2 Director s Notes What a great month we had in September! From the Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon (EVH contributed over $70,000), the ride to Husker House in Columbus, our 6 th Annual Day of the Hog Volunteer Picnic, to the annual cookie run, it was just fantastic. If you could not find any thing to do with us in September, you must have been really busy. Now that Fall is upon us, get ready for lower temperatures and some beautiful fall rides. So, let s break out the leathers and enjoy some rides before winter arrives. For a great all-day event, Bob has planned an awesome ride through Loss Hills this month that is just fantastic and will be even more beautiful if the leaves are changing! You should try and make this one if at all possible. This fall will also bring our summer mileage contest to a close, so be sure to ride your motorcycle to this month s meeting to get your mileage read to qualify for a patch and some prizes. Our road captains will be watching for your arrival to record your mileage. You should also begin planning your costume for this year s Hogoween party at the Welcherts. If last year was any indication, the competition for best costume will be a lot of fun. Although costumes are not required, they certainly add to the festivities and fun. The Welcherts are fantastic hosts and you ll not find a better Halloween party around. So join us if you can. All the gory details can be found in this newsletter. Finally, in order to provide more space for our growing membership, we have changed our meeting location to the Keno Cabana in Bennington, beginning with October s chapter meeting. However, we d like to once again acknowledge and thank Gene at the Delta House for coming to our rescue when Thunder Alley closed down. We all enjoyed your hospitality, you are the MAN! I hope you all can find some of our activities to fit into your schedule this month,..so ride safe, ride often, and have fun.! Cecil

5 Ladies of Harley I would like to extend my thank you to all of you who participated in the annual LOH Cookie Run on September 19 th. Thanks to your fantastic baking we were able to put together 10 baskets and distribute to nine Omaha Fire Stations and the Omaha Motor Patrol (who you remember were kind enough to provide an escort to our first DOTH parade!). Imagine their confusion when 14 Harley motorcycles, one mini-van and a smart car pulled up in their parking lots. This caravan of caring members of our chapter delivered a very uplifting message to the men and women who put their lives on the line everyday THANK YOU!! The responses from the individual fire fighters were overwhelmingly filled with gratitude and heart felt thanks for the outpouring of kindness. Darin and Derek were real troopers following this group of bikers. Derek was our resident celebrity at every fire station. Apparently you do not want to play video game with this young man regardless of your age he is a real winner! Pat also found her kindred spirit in a 6 2 muscularly built firefighter who also drove a smart car! It was a beautiful day for a ride and the fantastic lunch at the Millard Roadhouse was just the icing on the cake. Don t forget our next LOH event will be held at the Vala s Pumpkin Patch on October 17 th.. Due to the gravel roads, potential weather conditions, and unpaved parking lot we will not have a formal ride to this event. There is a cost to enter the pumpkin patch and you are welcome to come at any time. We have a tent and fire pits reserved from 5:30 10:00. You are welcome to bring in any type of food or non-alcoholic drink that can be shared with the group. Due to the variety of schedules, we will all plan to gather around the fire at 7:00pm for a good ol fashion wiener roast and S mores. The pumpkin patch offers a variety of activities for all ages. You can watch them launch pumpkins, cheer for your favorite pig in the pig races, walk through the haunted house, take a hay rack ride around the grounds, pick out your own pumpkin, experience black light mini golf, take a ride on the train, and enjoy absolutely delicious food. Even though we have the tent reserved for 5:30pm you may want to come early and enjoy some of these activities while it is still light. Some words to the wise regarding the pumpkin patch visit: Bring flashlights, lanterns, or other light sources Bring extra layers of clothing as it tends to cool off in the evening Vala s offers push carts you can use to carry in (and out) your goodies There are no alcoholic beverages allowed Please join us for this spooktacular activity!!

6 Safety First! 88 Feet Can Make A Difference Traveling at 60 MPH you travel approximately 88 feet a second. If your reaction time is increased by just one second you will stop 88 feet sooner. That one second might be accomplished by covering the brake in a dangerous or suspicious moment. Being prepared to stop at any given moment can make a big difference. It is the time of year when the hunters and farmers are in the fields moving the deer and other animals toward the roads. This will continue over the next few months. The deer crossing signs are placed by the highway department based on the number of carcasses found at any one location. This is why we see a new sign once in awhile during our travels. I especially like the ones where some one has painted the nose red. When we get out west we have the antelope, elk and moose crossings too. The warning signs announcing the curves with slower speed limits are sometimes another moment we need to take extra caution. Traveling at 88 feet a second we can approach the slow moving farm machinery on the highway very quickly. We have all heard of an incident where some one has come up over a hill to find a slow moving vehicle turning out onto the highway. We have had quite a number of our chapter members involved in accidents this year, ranging from hitting deer, vehicles stopping abruptly in front of us, vehicles crossing or pulling out in front of us, just to name a few. Trying to fit a quick ride in after supper or go for a dinner ride this time of year can come with some challenges. We are coming into the time of year when the sunsets are lining up with those east and west roads. The sun in some ones eyes of the vehicle can make it difficult for the vehicles or us to see. Some one setting at an intersection traveling north or south looking to the west at that certain time of day can cause a major blind spot. The same would be in the morning for sunrise. Let s approach those intersections prepared. If the weather is good we all like to ride. The longer the riding season the more rides we plan. Stopping 88 feet sooner can make a difference. Covering a brake in certain circumstances and staying alert at all times can make a difference. Ride And Have Fun Your Safety Officer Ace Stahlnecker

I hope everyone was able to get out and enjoy some of the activities that I planned for the summer. I was unable to get to do much of anything during the months of June, July, and August, but I ve managed to start getting some miles behind me as of late. Maybe we ll luck out with Indian Summer weather this fall. There are many more activities coming in the month of October, and the calendar will soon be updated with activities for November and December as well so keep your eyes open for updates on the website. Clint

12 Day of the Hog 2010 Day of the Hog Happy October to my E V H.O.G. Chapter Family! As the football season starts up and, unfortunately, the riding season is winding down you may be wondering on how you can fill those idle hours? At the officers meeting, I was honored with being named the Committee Chair for the 2010 Day of the HOG fund raiser for MDA. Now is the time to put our collective minds together to start planning another great event for DOTH to help the MDA help those affected by this disease. November 2 (where and time will be announced on the message board) there will be a meeting for those who wish to serve on the committee. I have already been approached by Chapter Members volunteering their time and skills. I want to thank them for their excitement and dedication to this event. With that being said, don t let that stop you from attending the meeting there is plenty of work and fun to go around for those who wish to help.. Please give this some serious thought. If not on a committee, you can help as a volunteer when the announcement goes out for volunteers to work the event. Yes, you might not be able to participate in some of the activities if you are a volunteer, so what is in it for you? HOPE!! Not yours, but for the families affected by Muscular Dystrophy. If you don t believe we bring hope to these families, please read the letters and notes posted on our web site by some of the families we help! So in closing I have included a quote from Christopher Reeves before his death. Once you choose hope, anything's possible. Keep the shiny side up! Kevin
