1 Flatirons Ski Club May, 2017 An Outdoor Multi Sports & Social Group General Meetings are the Unitarian Universalist Church 5001 Pennsylvania AV, Boulder, CO Message from the President: We've had many new members join the club. I'd like to take on kind of an outreach to them. There has sometimes been confusion around trip sign ups, deposits and payment, carpooling, roommates and other elements. If you are a relatively new member, I'd like to talk to you about what the experience has been like and how we might address some of the issues. We could also set up a buddy system. For that, I am hoping that experienced members of the club might step forward. Please contact me if you're willing to participate in either capacity. Sincerely, your Prez, Donna Please Welcome Our New Vice President, Nancy Nancy is a 3 year FSC member for 3 years and credits the FSC for making her Bucket List smaller. Originally from Kansas, Nancy enjoyed 23 years as a public health nurse and has traveled and lived in Europe and Asia. Since retiring to Colorado and Nancy has generously given of her time doing local volunteer work. Nancy has volunteered as a Boulder County naturalist, a foster parent, a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and is currently mentoring a child in the I Have a Dream Foundation. In addition to other sports, Nancy cycles, kayaks and skis. Her latest interests are learning Spanish and to play the mountain dulcimer. 3 SPRING 2017 Wildflower Rambles Saturday, May 6 Legion Park Leader: Boulder County Parks and Open Space. 10:00 AM to noon. Meet at Legion Park Open Space, east of Boulder on Arapahoe Road, 0.5 miles west of 75 th St. Volunteer BPOS naturalists will lead an easy stroll through pinyon and ponderosa pines. Great view of the Continental Divide and unusual early season wildflowers. Saturday, May 13 Rabbit Mountain - Leader: Boulder County Parks and Open Space volunteer naturalist Diane. 10:00 AM to noon. Meet at Rabbit Mountain Open Space, northeast of Lyons on north 55 th Street, at the group picnic shelter. A great place for spring wildflowers in the transitional foothills life zone. Moderate 2-mile route from grassland to ponderosa pine and mountain mahogany shrub land. Wednesday, May 17 Denver Botanic Garden - Leader: TBA. Meet at 9:00 AM at Meadows Shopping Center (Foothills and Baseline where the FSC Thursday hikers meet) in the SE corner of the parking lot near Anytime Fitness. Leisurely amble to view the spring gardens and the Calder Monumental outdoor sculpture exhibit to about lunchtime. Perhaps, one or more carpools will stay at DBG later for lunch and more flowers (optional). Saturday, May 28 Bald Mountain - Leader: Boulder County Parks and Open Space volunteer naturalist Diane. Ten AM to noon. Meet to carpool at 9:40 AM at the Centennial Trailhead parking lot just up and across Sunshine Canyon Drive from Mt. Sanitas or go directly to Bald Mountain Open Space for the 10:00 AM meet-up. A 1.5-mile trail walk through forest and meadows in search of spring wildflowers. Part of this open space burned in the Four Mile Canyon fire of 2010 and each year new plants return and become dominant on the landscape. To reach Bald Mountain, take Mapleton Avenue west past Mt. Sanitas and up Sunshine Canyon Drive (County Road 52). Bald Mountain is approximately 5 miles west of Boulder on the left (south) side of the road. There is a picnic area, so bring a lunch, if you wish. The rambles leaders (there is a team of 8 of us) recognize that there are many levels of expertise and pace among the people interested in wildflowers and also recognize that we will get strung out on our route because of that. Some want general information about the flowers and others are into keying them out. Rambles are not meant to be hikes. Our rambles policy is to provide several leaders to accommodate faster, moderate and ambling paces. You are welcome to go as far as your interest or physical condition take you. Third THURSDAY HIKERS Thursday, May 18th RMNP Trail Ridge Road. The road is clear of snow and closed to traffic. This is a magnificent walk at high elevation, from Rainbow Curve.
