CITY OF WALL: Mayor Marty Huether gave Kudo s to the Wall Volunteer Fire Department for the nice job they did with the fireworks show, and also to the Chamber s Celebration Committee for the great work they did in putting on the Wall Celebration this past weekend. Both events had a great turnout! SCHOOL REPORT: Cooper Garnos let us know that the Concessions building should be done in November. During the summer teachers are attending conferences and workshops. The school encourages teachers & students to stay engaged. They appreciate the activities that go on in the community and that resources, like the local library are used. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: Cheyenne McGriff wanted to thank the Celebration Committee and the Rodeo Booster Club for doing such a great job, especially Dawn Hilgenkamp, Donna Curr & Mary Williams for taking care of the Rodeo. The opportunity to promote wall was done with KEVN doing their Six program all about Wall. Interviews were given live during the show from Wall, including the Mayor, Marty Huether, Dan Curr for the Rodeo Booster Club, and Cheyenne McGriff with Economic Development. An earlier taped interview with Cindy Schuler, Chamber Director, noting Wall isn t just about tourism, but agriculture as well. The Housing study is done and a meeting will take place on the 12 th with board members, and a community meeting will be scheduled at a later time. June 30 th a meeting was held with South Dakota Center for Enterprise Opportunities. They offered to help put on business development classes for things such as social media, quick books, and a variety of others. A few business owners were able to attend as well. A few updates on events: Farmers Market did not get started and will be having a meeting. Archery Event, Friday 7/29 from 5-7pm. The equipment for the youth will provided by SD Game, Fish & Parks. Scheels, has donated gift certificates and a target. Ec Dev is working on Coffee and Calendars and a Fall Festival with the Chamber. Badlands Bad River will be meeting around 5pm on July 27th at the Golf Course and following that they will hold a social media training. BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK: Mike Pflaum reported that their events are going well. They had three nights of astronomy, the Black Hills Raptor Center will be bringing birds out to see. Book sales and concessions are up 15%. Four (4) public meetings will be held around the area (Rapid City, Wall, and Interior & Pine Ridge) to get input on the Bison Plan & Environmental Assessment which explores options to expand the current bison range within the North Unit of the park. The plan is available for review online. Comments should be received by August 12, 2016 to be considered in the plan. August 25 th is the actual birthday of the park. They will be celebrating with cake and activities including entertainment from Brule on August 27 th in the Badlands Amphitheatre. MINUTEMAN MISSILE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE: (as submitter by Eric Leonard, Cindy Shuler reported) Our June visitation was 26,616. For some perspective, our total year-to-date visitation at the end of June 2015 was 26,480. So, needless to say we remain very busy this summer. The completed exhibits have made a real difference in the visitor experience here. September 24 th is the date of the Grand Opening of MMNHS. They have invited the Director of the Park Service to attend with other dignitaries. FOREST SERVICE: Kurt Pindel reported that part of Nebraska has already started fire restrictions due to such dry conditions. There have been four fires in the Grasslands just in the Wall area. A possible Stage I Fire Restriction will be implemented, which means no open fires, campfire or stove fire including BBQ s and grills. Chain saws will need spark arrestors, cigarettes will only be allowed INSIDE a vehicle or building. It can increase to Stage III which would also include no ATV Off-Roading after 10pm. Kathleen Hansen with NGVC reported that visitation is up at least 20% from last year. They are trying to do more outreach, with the Jr Ranger program happening as well as many other events during Celebration they were asking for help on the oral research project about the Grasslands. They are asking people who grew up in this area to share stories of what it was like so it could be recorded for future generations. They are also asking if you know somebody who could help, please refer them, so their stories be recorded in history. 2
3 minutes continued from page 2 GOLDEN WEST: Jody Bielmaier mentioned that Golden West is also celebrating their 100 th Anniversary, and is making stops all across the region in SD. They are using interactive technology and showing people how much has changed over the years. Along with the stops they are serving hot dogs to customers and have no doubt that they all like hot dogs as they served over 800 in Freeman, SD alone! Next stop is Winner, SD and the last stop will end up in Wall at the annual meeting on Sept 24 th. Golden West also gives out $45,000 in scholarships for high school seniors across the state. The 2016 winner in Wall was David Sykora. WEST RIVER ELECTRIC: Dick Johnson shared that WREA is only 76 years young, so they have a ways yet to get to 100! There is a position open for a Director on the Board. The nominating committee met, and have chosen Dan Hauk and Terry Peters. When opened to the floor, Amanda Frink had put her name into the selection as well. There has been a rate increase (approx. $5-$6) the WREA will try to absorb that cost if they can, however they may have to pass a little bit of that on. There was damage in the north end of the territory that they need to take care of as well. WALL LIBRARY: as submitted by Theresa Schaefer & reported by Cindy Schuler; summer reading is still the main event at the library this month. We are so proud of all the great readers who are participating in the Summer Reading Challenge. More than sixty young people and sixteen adults have signed up. Friday morning story times have been packed houses, and the prize entry jar is filling up fast, as reading logs are turned in. The high school sports stars who have been guest readers have made the story times really fun, and are wonderful examples for all the youngsters. We are very grateful for such an enthusiastic and supportive community. Visitors have also been keeping us on our toes, with fifteen or twenty stopping in some days. They bring all kinds of requests. The library is their source for directions, free Wi-Fi, computer and printer help, weather updates, restaurant and campground information, a place to relax and read while the rest of the family shops... and the closest restroom to the camper and truck parking lot! RODEO BOOSTER CLUB: Mary Williams gave an update on the rodeo s that have taken place. The 4H rodeo had 158 contestants and when you figure each contestant will bring approximately five people in (mom, dad, siblings, relatives, fiends etc.) that makes an additional 790 people! Celebration had 380 contestants with the Thursday thru Saturday rodeo. Thank you to the sixty-five volunteers and a special thank you to the Wall Fire Dept. for wetting down the arena, the City of Wall Public Works for cleaning up, trimming and spraying for mosquitoes, the Wall Ambulance for medical assistance when needed, the Grand Entry veterans who represented all the branches of the military and to all of the sponsors who helped to promote the rodeo. A total of 16 student athletes participated in the state competition, with four of those going on to National s. (Carter Elshere, Cash Wilson, Emilee Pauley & Savannah Johnston) Golden West was the winner of the Business Men s Cowhide Race during Celebration. Play days will be next meeting on Thursdays with about forty families involved. BLACK HILLS FEDERAL CREDIT UNION: Wendy Allison shared that a BHFCU New Member Service Center is now located in Sturgis. Renovations are happening at the corporate office in Rapid City, and they should be at the new Downtown Service Center by the end of summer. They are starting to collect donations for school supply drive. All donations collected stay in Wall. CELEBRATION COMMITTEE: Chair, Wendy Allison, thanked all the volunteers for a successful 2016 Celebration. Without the help of all of them, they would not be able to put it all together. A special thanks to the WVFD for the hot dog feed, The Rodeo Booster Club, the Drug Store for all the ice they donated and everybody who attended. A special shout out to the Forest Service as it was overheard that a visitor was very excited to be able to see all the different kinds of grasses. The committee was excited to have KEVN do their whole news segment about Wall. No Old or New Business presented. NOTE: There is no August meeting. The September meeting will be at the Badlands Saloon & Grille on Monday the 12 th, at 12 noon. Meeting adjourned Customer Service Quote of the Month Customers don t expect you to be perfect.
