New Board Members Bill Falconer Bill grew up in New Jersey and came to Colorado in He met his wife, Jenny Hager, in Breckenridge and in 1983 they moved down to Boulder to start a family. He has 2 children, Emily 27, and Eric 24. Bill enjoyed a 30 year career flying for Delta Air Lines after spending 5 years in the Air Force, retiring in Bill likes to ski, bike and play golf in his considerable spare time. He is continually amazed at the zest and vitality of the SkiMeister members and is honored to volunteer as a board member. Phyllis Sjogren As the new treasurer of SkiMeisters for the next three years, I would like to introduce myself to everyone. I am retired from Lockheed Martin after 20 years of financial analysis of the rocket science business. As snowbirds headed south for the winter, I found myself headed north to the Icebox of the Nation, Fraser, CO. After 14 years of living the dream, another dream came true, my granddaughter was born and I am enjoying being Grandma. I have skied 6 years with SkiMeisters as a guide and hiked the last 3 years. Greatest joy seeing my 4 year old granddaughter joining me on the slopes and hiking trails. Thanks for the opportunity to serve. Tony Mancuso Tony is a Colorado native who grew up in east Denver on Holly Street when Holly was the east boundary of the City & County of Denver. His profession was mechanical engineering although he has worked in a variety of roles from long term planning to chemical / process engineering in the oil and gas business. During his working career, he has lived in Canada and in the Middle East, where in Saudi Arabia he assisted in supporting the Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Desert Farewell through volunteer service and personal contributions to support the U.S. Army Central Command. Tony was also a long standing member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and November 2017 Page 3
served as a committee member on ASME Codes and Standards. Tony and his wife Joan enjoy visiting and staying engaged with family and friends both in the States and Abroad. They have four children, four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. There oldest grandchild is currently stationed in Japan with the U.S. Air Force while their youngest son is in graduate school in California. While his working career took him away from Colorado for 24 years, he is happy to be residing again in Colorado. Judy Schmidt Judy retired from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a Public Health Educator. Most of her career was spent in various roles In nursing, education, and management. She is currently a social committee co-chair finding and advising committees for the four subsidized SkiMeister events held each year. Super SkiMeister Awards First, I d like to thank those who provided nominations for this award. Second, I d like to thank Roger Foreman and Bernie Griffin who helped with this year s award planning. The Super SkiMeisters Awards Program replaced the Honorary Members Program in The purpose of the program is to recognize members who greatly contributed a significant amount of their time and talents to this organization. We are honored to award the 2017 Super SkiMeisters Award to these people who will receive as a token of our appreciation a little gold skier pin. Janet Limbach Beth Murphy and Bob Horney Charlie and Bette Carcano November 2017 Page 4
Charlie & Bette Carcano Charlie served on the Board as a Member at Large and was active in the hiking program for several years being the leader for 3 years. Both Bette and Charlie were first year participants in the NASTAR program winning medals that year. Later, they went on to Nationals where Charlie won the Bronze. Over the years they provided much support helping with Summer Picnic activities and other SkiMeisters events such as Charlie being the MC for the last Winterfest show. This was back in the day when Winterfest included a floor show using all SkiMeisters talent. They also organized non-sponsored SkiMeisters tripslike to Costa Rica and Panama. Bette and Charlie hosted the new member parties for 3 years at their home with new and current members attending. One of the most important contributions, which few people know, is that they provided a room for the SkiMeisters Board meetings for many years and continue to do so to this day. This place was called Charlie s Barn. They would open-up the doors for the Board meeting, stay during the meeting and then lock up, which by the way they still do today and sometimes these were long meetings. I think we can honestly say that the Carcanos have truly been active participants and have attended more Board Meetings than any other SkiMeister. Beth Murphy, Bob Horney Bob and Beth joined SkiMeisters in 2000 at the urging of Tony and Jeanne Euser. Since then they have been busy: coleading the 2010 Steamboat Downhill Trip; a Grand Junction Bike/Hike/Wine Tasting Trip in 2015 and leading biking, hiking and cross-country trips. Bob assumed the position of the editor of the Flurries for 3 years. Beth was involved with SkiMeisters Valentine's Day Party entertainment (now Winterfest) for 4 years, singing and trying to dance. She was on the Board for 5 years - 2 years as the secretary and then as Vice President, President (2014) and Past President. Her focus was on safety and she promoted the Medical Emergency Info Data Systems on helmets program from 2012 to present day. She also promoted the embroidery of "SkiMeisters" on t-shirts for 2 years. November 2017 Page 5
Janet Limbach Janet served on the Board for 4 years. First as a Board Member at Large, then as Vice President, President, Past President/Treasurer. Yes, with the idea that the President stay on another year to assist the new President, Janet held two positions. Janet was instrumental in implementing the idea of having a woman President every other year. Thanks Janet! Also during her tenure, the Ski Only Members (SOMs) program was implemented now replaced by the Associate Downhill Members (ADMs) program and the Flurries, which was mailed to all members, was put online saving lots of people time. Biking 2017 Biking Final Report BikeMeisters had a great year! Ridership is up! We have tried to reach-out and be more inclusive in our rides by identifying rides as follows: Strenuous Moderate Easy/Take-It Easy We continue to get great cooperation from all of our riders in making the BikeMeisters program a success. Of course, our weekly leaders make our program a success. We are thankful to all of the folks that helped make this a great year by volunteering to lead rides. The list includes: Jeff Beeman, Shirley Bradsby, Sandy Bruggeman, Claire Buhl, Steve Burkholder, Anne Burkholder, Jennifer Combs, Tom Vesey, Ken Decker, Arnold Fridland, Pat Fridland, Bob Horney, Beth Murphy, Don Hirschfield, Sue Hirschfield, Barb Jansen, Carolyn Kleinke, Karen Kreifels, Fred Limbach, Janet Limbach, Brett Liming, Peter Mayerson, Ron Neel, Judie Neel, Dave Noble, Woody Norman, Marion Norman, Dick Olde, Kay Olde, Joe Pigman, Dennis Pearl, Dave Sheets, Marty Sheets, Bill Urquhart, and Linda Wiles. I sure hope we haven t missed anyone, but if so, thank you, too! As you may be aware, Brett Liming will be the new Bike Leader for next year and has some great ideas for the 2018 season. Both Bill Urquhart and I will be assisting Brett in the coming year. I appreciate the support you have given me for the past several years as the SkiMeisters Bike Leader. Thanks to everyone who joined us on Mondays and at our special events. As a reminder, there are no organized BikeMeister rides from November through April. November 2017 Page 6

The SkiMeister Cross Country Ski program provides all full members with the opportunity to enjoy cross country outings on Tuesdays through the winter, usually starting at 10:00. It works like the hiking program--it is fun and successful with special thanks to you who volunteer to lead or co-lead an outing. Outings may be planned on either side of the pass, on the Winter Park side or somewhere off I-70. Some ideas from past outings not on this year s schedule yet are: Snow Mountain Ranch Jim Creek St. Louis Creek Deadhorse Trail (near St Louis Creek) High Lonesome Hut Elk Meadow Tunnel Hill trail between WP and Blue Sky area Harbison Loop, RMNP Lulu City trail, RMNP Bakerville/Loveland Valley Boreas Pass road (Breckenridge) Sally Barber Mine B and B Mine trail OR you name it! Downhill Skiing SkiMeisters After-Ski Parties Every Wednesday, beginning with the downhill ski season, the SkiMeisters host an after-ski get together, either at Doc's Road House or The Town Hall in WP. This season, however, we also have two dates where the after-ski party will be held at Adolph's Event Center in Old Town. The schedule for the after-ski parties for the season is as follows: December 6th - Doc's December 13th - Town Hall December 20th - Doc's January 3rd - Town Hall January 10th - Doc's January 17th - Adolph's Event Center in Old Town January 24th - Doc's January 31st - Town Hall (Steamboat trip Jan 29th February 2nd) February 7th - Doc's February 14th - Town Hall February 21st - Doc's February 28th - Town Hall March 7th - Doc's March 14th - Town Hall March 21st - Adolph's Event Center in Old Town March 28th - End of season luncheon - place to be determined November 2017 Page 9
After-ski parties on Dec 6th and 20th at Doc s will start at 2:00 pm. All remaining parties for the season at Doc s will start at 2:30 pm. All after-ski parties held at Town Hall and Adolph s Event Center in Old Town will start at 3:00 pm. SkiMeisters will provide appetizers for parties held at Doc s and Adolph's Event Center in Old Town. Drinks can be purchased at the bar. Parties scheduled for Town Hall will be hosted by SkiMeisters volunteers. The volunteers will set-up the room at Town Hall before the parties and clean-up afterwards in addition to picking up a main entrée and serving food as necessary. While it is not a difficult job, we do need volunteers to host some of the Town Hall parties in the ski season. An added advantage of volunteering is that you will have the opportunity to meet many new and existing SkiMeisters that you may not have met before. Please consider volunteering. Contact Inge Rewinkel at or ingerewinkel@yahoo.com if you are available. Parties held at Town Hall are buffet style. Consequently, all attendees should bring a food item to share and their own beverage. Plain water will be supplied by SkiMeisters. When bringing a dish to pass please remember to bring any necessary serving utensil since SkiMeisters will not provide these items. After the party, please take home your leftovers, serving utensils and any dish/food container you brought to the party as well as your bottles and cans for recycling (since the Town of Winter Park does not recycle). This will greatly assist SkiMeisters party hosts in cleaning up Town Hall. SkiMeisters hosts will not be responsible for anything you may have left behind. Events Downhill Ski Trip Steamboat Springs January 29, - February 2, 2018 Planning is nearly complete for 110 SkiMeisters to have a great time at Steamboat. Check in will be Monday January 29, at 4 pm at Trappeurs Crossing main lobby. NO EARLY CHECK-IN. Final details, room assignments, schedules, etc will be sent out to those going in early January. 12 2018 XC Getaway in the Black Hills of South Dakota February 21 26, 2018 Yay, there is still room for a few more people on our XC Getaway trip to South Dakota February 21-26, Cross country skiing in the Black Hills National Forest, a visit to Mt. Rushmore (hopefully with snow dusting the faces), and a hiking day in the Badlands! We will ride by chartered deluxe bus as far as Rapid City on Wednesday, February 21, with the plan to stop on the way for some exploring at Mt. Rushmore National Memorial and then driving east to hike and view the Badlands National Park the next morning. That afternoon, we ll head over to stay in Deadwood or Spearfish Canyon for 3 days of cross country skiing through pine, aspen and birch in 2 different trail systems of the Black Hills National Forest. The areas are rated easy to difficult, with separate snowshoeing trails. On Monday, February 26, if conditions permit, we ll stop at one of the Cave National Parks and then relax for the ride all the way home. The cost, which includes accommodations for all 5 nights, all the skiing and snowshoeing (including a donation for the trail grooming), many of the breakfasts and dinners, bus transportation to and from the Denver area and all in between, and all gratuities, is estimated to be about $850 per person, possibly a little bit more. (It s so hard to predict certain costs way ahead of time. Often they have been over-estimated! Negotiations and details are being worked out right now to stay close to our estimated budget.) For all of you who are already in the Yes Group, please use the Second Payment coupon for your second payment of $400 per person. If you have not secured your spot yet, join the Yes Group by sending in the New Reservation coupon with a payment of $600 per person to catch up this is the $200 deposit plus the second payment of $400. The postmark date on your reservation will determine your place in line! If the group fills, you will be placed on the waitlist, and your check will be held and not deposited until space becomes available. As a part of the SkiMeister Cross Country Program, this trip is for cross country skiers, with snowshoers also welcome. All full members get first priority; if space becomes available later, then this will be open to ADMs, people on the waitlist and other guests. Koby Kellogg with questions at kklogg@aol.com.
