3 Hiking Looking ahead a couple of weeks for the primo end of season hike, let's get started with some preliminary planning. The itinerary for the overnight at the YMCA of the Rockies Estes Park Center is as follows: Wednesday, October 4, 2017 Lunch - The Other Side, 900 Moraine Avenue, Estes Park, CO - 11:00AM Carpooling to Cub Lake trailhead meeting location - Beaver Meadows Visitor Center, Park Headquarters, 1000 US hwy 36,Estes Park, CO - 1:00PM Check-in YMCA of the Rockies Estes Park Center, Everhart Reunion Cabin, 2515 Tunnel Road, Estes Park, CO - 3:00PM Happy Hour and potluck chili dinner, Everhart Reunion Cabin - 5:00PM Spend the night. Space available in the 6 bedroom, 6 bath cabin. $40.00 per person. 2 spaces available The Cub Lake hike is 8 miles with and elevations gain of 540 feet rated moderate, starting at the trailhead off of Bear Lake Road at Bob Brunson's secret parking lot. Maps available at lunch or the visitor center with identification of trailhead. Short hike available through the meadow to the point where the climb starts that eliminates the elevation gain. As the chili dinner is potluck, plan on bringing a pot of chili, an appetizer, salad or side dish, cornbread, chili toppings or dessert. As always it is bring your own beverages. Also bring your own breakfast if you are staying overnight. I am now taking sign-ups for one or all of the above. Please Phyllis Sjogren at pasjogren@aol.com if you will be at lunch, the visitor center parking lot for carpooling, hike trailhead, chili dinner (and what you are bringing for dinner) or staying overnight. I currently have 14 of the 16 spaces filled at the cabin for the overnight. Let's go hiking in this wonderful fall weather to enjoy our end of season finale. 4 Biking BikeMeister October 2017 Schedule.. A bike is always more than the sum of its physical parts. But when those parts have been styled, shaped and crafted to perfection, it s hard not to get excited. When form and function come together beautifully in the smooth curve of a handlebar or the lines of a sleek, slender frame even the untrained eye gets a little wider. Bike Porn, Volume I Our rides are on Mondays and may start at different times depending on the location of the ride. Be sure to check the SkiMeisters Biking Blog and/or your s the weekend prior for the latest information on the upcoming ride. Helmets are mandatory. Bring water, a snack, spare tube(s), tire patches, an air pump and tools. Rides start on the hour. Plan to be at the start point early enough to set-up your bike and be ready to ride. These rides are among friends and SkiMeisters assumes no responsibility. Check your bike! We want everyone to be able to ride safely and have fun without any equipment malfunctions. If you have not done so, you should get your bike in for a maintenance check and/or a tune-up. Possible Mountain Driving Delays - Mountain rides involving I-70 are noted on the following schedule by a (#). As a reminder check CDOT information for possible I-70 delays due to tunnels, bridge and/or road/shoulder improvements. The information is updated daily at 10:00 AM and the phone number is 511. The website is If any of the above are scheduled, you may want to allow at least an extra 30 minutes of travel time. Easy/Take-It-Easy Rides - These are for cyclists on selected rides throughout the BikeMeisters season. These are for the cyclist who wants a shorter ride at a slower pace with an occasional stop to check-out a point-of-interest. The Easy/Take-It-Easy rides and are planned for many of the rides throughout our season. Newbie Cyclists - per the suggestion of a fellow SkiMeister, we introduced a new program several years ago for the individual who wants to start cycling, but wants to build-up their confidence on how-to-do-it! We will schedule special sessions, as needed, throughout our BikeMeisters season. If you are interested in attending a session, contact Steve Burkholder at steveburkholder@q.com. Participation - All full members may participate as often as they wish. ADM s, people on the wait list and guests (who must sign a release prior to riding) are all welcome as a guest of a member with a limitation of two (2) events per season. Don t forget to wear your SkiMeister name tags and ALWAYS check start times! Contacts: Steve Burkholder: (c) September 2017 Page 4

10 Downhill Ski Trip Steamboat Springs January 29, - February 2, 2018 The response to this trip has been overwhelming. There are more than a couple dozen folks on the wait list. Do not send in anymore deposits/coupons to get on the wait list. The first 110 folks have been notified that they made the cut. Unfortunately we have to limit the size of the group due to the capacity of the conference room at Trappeurs. For those currently going, the balance of the $375 is due by October 15, $200 deposit was required earlier. Your committee is working hard to make this a fun week for all. Contact Dave Lisson for the committee at dlisson@comcast.net 2018 XC Getaway in the Black Hills of South Dakota February 21 26, 2018 Cross country skiing in the Black Hills National Forest, a visit to Mt. Rushmore (hopefully with snow dusting the faces), and a hiking day in the Badlands! Maybe a stop at Jewel Cave on our return trip. South Dakota is our destination for cross country skiing and snowshoeing February 21-26, Richard, our congenial and informative bus driver who took us twice to Yellowstone and once to Bryce Canyon, is looking forward to being our driver again. We will ride by chartered deluxe bus as far as Rapid City on Wednesday, February 21, with the plan to stop on the way for some exploring at Mt. Rushmore National Memorial and then driving east to hike and view the Badlands National Park the next morning. That afternoon, we ll head over to Deadwood (probably not dead while we re there!) for 3 days of cross country skiing through pine, aspen and birch in 2 different trail systems of the Black Hills National Forest. The areas are rated easy to difficult, with separate snowshoeing trails. On Monday, February 26, if conditions permit, we ll stop at one of the Cave National Parks and then relax for the ride all the way home. The cost, which includes accommodations for all 5 nights, all the skiing and snowshoeing (including a donation for the trail grooming), most breakfasts and dinners, bus transportation to and from the Denver area and all in between, and all gratuities, is estimated to be about $850 per person. Our group will max out at 56, so as usual, the postmark date on your reservation will determine your place in line! Reserve your spot now by sending in the coupon with a deposit of $200 per person. Since September 2017 Page 10
11 plans have to be made far in advance, this is nonrefundable unless there is someone on the waitlist to take your place (rarely a problem). All full members get first priority; if space becomes available, then this will be open to ADMs, people on the waitlist and other guests. As a part of the SkiMeister Cross Country Program, this trip is for cross country skiers, with snowshoers also welcome. Koby Kellogg with questions at kklogg@aol.com.
