1 Rocky Mountain Over The Hill Gang Hill Topics April 2015 THE 1968 EXHIBIT The year that rocked history! SUNDAY, APRIL 12 SIGN UP NOW! DEADLINE APRIL 1 The 1968 Exhibit brings to life this pivotal American year through photographs, artifacts, vintage pop culture items and interactives. Explore the exhibit and see the events that changed Colorado and America forever. In 1968, the death toll in the Vietnam War reached a new high. Riots and demonstrations raged across the country, Apollo 8 orbited the moon, and the nation was transformed by the tragic assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy. The 1960s also charted a dramatic road in America s pop culture. It was in 1968 that Hair opened on Broadway, Laugh-In debuted on television and Johnny Cash gave his famous performance at Folsom Prison. The 1968 Exhibit is an ambitious, multimedia experience that looks at how the events of the year have fueled a persistent, if often contradictory, sense of identity for the people who were there and those who came after. Join the CMC group on Sunday April 12 th at 2:00 PM at the History Colorado Center, 1200 Broadway, Denver. We will be getting a free tour of the exhibit with plenty of time afterwards to browse more. For a group discount of 10 or more the price is $10 adult or $8 for senior (65+). We will be paying with one check so you MUST sign up and pay on the CMC calendar. Off street parking is at the Art Museum down the street. We will be meeting for an optional lunch at Stoney s Bar and Grill at 12:30 PM, located at 1111 Lincoln Dr. (a short walk to museum). They have lunches from $6-$10, various sandwiches, soups, salads. Check out their website or For more information about the exhibit, go to

Many thanks go to Carole Adler, Sue Henley, and Frank Burzynski for their planning excellence. Both nights we shared dinner, stories, songs, games, and interesting discussions. In March, Bob Collins and Linda Lawson led an excellent Avalanche Terrain Avoidance (ATA) class, focused for RMOTHG members. Approximately 17 people attended the evening classroom session. A field day was held the same week to go over the principles in the snow. Bob, many thanks for organizing the class. We appreciate your strong commitment to increase RMOTHG understanding of avalanches. Linda, it was generous of you to co-lead the additional session with Bob. A number of years ago, the Rocky Mountain Over The Hill Gang came into existence as a section under the Denver Group, Colorado Mountain Club. Over the past few years, several people have brought up the idea of changing the name of the group. The name Top of The Hill Gang was presented at March s Board of Directors meeting. There are some reasons to change the name, and of course as many reasons to keep it the same. The Board decided to open it up to the membership and see if there is adequate interest to change the name. Please provide your thoughts and ideas to a board member (see last page of this newsletter) about a name. At the next board meeting in May, the Board will put together a ballot for voting. We plan to announce the name at the Annual Dinner in September. So have some fun thinking of different choices, as well as talking about why the name shouldn t change. Then we will vote on it, including the current name, and see what the membership wants. Meanwhile, enjoy winter. It seems to be slipping away, sometimes faster than we want! ~Martha Delporte RMOTHG Social Calendar APR 12 ~ WED ~ 1968 EXHIBIT ~ CO History Museum ~Tour & Lunch MAY19 ~TUES ~ ENOS MILLS (RMNP) CO History Museum ~ Lecture & Dinner JUNE 6 ~ SAT ~ SUMMER PICNIC ~ Summit County Senior Center JULY TBD ~ MINER S ALLEY PLAYHOUSE & Dinner ~ Golden (TENTATIVE) AUG 9 ~ SUN or TBD ~ BANJO BILLY S HISTORY BUS TOUR ~ Boulder or Denver SEPT 20 ~ SUN ~ ANNUAL DINNER ~$30 ~ Mt. But April in Colorado can bring us fresh snow any time, so think snow or pleasant early-spring hiking for this last month of official snowshoe/winter hikes. March brought Carol and Frank s lively two night hut trip near Shrine Pass in Walter s and Jay s Cabins, with good snow, and fun-loving camaraderie among the 25 participants (See pics!). Lots of folks enjoyed other snowshoes, too, so it s been a fun season! We offer April snowshoes/winter hikes as conditions allow, and we ll post needed changes in our weekly s. Among our regular mountain trips, we ll also lead some shorter trips for those wanting nearby outings on busy spring Wednesdays. Count on fun whatever we do! If you want to be on the list for weekly mailings regarding location and trip descriptions, you can still jeff.flax@gmail.com. Thanks to all our leaders for their scouts and hike prep, and to our flexible, positive, prepared members who make our winter trips such fun! See you on the trail for the last of our winter treks, as we experience Spring at its crazy Colorado best! RMOTHG CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING We have enjoyed a great winter so far of cross-country skiing. We are unsure if we will be able to offer any more trips this season due to snow conditions. While there is still quite a bit of snow in many areas, the snow has been heating and melting during the day, then refreezing at night. This leads to icy and crusty conditions which are not compatible for enjoyable skiing. We will notify members on the RMOTHG cross-country ski list of conditions improve and trips are added for this winter. Many thanks to our terrific cross-country ski leaders; Jim Stelzig, Tom Waymire, Vern Bass, Jeff Flax, and Roger Wendell. Please contact Jeff Flax at Jeff.Flax@GMail.com with any questions about RMOTHG cross-country skiing. 4 Hill Topics APRIL 2015 Page! 4 of! 10 Celebrate the Centennial Anniversary of Rocky Mountain National Park. Join us for a presentation on ENOS MILLS & THE CAMPAIGN FOR ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK History Colorado Center Date and Time: Tuesday evening, May 19 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM TUESDAY EVENING, MAY 19 Event Description: On January 26, 1915, after a hard-fought seven-year campaign, President Woodrow Wilson signed the bill creating Rocky Mountain National Park. At the center of it all was conservationist Enos A. Mills, known as the Father of Rocky Mountain National Park. Historian Jim Pickering delves into the history of this Colorado icon as we celebrate the centennial of the Park. For information on the lecture, go to Location: The History Colorado Center is at 1200 Broadway in downtown Denver. There is no designated parking lot for the museum. The parking lot for the Denver Art Museum is nearby. Optional Dinner: We will meet for optional dinner at 5:30 at Pints Pub, 221 West 13 th Ave, about a five minute walk from the museum and parking lot. The Pub serves brilliant burgers, sandwiches, salads and entrees with a British flair. Most selections are in the $10 $12 price range. Pints Pub features a wide variety of spirits and artisan brewed beers. Check out for more detail. Please sign up for dinner as well as the lecture so we can arrange for tables. Cost and Sign Up: Tickets are $8.50, which is the discounted group rate. We have 18 tickets available. If you would like to attend, you must sign up and pay for your ticket on the CMC calendar. To sign up, go to click on calendar and find the Enos Mills Lecture event listed on May 19. Also, please answer the question about joining for dinner. Hope to see you there!! IS IT CYCLING SEASON YET? HOW ABOUT HIKING? Almost!!
5 Hill Topics APRIL 2015 Page! 5 of! 10 THE SNOW IS...M E L T I N G... CYCLING Let s see, the weather is warming up, I ve seen hardcore cyclists out on the roads, the calendar says May is a month away, and I went looking for my bike. The Rocky Mountain Over The Hill Gang (RMOTHG) biking season must be getting close. Our regular cycling season is from the first Friday in May through the end of September. The morning rides are about 20 to 30 miles at a speed of 10 to 12 mph and finish with an optional lunch at a nearby restaurant. When available, we ll have a leader for a slower group of riders. Watch for notification of this slower rider group (Terrapins) in the weekly s. Most of our trips are on paved, level bike paths. Occasionally we encounter some hills and gravel trails. The essential items for participating are plenty of water, necessary tools to repair a flat tire (replacement tube), appropriate clothing for changes in the weather and carrying an ID and medical card. Wearing a helmet is mandatory. notices are sent out several days prior to the excursions to describe the weekly ride and the meeting location. Most meeting times are 8:30 AM with departure at 9:00 AM. Guests are allowed with signing of a waiver form. Guests may participate in two of our activities before joining RMOTHG section and the Denver Group of CMC. If you are interested in riding please contact Pete Spandau by at bicycling.list@rmothg.org requesting to have your name added to the cycling list. Only RMOTHG members will be added to the list and you ll receive weekly reminders to sign up at HIKING We ve reached another shoulder season and started the planning process for the 2015 RMOTHG Wednesday hiking program which runs from the first Wednesday in May to the last Wednesday in October. As part of the process I ll send an to all those on the RMOTHG Hiking list in mid-april. Receiving that confirms that you re on the list (look for "2015 RMOTHG Hiking - list CONFIRM" in the title): If you would like to be removed from the list, send a return to hiking.list@rmothg.org with PLEASE REMOVE in the body. If you don t receive the mid-april and want to be added to the list, send an to hiking.list@rmothg.org with at least an address or name that identifies you in our db asking to be added. Otherwise, do nothing. Those on the list will receive a weekly announcing the next Wednesday s hikes simultaneous with the those hikes appearing on the CMC schedule and available for signup. When Marion Dries and Jim Stookesberry started leading Wednesday RMOTHG hikes circa 2006, our membership wasn t much more than the numbers we ve had hiking on a busy Wednesday in 2013 or When I started hiking with RMOTHG in 2010 I think there were 17 or 18 hikes during May-October, while we had 72 in 2013 and 73 in 2014 (with 12 canceled because of weather!) This program runs on trip leaders and we need to maintain a pipeline of new trip leaders to replace those who retire, move on to other activities, etc. So if you ve ever thought about leading, or felt a twinge of guilt, consider taking the necessary classes or talk to any trip leader. There s financial support from RMOTHG if you choose to do so. All of our hikes are in fact CMC hikes lead by trip leaders qualified by the Denver Group - the RMOTHG in the title indicates who will be hiking and some of our practices. Hikes in 2014 were led by 25 different trip leaders and broke down into 60% A hikes, 30% B hikes, 10% C hikes. We usually start out hiking in the foothills in May/ June, going higher with summer in July-August, and back down in September-October. Hikes are easier in the early months and may be more challenging as we get deeper into the season. If you have questions about a hike or what might be expected of you on a hike, contact the trip leader - their phone number or can be found in the announcement or CMC schedule entry - or talk with a friend. We welcome you.
6 OTHER DAY TRIPS! Hill Topics APRIL 2015 Page! 6 of! 10 RMOTHG offers Other Day snowshoes and summer and winter hikes. The days of the trips - all on days other than Wednesday - vary depending on the leader's schedule and snow and weather conditions. The snowshoes tend to be Difficult and the hikes "C" hikes, but not always. The trips are off-trail as well as on established backcountry trails. They range from 1,500 ft. elevation gain to 3,500 ft. elevation gain. The Other Day Trips scheduled for April, all led by Bob Collins, are as follows: FRIDAY, APRIL 3 MONDAY, APRIL 6 THURSDAY, APRIL 9 TUESDAY, APRIL 14 FRIDAY, APRIL 17 MONDAY, APRIL 20 THURSDAY, APRIL 23 DOUGLAS MTN HEART LAKE JONES PASS ROAD TO NYSTROM TRAIL BANDIT PEAK BURNING BEAR AND BEYOND (FROM THE SOUTH TH) BLACK LAKE (RMNP) KINGSTON/JAMES PEAK. Please check the CMC website for additions and updates. If you are interested in receiving announcements about RMOTHG Other Day trips, write to Bob Collins rcollins@lindquist.com AS THE NICE WEATHER ARRIVES, OUR THOUGHTS TURN TO TRAIL CREWS! PLEASE make time in June to help Dave Griest do slash piling in 3 Sisters/Alderfer Park. Jeffco Open Space has been cutting Douglas Fir tree limbs and seedlings so that the Ponderosa Pines can become dominant. Ponderosa s like sun and the firs like shade. The strategy is to avoid/reduce those dangerous, fast moving, ground wild fires in the park and near Evergreen s mountain houses, by making Ponderosa Pines dominate rather than the Firs. We will be taking already trimmed branches, trees and carrying them to piles where the masticator (a machine that chips the wood up) can maneuver without tearing up the parkland. This will be a volunteer effort that can use many hands and everyone no matter your physical ability. We also will be planning to help on traditional trail work in Golden Gate State Park, as we have the last few years. So get ready to dig in! Please watch for the dates in June for these work crews. 9 Hill Topics APRIL 2015 Page! 9 of! 10 FUN PHOTOS The SHRINE PASS HUT TRIP trip was a great time! We had 24 people and 2 sleds. The first order of business was snow-shoeing in the 2.7 miles to Shrine Mountain Inn on day 1 with mild temperatures, the second day we offered optional day trips the first to Shrine Mountain Ridge 2.1 miles, and the afternoon hike was up to the knobs adjacent to Shrine Pass Road about 1.5 miles round trip for some nice views and then we explored the powder in the trees on the return trip. We enjoyed food and social time each evening in Walter's Cabin, and a few of us managed to get some time in the sauna adjacent to Jay's cabin. It snowed the second night so we had some fresh snow on the trail on our way out.
