March 2, 2013 About three weeks ago, I was on a RMOTHG hiking trip in Golden Gate Canyon. The trip leader was Elaine Kallos. An accident happened on the trip. A hiker tripped on the ice and broke her arm. Elaine took her to the E.R. The medical team found surgery was necessary and scheduled it for the following Monday. Elaine took the hiker home and spent the night with her since she did not have anyone nearby to take care of her. On the day of the surgery, Elaine went back to the hiker s home, took her in for surgery, and then stayed all day at the hospital. The next day, Elaine went back to the hospital and took her back home. Elaine continues to monitor and assist her, offering her help as needed. I have never met anyone in my life like Elaine. She is compassionate with a big heart and willing to help others. I think the RMOTHG should be proud of her, and recognize Elaine as the most compassionate person in the group. All of us who know Elaine should be proud they have a high quality person rarely found in our time. Thank You Elaine - I am proud to call you my friend, Anonymous

3 Hill Topics APR 2013 PAGE 3 of 8 SECTION CHAIR S MESSAGE We are shaped and fashioned by what we love. ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe After 11+ years of coordinating hikes for Rocky Mountain Over The Hill Gang, Jim Stookesberry and Marion Dries, (originally members of RMOTHG International), are passing on their duties to Michael Tamny and Marc Hasfjord. I asked Jim and Marion to tell us a little more about themselves. Jim was born in Omaha, but considers himself a Colorado native, because he moved here when he was 3 years old. He attended South High School in Denver, and after military service he graduated from the University of Denver with a major in accounting. He worked for a national C.P.A. firm in Denver for several years and then joined his family business. The business operated three building material centers in Colorado. After selling the business in 1994, he continued to work in the new business as an internal auditor. After I retired in 2000, I wanted to meet people my age that enjoyed downhill skiing. A friend told me about The Over the Hill Gang. I then joined the Rocky Mountain section of Over the Hill Gang. This group was primarily a ski club; however they did sponsor hiking and bike outings during the summer months. In 2005, Over The Hill Gang International decided to disband their local chapters because they could not get liability insurance. RMOTHG then decided to become a section of the Colorado Mountain Club. At that time, there were only 200 members. Some of my most-liked hikes include Abyss Lake, Butler Gulch, and Mesa Cortina. Favorite activities include hiking and biking in the spring and summer. I am an avid downhill skier in the winter. I like to play golf whenever the weather is good. He also enjoys trips with his wife, Jenene, anytime. A surprise? He enjoys reading spy novels and murder mysteries. Someday, he would like to ski in Utah or possibly Wyoming. Marion is originally from Detroit, Michigan and transferred to Colorado in 1973 with her husband, Jim. They lived in Boulder and eventually moved to Evergreen where they now reside. Marion joined the CMC when she was part of the RMOTHG group and wanted to be in an organization that also had summer activities. CMC was a wonderful fit and she was provided with more than she could have imagined. Some of her favorite hikes include views, wildflowers at peak and water, like the Brainard Lake area, Shrine Pass and Loveland Pass West. Some of her favored activities include skiing, hiking, biking, reading, cooking, politics, and volunteering. Her wish list includes more traveling. She and Jim have previously visited China and Europe and in the future would like to do an Alaskan cruise and visit New Zealand, A surprise? Marion was a ski bum in Aspen in , before Snowmass, traffic lights, many cars and many celebrities. After 51 years of marriage, 5 children, 13 grandchildren, I hope that I can remain healthy, strong and of sound mind to be able to do these things that I enjoy for many, many years. We hope so too, Marion! Thanks, Jim and Marion, for your dedication and joie de vivre! See you on the trails! Kathy Malone Volunteers Need For Denver Group's Annual Dinner Planning Committee Volunteers are needed for the Denver Group's annual dinner planning committee. This is a very rewarding dinner honoring Denver Group members who have made a substantial contribution to the club, as well as a great opportunity for old friends to get together for a fun evening. 4 Hill Topics APR 2013 PAGE 4 of 8 SNOWSHOEING LAST HURRAH! Our winter hikes with yak traks or microspikes were fun, too, since we were outside and getting good workouts in the snow! We ll still hike or snowshoe in April but our Wednesday trips this month are Leaders Choice since April conditions and weather are fickle and determine where we go. Come join our lively, active, friendly OTHG members on the last of our winter hikes/ snowshoes or a couple of spring ones! Some of our snowshoe outings finally found snow for snowshoeing! Frank Burzynski has made a wonderful slideshow from the Emerald lake trip, including the photo shown above ~ the music and additional photos are worth a short visit! Here is the link: rmothg_emerald_lake/slideshow OTHG Wednesday hikes and snowshoe outings focus on camaraderie, being outdoors, getting good exercise in scenic Colorado places. We go a casual pace for two hours, enjoy lunch in a pleasant spot, and return to trailhead. We offer an optional after-hike repast. Each week s will tell you the location and details of the Wed trips. If you re not on the list and want to be, Jeff@jflax.com. Your Snowshoe Leaders SAVE THE DATES! The Annual RMOTHG Camping Trip at Turquoise Lake will be held from August 5 through 8 this year. Registration procedures will be announced in the June RMOTHG Newsletter. WEDNESDAY SNOWSHOE/WINTER HIKE SCHEDULE Most are LEADERS CHOICE, but weekly s will tell specific places once we know the weather and conditions for iffy April! 5 Hill Topics APR 2013 PAGE 5 of 8 IT S TIME FOR CYCLING! each participant to carry their 10 Essential Items. For cycling, I modified the hiking 10 to this biking 10. Who is interested in cycling this year? Have you seen your bike this spring? After a great cycling summer last year, I know your bike was cleaned before storing it for the winter. All you need to do is pump-up the tires and check the weather reports for warm temperatures. A nice day in mid-march found 15 RMOTHG riders enjoying the South Platte River Trail on a spontaneous ride. We have regular outings on Fridays, beginning in May and continuing through September. The rides are approximately 20 to 30 miles at a speed of 10 to 12 mph. Most of our trips are on paved, level bike paths and quiet residential streets. Occasionally we encounter some hills and gravel trails. Sporadically throughout the season, we have a slower riding group. Watch the s for the announcement of these outings. What do you need to ride with this fun outgoing bunch of Gang members? Besides the bicycle, CMC likes 6. Identification and medical card 7. Flat tire repair kit (replacement tube) 8. Map (City streets of Denver) 9. First Aid kit (include personal meds) 10. Small tool kit. RMOTHG Social Calendar Helmet 2. Water 3. Snacks 4. Sunglasses and sunscreen 5. Clothing for change in weather notices are sent out several days prior to the excursions to describe the weekly ride and the meeting location. An optional lunch will follow at a nearby restaurant. Most meeting times are 8:30 AM with departure at 9:00 AM. If you are a RMOTHG member interested in riding, please contact me by at bicycling.list@rmothg.org to be added to the cycling list. Pete Spandau Thanks to the folks who have volunteered to plan and organize a social event for our club this year. We re excited to see so many folks step up to the plate and help out. We have a variety of events planned that we hope will be of interest to many of our members. The events will be posted to the CMC site approximately one month prior to the actual date. Stay tuned for more details on exact date and times. It is designed to quickly push you up the learning curve by presenting the basic rules of nature photography that can dramatically improve your outdoor photographs. The first day walks you through the fundamentals with lots of examples of how a simple application of a rule can result in a completely different and more attractive photo. The second day (which is optional) will be a field day in Roxborough State Park where you can apply the concepts learned and see the results for yourself. The course works for all kinds of cameras from point and shoots to more sophisticated digital single lens reflex cameras. At the end of the two days, we think you will be pleased with how much you have learned. Enrollment is limited to twenty so that everyone gets individual attention. The cost is $40 for both the day of instruction as well as the field day. There is no discount for skipping the field day. You can sign up on the CMC website under the classes heading. We are recommending the purchase of either of two books. One is an e-book and the other one is hard copy book. 1. 8 Hill Topics APR 2013 PAGE 8 of 8 TRIP PARTICIPATION: HAVING A POSITIVE, SUPPORTIVE, FLEXIBLE ATTITUDE Adapted from CMC s WTS Student s Manual ~ Joe Leahy When you sign up to participate on a trip, you are acknowledging that the trip leader is the de facto leader. With that said, you have an obligation on your part to support this person and to try to make the trip successful. A successful trip requires a team effort and there are expectations for each individual: Be Prepared. Preparation not only includes having the 10 essentials in your pack, it also includes all the skills you may have to use. Refreshing your first aid, map and compass skills, etc. is your responsibility. Be on Time. This goes beyond being on time at the car pooling lot. When hiking, there will be breaks to rest, eat and drink, potty, etc. During the break, there is casual conversation and occasionally our minds wander. When the leader says that the group needs to continue hiking, be ready to go! Contribute to Orderly Conduct. We all experience occasional frustration while hiking. Sometimes it s too hot or too cold or sometimes the group moves too fast or too slow. Some people talk too much. There is just no pleasing all of us. Good (diplomatic) communication is important and can be quite useful to reduce everyone s frustrations. Don t just whine and complain. A better approach would be to announce your concerns to the group, or the leader in private. This allows the leader the chance to do something. They may slow the pace or take longer breaks, etc. People like to help and will usually agree on what needs to be done to solve a problem, resulting in a positive experience for all. Provide Feedback. Feedback is essential for good communication. It can prevent breakdowns in teamwork. There are no guarantees that your concerns will be resolved, but not communicating gives no one an opportunity to help. On the other side, positive and complementary feedback to participants is always welcome. Your trip leader works hard to make a successful trip. Providing encouragement and support gives them insight into what they are doing right. You can also your compliment to CMC at this address: Compliments&Complaints@hikingdenver.net. Practice the Golden Rule. Everyone is at a different place in experience or conditioning. Each of us should think about how we would like to be treated, and then apply that to others on a trip. Each individual on a trip is responsible for creating a positive experience for all.
