2 Wildflower Rambles Summer 2017 Sunday, May 28 Bald Mountain - Leader: Boulder County Parks and Open Space volunteer naturalist Diane G. 10:00 AM to noon. Meet to carpool at 9:40 AM at the Centennial Trailhead parking lot just up and across Sunshine Canyon Drive from Mt. Sanitas or go directly to Bald Mountain Open Space for the 10:00 AM meet-up. Four miles from the Centennial Trailhead parking lot to Bald Mountain. A 1.5-mile easy trail walk through forest and meadows in search of spring wildflowers in a zone of geological and biological transition. Part of this open space burned in the Four Mile Canyon fire of 2010 and each year new plants return and a new dominant emerges on the landscape. To reach Bald Mountain, take Mapleton Avenue west past Mt. Sanitas and up Sunshine Canyon Drive (County Road 52). Bald Mountain is approximately 5 miles west of Boulder on the left (south) side of the road. There is a picnic area, so bring a lunch, if you wish. Restroom on site. Carpool fee: $1.00. Friday, June 2 Shanahan Ridge Leaders: Diane G and Judy L, 8:30 AM Go west on Table Mesa Drive from Broadway toward NCAR, turn left on Lehigh St. and go south to Lafayette Dr. Park on Lafayette or Lehigh (limited). Google Lehigh Street Boulder for a map. Meet on the sidewalk near the stairway accessing the trail on Lehigh. Penstemons will hopefully be out in profusion. No carpool fee. Wednesday, June 7 Finch Lake via Allenspark Trailhead Leaders: Maddy G and Linda P Meet 8:30 AM at 3 Margaritas at Iris and 28 th to carpool. This moderate trail takes off from the Allenspark Trailhead. No RMNP fee. The distance to Finch Lake is 7 miles round trip (out and back, total elevation gain 1,850 feet). We will be rambling and the distance you go is up to you. The first 0.8 mile up a ridge has been noted for quite a few spring and early summer wildflowers, including columbines. The trail continues on through montane forest, through the Ousel burn of 1978 and on to the subalpine Finch Lake. It is also a good trail for spotting wildlife and views of Mt. Meeker. - Carpool fee: $7.00 Thursday June 29, Caribou Townsite - Leaders: Judy L, Maddy G and Dolores A. 7:45 AM. This is one of Dolores favorite spots and she knows her way around (it is confusing). She also knows where to find shooting stars. Meet at Meadows Shopping Center parking lot near Anytime Fitness (southeast corner) where the FSC Thursday hikers meet. Carpool fee: $4.00. The Rambles Leaders (there is a team of 8 of us) recognize that there are many levels of expertise and pace among the people interested in wildflowers and also recognize that we will get strung out on our route because of that. Some want general information about the flowers and others are into keying them out. Rambles are not meant to be hikes. Our rambles policy is to provide several leaders to accommodate faster, moderate and ambling paces. You are welcome to go as far as your interest or physical condition take you. Judy s Hikes 2017 May 31 st (Wednesday), Wild Basin, to look for Orchids and then on to Where ever. Please meet at Margaritas at 7:30am. For more info call Judy L June 25 th ( Sunday), Dorothy Lake from Fourth of July trail head. Meet at the Justice Center parking lot at 7AM to car pool bring lunch and rain gear, & water.
