4 What To Wear / Bring Base Layers - preferably wool or synthetic material NO COTTON it doesn t dry or breath well. Snow Pants or Waterproof Hiking Pants with warm layers underneath. Warm Winter Coat (waterproof exterior) with a mid layer underneath. Waterproof Hiking Boots & Wool or synthetic socks - avoid Cotton! Backpack / Water Blatter 2L minimum - preferably 3 Liters Winter Hat/Beanie that covers ears, waterproof winter gloves, neck gator if you have it, Sunglasses, Headlamp, 10 Essentials

5 What I Provide For You If you need base layers & mid layers let me know Snowshoes, Poles, Microspikes, Gators I bring automatically - If you have your own hiking poles bring themif you need waterproof pants, coat, hat, gloves let me know If you need waterproof hiking boots we have limited sizes so let me know as early as possible. Backpack / Water Bladder (new nozzles) if you need let me know Wool Socks, Headlamps, (I will carry Med Kit - you can leave yours at home) I will provide lunch, bowls/cutlery & hot cocoa/mugs but please try to bring your water bladders full of water as there is no water past Ranger Station.

6 Parking / Tram Tickets For Driving Directions Visit The Palm Spring Aerial Tram Website but it s pretty easy right off Hwy 111 Parking is $ If you would like to avoid the parking fee you will need to arrive between 6:30am-7am. I will be in the upper parking lot from 6:30am-7:30am you will need to meet me here to pick up your gear, grab breakfast and coffee before heading up to the Tram. I drive a grey 4-Runner and my cell is: DO NOT BUY TRAM TICKETS ONLINE - the earliest Tram through the online booking tool is 9am. We need you on the 8am Tram; which is first come first serve walk in only. Tram tickets are not included in the price you paid to sign up for this event. You need to purchase that separate for $25.95 at the Tram ticket counter morning of arrival. Plan on all of us being on the 8am Tram (worst case scenario if it is full we take the 8:20am Tram) The adventure won t start without you. If you have AAA use it for a discount.

7 Weather Conditions / Gear I will send out detailed weather condition hours prior to event that will include snow pack. Prepare and plan for all weather conditions: snow, cold, sunshine, wind, etc. Proper base layers are key to staying dry and warm. If you need to call me to go over what you are wearing please do so. The material it is made out of is VERY important. Do Not Wear Cotton! As much wool / synthetic and waterproof you can do the better. I will provide anything you don t have - but I need to know in advance what you don t have. My Group ALWAYS stay warm & dry! I also need to know your weight so I can plan your snowshoes accordingly.

8 Trail Details / What To Expect Meet in parking lot by 7am. Find me in the upper parking lot - I drive a Silver 4-Runner with roof rack and Military decals. I will issue you your gear & equipment. I will also have breakfast bars, coffee and hot cocoa. We will head to the Tram at 7:30am. If you miss the group there we re-group at the top of the TRAM - head downstairs and outside, take the paved (icy sidewalk this time of year) to the bottom and walk to the Ranger Station; you will see a white building with pic-nic tables outside. We will be here from 8:15am-9:00am. We will do a clothing and gear check during that time. My cell doesn t work well in this area. Around 9:00am we will do a Safety Brief and get underway Snowshoeing. You will start out at an elevation of 8,500. Having just come from the desert floor you may experience elevation sickness for the first half of the day we take it easy so you can acclimate to the elevation. Elevation sickness can occur more quickly in colder temperatures so we are cautions of that. We will stay on the Desert View Trail for the Snowshoeing portion of this adventure which is a little over a 2 mile loop and relatively flat. This will give you an opportunity to get acclimated to snowshoeing, elevation and snow conditions. We will break for lunch around 11:30 back at the Ranger Station at the pic-nic tables. Lunch is an interactive cooking excercise where you will be learning how to cook in a group on an MSR Backcountry Cook Stove. We will be making chili with all the fixings and will have french bread on the side with cookies for desert. If you have food allergies let me know. After lunch we will begin our winter snow hike on the Round Valley Trail that heads toward Wellman Divide. We may not make it all the way to WD; but we won t go further than that. The elevation gain will be no more than 600 and the hiking distance will not exceed 6.5 miles; though I anticipate closer to 5 miles. The maximum elevation we will reach is 9,700. We will not be attempting the summit on this trip. This trip is designed for the beginner snowshoer / hiker in mind and our goal is to gain knowledge in winter conditions and feel comfortable in snowshoes and hiking in snow.

9 Snowshoeing You will learn a lot about snowshoeing: how the sizes work, what to look for when you buy a pair, different styles based on different terrain, how to maneuver through various terrain, how to be safe and some general backcountry knowledge.

10 Lunch I will provide lunch along with all equipment for cooking/eating. It will be cold out, so we will be having some hot Chili & cheese (temperature hot, not spicy hot), fresh baked bread and dessert. If you have any allergies or dietary restrictions please let me know so I can do something different for your lunch. You are welcome to bring trail snacks and I always carry extras for the Group as well. You are required to have 2L of water but preferably 3L so you have extra for lunch.

11 Hiking During the hiking portion we will be learning about Leave No Trace. I will also have toiletry items on me so you don t need to pack that if you don t want to. We will be learning about some general winter safety and best practices in the backcountry. In addition we will talk about clothing, layering, gear, what to look for when you buy, types of conditions and gear for those conditions, what to pack, what not to pack, 10 essentials and some general safety knowledge. We anticipate being back to the Tram around 4pm just as the sun is setting.
