Let us whisk you off to the Orient, but stay right here in Denver. The Empress Dim Sum restaurant has been rated in the Zagat Survey as excellent. Just $20.00, which includes tax and gratuity, will get you an unforgettable experience. Last year this event was a resounding success thanks to fellow member Catharine Fogg. Catharine is arranging the event this year too, so it is sure to be a good one. We re on the Web! See us at: Empress is located at 2825 W. Alameda Ave. in Denver just east of Federal across from McDonald s. To reserve your spot, Cathy Sapp at rockymtncmc@gmail.com or call her at Make sure that you make your reservation by March 11 th or you will be out of luck.
2 Hill Topics March 2008 Issue Page 2 of 6 Section Chair s Message On February 23 rd, ten of us attended an outstanding, energetic performance by actors in Beauty and the Beast at the Lakewood Cultural Center. I had the joy of having my two grand-daughters age six and eight join me. The snowshoe group has been having fun on Wednesdays. I want to thank Pete Spandau for organizing the trips and Elaine Kallos and Joe Leahy for leading them. I hope you are enjoying winter. Downhill skiing three days a week is great fun for me. Our Section has an event each month planned by Cathy Sapp and Joan Waldheim. We could always have an additional event some months. Think of something you would like to do with members and call Cathy Sapp to get help planning it a month in advance to get in the newsletter. You can reach Cathy at or rockymtncmc@gmail.com _ççç YÉÜáuxÜz 2008 Senior Winter Games Annually, Summit County Seniors host the Senior Winter Games at the Summit. 4 Hill Topics March 2008 Page 4 of 6 SNOWSHOEING Come join us. Spring is fast approaching and the snowshoeing season is winding down. We have traveled through areas of snow covered trees and across meadows with blue skies and majestic peaks for background. We have experienced a wide range of temperatures and the winds have changed some of the planned outings. Those who have participated have enjoyed themselves by meeting new friends. Elaine Kallos and Joe Leahy (both CMC trained leaders) are leading the snowshoe outings that are classified as easy to easy/moderate with distances of 4 to 5 miles and elevation gains of less than 1000 feet. Typical outings start at 9 AM by meeting at the Heritage Square parking lot on West Colfax Avenue in Golden and carpool to the selected trail head. The group decides when to stop on the trail for lunch. We then return to the trailhead and drive back to Heritage Square; arriving about 4 PM. We have an 8 AM start time when driving a further distance to the trail head. Elaine and Joe have stepped in as superb leaders on the trail in Pete's absence (in cardiac re-hab, getting strong again). Elaine is an enthusiastic, alert and encouraging leader who scouts the trails in advance so she is familiar and comfortable with our destination. Joe is a great teacher, sharing his many years of being in the wilderness. We have learned how to break a trail in deep snow, how to recognize numerous animal tracks and unique flora and fauna on the trail, to observe and be in awe of nature's gems (mountain peaks, glacial rocks, etc.) and how to be safe on the trail (avalanche awareness and concern for fellow hikers). All of this season's snowshoers deeply appreciate Elaine and Joe's guidance and commitment to the group. RMOTHG snowshoeing and hiking photographs can be found at: March 2008 Snowshoe Trip Schedule DATE March 5 th March 12 th March 19 th March 26 th On the trail up Chief Mountain TRIP Kenosha Pass Trail Mount Evans Road S. Chicago Creek Trail Idaho Springs Reservoir Trail Pete Spandau organizes the snowshoe outings, and if you would like to participate, please contact Pete by at spspandau@msn.com or by phone at Pete will supply detailed information on trips by several days before the outing. Planned trips are subject to change due to weather and snow conditions. Guests are allowed with the signing of a waiver form. Guests may participate in two of our trips before joining the RMOTHG section of CMC. If you are not on the snowshoeing list and wish to receive notices, please contact Pete Spandau.
5 Page 5 of 6 Hill Topics March 2008 Issue Back Country Ski Touring Over the summer, there had been discussions about doing back country ski tours. I am willing to lead back country ski trips this winter. Initially, they will be Easy I (1 to 3 miles on generally flat terrain) or Easy II (3-6 miles < 600ft elevation gain) tours. I will try to avoid trips which require driving on the I-70 corridor on the weekends. The days of the week I would be willing to lead these trips are Monday, Friday and Saturday. If you are interested in participating regularly, what day of the week would you prefer? For planning purposes the first trip will be on Friday, March 7, 2008 to Butler Gulch (Easy II) on Berthoud Pass. We will meet at Heritage Square lower parking lot, north end, near the Apex Trail Head, on West Colfax Avenue in Golden and car pool to the trail head. Heritage Square is about 1 mile north of I-70, Exit 259. We should be back at Heritage Square by 5 PM. All tours are subject to change due to the weather and availability of snow. Guests are allowed with the signing of a waiver form. Guests may participate in two of our activities before joining the Rocky Mountain Over The Hill Gang section of the Denver Group of the Colorado Mountain Club.
