10 State Highway Officials to allow already existent highway trail associations to continue their activities and to be recognized only if their policies and activities did not interfere or conflict with State or Federal policies following the creation of the US Highways system. Throughout May and June the various regions consisting of highway officials met and decided on what routes, already in existence, they felt would be designated as a US Highway. The general consensus was to expand and take into consideration the 1922 New England Interstate Highway Plan which used numbers in an increasing order starting in the north and east and working westward. The roads that would become US Route 20 were officially designated in the meetings in Boston / New England - June 18 The states however needed to wait until all the regions met in Washington in August to officially begin designating highways in their regions. - August 3-5, 1925 Selection The Joint Board on Interstate Highways convened again after each region had selected their routes to adopt, connect, number and map out the routes for which had been chosen. The first day of meetings on August 3, 1925 was a preliminary review session. The second day saw the adoption of the US Route Shield. This shield was modeled after the shield of the United States. More information on the shield history itself can be found here.! Original shield designs from On August 5, 50,000 miles of highway were selected to become US Highways and be numbered and signed with the uniform markers picked the previous day. It was decided that the final numbering system would be delegated to sub-committees and voted upon at a later date - November 18, 1925 Route Numbers Assigned On November 18, 1925,the Joint Board issued its approval of the complete preliminary United States Highway System. The states could still make suggestions or ask for any changes until a final approval would be ready the following year. - November 11, 1926 The Official Birth the United States Highway System 10

11 ! The final map of the US Highway System as it was announced on November 11, January 1, 1927 The Final Approval The announcement came on January 1, 1927, that all the States along with the Federal Government had approved the layout of the United States Highway System. 11
