If your dog is missing one of the first places to check is your local animal shelter. Pesterfield got the car stopped on Petite Street, he said, and Russell said he fled because he knew he had no driver s license and was about to go to jail and all he wanted was to get out of the area. The E-911 dispatch confirmed Russell as a habitual motor vehicle offender. A strong odor of marijuana appeared to be rising from Russell, but a search of the car found nothing, and while waiting for the jail gate to open, Pesterfield found the aroma was still prevalent, he said. Inside the jail, officers also detected the peppery fragrance as present in the air. The source at last came to light, so to speak, when a jail search of Russell discovered a baggy of illegal guano herb inside his boxer shorts. NOW OPEN! Many of these locations have rough dirt/gravel roads leading to them with limited access, parking, and crowd capacity as well as, restricted traffic flow and no sanitation facilities or water. National forest visitors should expect many locations to be heavily visited with traffic delays and congestion. Forest Service management for the eclipse is focused on public safety and protecting the natural and cultural resources. Management measures have been developed for certain potential eclipse viewing locations in the Tellico and Ocoee Ranger Districts. This information is intended to provide an overview of what visitors can expect to find at various locations regarding access, parking and traffic, any restrictions, and if the location offers any amenities. TELLICO RANGER DISTRICT : Cherohala Skyway: Monroe County, Elevation The Cherohala Skyway crosses through the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee (State Route 165) and the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina (State Route 143.) It is a paved two lane highway leading from Tellico Plains to Robbinsville, NC. TN 165 Tennessee There are several overlooks/pullouts along the Skyway with limited parking. There is no camping on or within 300 of the Skyway; parking along the Skyway is limited; poor cell service; no potable water; limited toilet facilities; turn around and parking opportunities are limited. Expect heavy traffic and congestion with delays along the Skyway and throughout the area. Indian Boundary Recreation Area: Monroe County, Elevation 2,000. In Tellico Plains, turn left on TN 165 (Cherohala Skyway) for approximately 17 miles. Turn left onto NFSR 345, or National Forest System Road, and follow signs in to Indian Boundary Recreation Area. Expect significant visitation and heavy traffic and congestion throughout the area. Campground All campsites on the reservation system are booked for the weekend of the eclipse. There are approximately 30 sites in the over flow area available on a first come first served basis. Day Use Area - Day use facilities include a 96-acre lake, swim beach, bathhouse, potable water, small boat launch, accessible fishing pier and a trail around the lake. Parking along NFSR 126-Bald River Road is limited; Holy Flats Campground is located approximately 2 miles east on NFSR 126. Whigg Meadow: Monroe County, Elevation 5,000. Walk in access only. No potable water; limited toilet facilities; poor cell service. From August Whig Meadow will be closed to motorized vehicle access. Due to the potential for a large number of people to visit this area it is necessary to restrict motorized vehicle access for public health and safety concerns. NFSR 61 leading to the site is a rough and narrow single lane gravel/dirt road with few turnouts. Parking is limited and traffic on the Skyway is expected to be heavy and congested. 2) NFSR 61 which leads to Whigg Meadow will be closed to motorized vehicles where it begins at NFSR North River Road. The walk in from NFSR 217 via NFSR 61 is approximately 3.6 miles to Whigg Meadow. Parking on NFSR 217 is limited. Doc Rogers Fields: Monroe County, Elevation 1,600. Trailhead for the Unicoi Mountain Trail. This area is located just off State Hwy. 68 and the Joe Brown Highway near Coker Creek. The area will be closed to camping from August Dayuse and trail use are allowed. Beaverdam THE Bald: Monroe County, Elevation 4,000. Walk in only access only from August NFSR 24, or Beaverdam Bald Road, leading to Beaverdam Bald will be closed to motorized vehicles. The walk to the site is approximately 4 miles via NFSR 24. No potable water; no toilets; limited parking along roads; dispersed camping allowed in general forest area unless posted otherwise; trails in the area leading to the site will be open. OCOEE RANGER DISTRICT : Buck Bald: Polk County, Elevation 2,300. This site is accessible via NFSR 311 off State Route 68 approximately 14 miles south of Tellico Plains. Cell service at top of mountain, spotty elsewhere; no potable water, no toilet facilities; recommended access via Bullet Creek Road which is accessible off State Route 315, turn onto County Road 633 about 8 miles north of Reliance and 7 miles south of Jalapa; County Road 633 leads into NFSR 44 which is a rough dirt/gravel road with few turnouts - high clearance vehicles recommended; dispersed camping allowed in general forest area unless posted otherwise. Chilhowee Mountain: Polk County, Elevation 2,100. GPS coordinates may direct you up County Road 100, Benton Springs Road, where trailers, buses, RV s and large vehicles are prohibited, high clearance vehicles recommended. Best access is via NFSR 77, Ocoee Scenic Byway, to reach the recreation area. Chilhowee Recreation Area is located off NFSR 77, Oswald Dome Road, near the top of the mountain. From U.S. Highway 64 turn onto NFSR 77 near the Ocoee Ranger Station, drive 7.5 miles up the mountain to the recreation area. Cell service is poor. NFSR 77 Ocoee Scenic Byway: This narrow two-lane paved road winds its way from U.S. Highway 64 to the top of Chilhowee Mountain. No potable water and limited toilet facilities along NFSR 77; limited parking along road; there are several overlooks with limited parking space; no camping within 300 of NFSR 77 from HWY 64 to the recreation area; expect heavy traffic and congestion. Chilhowee Recreation Area: All campsites that are on the reservation system are booked for the weekend of the eclipse. There are 15 tent camping sites in the over flow area available on a first come first served basis. Other campgrounds in the general area that are also booked for the eclipse weekend include Parksville RV and Thunder Rock. Day use area: bathhouse, potable water, FOOD & DRINK VENDOR CALL! Ocoee Whitewater Center: Polk County, Elevation 1,250. Located adjacent to U.S. Highway 64 approximately 26 miles east of Cleveland in the Ocoee River Gorge. The Ocoee Whitewater Center offers an information center, restrooms, potable water, picnic sites, gift shop, native gardens, water play, hiking and biking trails. The Monroe County Fall Frenzy Fishing Tournament will be September 9 at the Toqua boat ramp. Entry fee is $50, and $10 for lunker. First place wins $1,500. Pay bank is 100 percent. This will be one of your last chances for good money before next spring. Saturday s winning team, Shawn, Charles, Dillon, Cole, and Dan at the Rus- Fishermen are still catching bass on our area lakes. Daytime anglers are fishing deep water or wellshaded areas. Those who enjoy somewhat cooler temperatures at night can fish much shallower or still probe the depths of the lake. Crappie fishermen are going as deep as 40 feet to bring home slabs for dinner. The tail waters below all our dams will give up bass because of the cooler water. The main attraction for this type fishery is stripers and catfish. The tail waters of Chilhowee, Fort Loudon, Watts Bar, and Chickamauga will give up some catfish and striper that will test your equipment, your en- sell Biven Summer Shootout held at Chilhowee Sportman s Club. durance, and your strength. Landing a 40- pound striper or a 50- pound catfish can take a long time, but it sure is fun. Rivers and creeks like Tellico, Citico, Hiwassee, and tournament Ocoee are ten or more degrees cooler than the lakes. Most of these waterways have good numbers of bass, bream, trout, and catfish. The fish are cooler so they bite better and you are cooler and enjoy the fishing more. The only lake that remains pretty cool is Chilhowee and it is now open to fishing. Haven t talked to anyone who has tried it yet, but it should be some good fishing. The Russel Biven Summer Shootout sporting clay tournament at Chilhowee Sportsman s Club was a big success. Around 250 shooters showed up to support the benefit. There were five different flights. Sorry, I only got the Saturday flight winners. That team consisted of Shawn, Charles, Cole, Dillion, and Dan. They shot 455 out of 500 targets as a team. Dan got high overall flights with a score of 98 out of 100. Everyone had a great time. Russell Biven, who works for Channel 10 and is the namesake, had a great time shooting. So, I have given you some ideas to go have some fun with this weekend.
