Members of ese groups will receive a $20 discount off e WTS registration WHEN ey use e discount form included in e web site indicated below. Wilderness Trekking School Starts September 14 Get ready for hiking in Colorado's fabulous golden autumn! The crowds are gone, e fooills are crisp and cool, and e under gods are sleeping. Wilderness Trekking School (WTS) is for ose looking for adventure - AND - for ose who just want to enjoy e scenery. WTS is a great introduction to e Colorado Mountain Club and a place to meet new friends. WTS is Colorado Mountain Club's largest school, a comprehensive course on mountain hiking. Students are all ages, from 18 to 80. If you're new to hiking, WTS gives you e opportunity to learn how to travel safely - and wi confidence - in e backcountry. If you're an experienced hiker, WTS gives you a chance to review, to enhance your skills, and possibly to fill in some gaps. WTS also fulfills one of e requirements to obtain a Denver Group C hiker classification and to attend Basic Mountaineering School. Topics covered include: Essential gear, helping you decide what you need to buy and carry Off-trail travel techniques, from boulders and talus to tundra Map and compass skills, figuring out where you are, navigation and route-finding It s time to mark your calendars wi e date for one of RMOTHG s premier events. By popular demand, we will again enjoy e great food and wonderful ambiance of e Canyon Room at Mount Vernon Country Club. There will be a cash bar available roughout e evening. Weaer, how to anticipate and handle wind, rain, lightning, and snow Nutrition, helping you choose what food to carry Overnight survival techniques and how to handle a backcountry emergency Snow travel and avalanche awareness, handling unexpected snow on e trail Leave No Trace practices Students have e opportunity to learn techniques of safe backcountry travel and to practice in a noncompetitive, non-confrontational setting. Students plan and complete a graduation hike wi eir field group. WTS is a great place to learn and practice new skills, make new friends, and become a safe backcountry traveler. The course consists of five Tuesday nights and five field days. Students are divided into groups of people, based on hiking pace, conditioning, and prior experience. Instructor teams consist of a senior instructor and two assistant instructors. Fall 2010 classes will be on Tuesdays Sep. 14, 21, Oct. 12, 19, and 26. Field days are on your choice of all Thursdays, Saturdays, or Sundays on Sep. 23, 25, or 26; Sept 30, Oct. 2 or 3; Oct. 14, 16, or 17; Oct. 21, 23, or 24; Dec. 9, 11, or 12. Make-up arrangements are available for a missed class and may be available for a missed field day, depending upon instructor resources. The fall 2010 session starts Tuesday, September 14 at 6:30 PM in e American Mountaineering Center in Golden. Tuition is $90 for Denver group members, $100 for oer CMC group members. After dinner, elections will be held for e 3 Board positions becoming available. This year, we will have a special entertainment treat in e form of a one hour musical show, provided by members of e Joe Peterson Orchestra. 3 Page 3 of 6 Hill Topics August 2010 Issue HIKING This past mon we were able to hike e higher elevations. However, due to weaer, road conditions, trail closures, etc., we had to make changes weekly. When possible, a different hike was substituted and still many enjoyed e opportunity to get outdoors wi like-minded seniors. Butler Gulch Tentative August Hiking Schedule August 4 August 11 August 18 August 25 Diamond Lake and Arapahoe Pass; bo in e IPW Blue Lake; in e IPW Butler Gulch TBA Alough our groups are large we have been blessed wi many leaders willing to help guide on e trail and accommodate e various paces. Most of our hikes are rated "A"; some will be rated "B"; and some will have tight restrictions on group size. Whenever possible we will try to offer 2 hikes on e same day but in different areas. To do at, we rely on many to volunteer to guide a group on e designated hike. Many have been working hard to help and our anks go to: Sandy Curran, Jeff Flax, Myrna Goldberg, Marc Hasfjord, Sue Henley, Elaine Kallos, Barb Schwarz, Carl Slater, Pete Spandau and yours truly. Then just is past week we had our first C hike just west of Frisco to Eccles Pass at 12,000 feet. On our way to e pass we went rough a beautiful meadow filled wi almost every variety of wildflower. The group was so inspired at ey set down for a photo in e middle of e flowers and started singing The Sound Of Music well, sort of. For August we intend to repeat is pattern anoer hike in e Indian Peaks Wilderness area and anoer C Hike. 4 Hill Topics August 2010 Issue Page 4 of 6 Issue BIKING The biking season is in full swing. Our weekly rides are usually on Fridays wi an average of 27 participants each week. It is a great group of welcoming friends at enjoy e exercise and fellowship of e outings. Most of our trips are on paved, level bike pas and average about 10 to 12 mph wi stops. Occasionally we encounter some hills and gravel trails. Infrequently, we have a slower group when a volunteer leader steps forward. The essential items for participating are plenty of water, necessary tools to repair a flat tire (replacement tube), appropriate cloing for changes in e weaer, and carrying ID and a medical The Gang on Ralston Creek Last Mon card. Guests may participate cxàx fñtçwtâ SAVE THE DATE FOR THE OCTOBER 23RD PERFORMANCE OF THE CHOSEN Our own Diane Gilboa is producing The Chosen, based on e novel by Chaim Potok, at e Mizel Arts and Culture Center in SE Denver. The story takes place in 1940 s Brooklyn where teenaged sons of a modern Jewish intellectual and a traditional Hasidic Rabbi meet as opponents in a heated baseball game, and choose to be friends. Their journey to adulood unfolds in e midst of struggles wiin faer/son relationships, between peers, and for intellectual and religious freedom. Plan to sign up in September for e Early bird ticket price of $20. Full price is $24. An optional pre-eatre dinner will be planned, as well as post production interaction wi e cast. Sue Osborn
5 Page 5 of 6 Hill Topics August 2010 Issue AMERICAN INDIAN HISTORY TOUR AND FOOD SUNDAY, SEPT. 12, 1:00-4:30 PM DEADLINE FOR SIGNUP, SEPT. 8 TH Are you curious about Denver s early days when white settlers arrived in e land of e Arapahoe Indians? Meet me at 12:45 PM before we join our guide from History Colorado, e Colorado Historical Society in front of Union Station for a two hour walking tour covering e years Learn about early interactions between settlers and e Indians up until e time of e railroad. On-street parking in LODO is free on Sundays, and you are encouraged to carpool. After our tour, we will drive to Tocabe Restaurant at 44 and Lowell for an American Indian meal. Tocabe was featured in e March 2010 edition of Denver s 5280 magazine. We will learn about e food, during a presentation by one of e restaurant s Native American owners, before ordering our meal. Many of e main courses and desserts are assembled on delicious and light fry bread made from a secret Osage Indian family recipe. Options are available for vegetarians, and sauces range from mild to hot. Cost for e tour is $10, and meals at Tocabe average $8 excluding a drink. Sign up as a member on by going to programs and social activities. Talk to Jane Vanderkolk, who made e initial contact wi e Denver History Museum, for some interesting insights about Indian culture and history. Sue Osborn Election of Board Members Three Rocky Mountain Over The Hill Gang section ree new board members will be elected at e Annual Dinner Meeting on September 26 by ose section members present. Ballots will be handed out and nominations will be accepted from e floor. The ballots will be collected, counted and e ree winners announced. Listed below are bios of e candidates: Connie Carroll I am honored to be asked to run for e RMOTHG board of directors and I feel at my professional and volunteer experience have provided me wi a solid foundation at will allow me to excel in is position. Specifically, I am a retired teacher so I have e time to serve and I also have a variety of volunteer and board experience. I was a board member for Lakeview Museum Arts and Science Council of Peoria, St. Philomena School in Peoria, and e Junior League of Peoria, Illinois. I also served as chairperson for project planning for e Junior League. In addition, I was chairperson of bo e arts committee and e restoration committee at oversaw e restoration of e historic Hershel Balance house, which later became e Junior League headquarters. I did research for e Peoria Historical Society for a publication which resulted in Peoria II, a historical inventory of e city before I also served as co-chair of e Peoria Notre High School annual auction. When my husband and I moved to Denver 3 years ago, we were given a membership to CMC as a gift from our children. Shortly ereafter, I joined e RMOTHG and began biking, hiking and attending social functions. It has been a wonderful way to meet new and interesting people while exploring all Colorado has to offer. The RMOTHG is a well oiled machine made up of a diverse group of people who have one important ing in common, e love of e outdoors. It would be a rewarding experience to be a member of e board. Marion Dries Having been a member of OTHGI and now RMOTHG for over 14 years, I have had e privilege of enjoying Colorado's beautiful outdoors wi likeminded enusiasts. I have been a Hiking Coordinator and leader for over 8 years. I have also been a Ski Guide for seniors at Keystone Ski Resort for about 8 years. Being on is Board gives me e opportunity to add some of my expertise to ese endeavors. The best part of all is, is at I have met many wonderful people rough e years of whom many have become friends. Thank you for allowing me to serve you. Kay Joyce I am a life time resident of Colorado and have been retired from teaching in e Denver Public Schools for about 3 years. I have been a HOA Board member for e past 9 years and I am also e newsletter editor for e Flatirons Ski Club in Boulder. I volunteer wi e Denver Public Library, Denver Public Schools and e Denver Rescue Mission. I have been a CMC member for 22 years and a member of e amazing RMOTHG group for 3 years. I have enjoyed e multitude of opportunities to get outside and experience our beautiful state. I have enjoyed helping wi e volunteer activities too. It has been wonderful to meet and make new friends wi people at love to do what I do! I have helped organize a few activities for e RMOTHG and am eager to help wherever I am needed. I would be very honored to serve and represent you on e RMOTHG Board.
