Hiking 2017 Scheduled Hikes Welcome to the 2017 SkiMeisters Hiking Season. As the preliminary schedule for May and June is finalized, everyone has the opportunity to add their favorite hike, help someone on the schedule or select a hike to lead from the suggestions listed by Phyllis Sjogren, Hiking Coordinator, and Assistants, Susan Niles and Anita Fowler. As changes are made the website and blog will be updated to reflect the latest information. Watch for hiking s on the weekend before each Wednesday hike. The most up-to-date information regarding meeting times and places will be there. To keep a fun and safe environment for SkiMeisters the following rights and responsibilities should be reviewed and respected: July 2017 Page 2

Hiker Responsibility Hikers should acquaint themselves with hike details and be sure it is within their ability. Each hiker must accept responsibility for his/her own safety. Hikers MUST NOT: go ahead of the hike leader; fall behind the sweep or leave the party at any time for any reason without advising the hike leader, a co-leader or other designated agent. Each hiker must carry appropriate clothing, food and water for the planned trip. This includes rain gear (Colorado mountain weather is unpredictable). For safety reasons, you must wear hiking boots. Hikers will stay on marked trails. Hikers should bring lunch unless otherwise instructed in the schedule (occasionally we eat out and occasionally lunch is provided.) For safety reasons, dogs are not allowed on SkiMeister scheduled hikes If a member hiker brings a guest, it is that member s duty to hike with and stay with his guest at all times. The member must call the hike leader to advise them that they will be bringing a guest. All guests will be required to sign a release form. This form can be printed from this website by a member prior to the hike. Hiking Opportunities The 2017 SkiMeister Hiking Schedule has 3 open dates for volunteers to lead their favorite hike with fellow SkiMeister hikers. Please review the schedule to add or repeat a hike for Wednesday, September 6, 20 or 27. Thank you! 5 Hiking Coordinators Phyllis Sjogren Anita Fowler Susan Niles Biking BikeMeisters Aug - Sept 2017 Schedule.. A bike is always more than the sum of its physical parts. But when those parts have been styled, shaped and crafted to perfection, it s hard not to get excited. When form and function come together beautifully in the smooth curve of a handlebar or the lines of a sleek, slender frame even the untrained eye gets a little wider. Bike Porn, Volume I Our rides are on Mondays and may start at different times depending on the location of the ride. Be sure to check the SkiMeisters Biking Blog and/or your s the weekend prior for the latest information on the upcoming ride. Helmets are mandatory. Bring water, a snack, spare tube(s), tire patches, an air pump and tools. Rides start on the hour. Plan to be at the start point early enough to set-up your bike and be ready to ride. These rides are among friends and SkiMeisters assumes no responsibility. Check your bike! We want everyone to be able to ride safely and have fun without any equipment malfunctions. If you have not done so, you should get your bike in for a maintenance check and/or a tune-up. Possible Mountain Driving Delays - Mountain rides involving I-70 are noted on the following schedule by a (#). As a reminder check CDOT information for possible I-70 delays due to tunnels, bridge and/or road/shoulder improvements. The information is updated daily at 10:00 AM and the phone number is 511. The website is If any of the above are scheduled, you may want to allow an extra 30 minutes of travel time. Easy/Take-It-Easy Rides - These are for cyclists on selected rides throughout the BikeMeisters season. These are for the cyclist who wants a shorter ride at a slower pace with an occasional stop to check-out a point-of-interest. The Easy/Take-It-Easy rides are noted on the following schedule (*) and are planned for many of the rides throughout our season. Newbie Cyclists - per the suggestion of a fellow SkiMeister, we introduced a new program several years ago for the individual who wants to start cycling, but wants to build-up their confidence on how-to-do-it! We will schedule special sessions, as needed, throughout our BikeMeisters season. If you are interested in attending a session, contact Steve Burkholder at steveburkholder@q.com. July 2017 Page 5

Participation - All full members may participate as often as they wish. ADM s, people on the wait list and guests (who must sign a release prior to riding) are all welcome as a guest of a member with a limitation of two (2) events per season. Annual Aspen-Glenwood Bike Trip after six years and active participation, we have decided not to schedule an Aspen-Glenwood Trip this year. We are working on a new and exciting alternative for 2018! Don t forget to wear your SkiMeister name tags and ALWAYS check start times! 7 Drive to the end, take a left and then an immediate right into the parking lot. There is a nice restroom at the lot. Strenuous - This is a 25 mile ride to/from Montezuma many of you have been waiting for!! The uphill climb is one to remember and the downhill run is exhilarating! Aug 14 10:00 AM Lake Dillon/Swan Mountain(#) Dave Sheets, (c) Marty Sheets, (c) Meet at the Frisco Marina Parking Lot in downtown Frisco and ride around Lake Dillon. Take Exit 203 from I-70. Follow Highway 9 to Frisco's Main Street (5 stop lights down) and turn left into the Marina. (We will meet in the parking lot by the playground.) There are clean restrooms there. Strenuous: We ll ride clockwise around Lake Dillon and meet back in the Frisco Marina Parking Lot. This is a very pretty ride including the Swan Mountain bike path on the East side of Swan Mountain. It is an all-paved bike path except a 2-mile descent down the West side of Swan Mountain on the highway. That portion is fairly steep and you need to keep up your July 2017 Page 7

Aug 21 10:00 A Heeney Road(#) Claire Buhl, (c) Barb Jansen, (c) speed on the downhill side until you reach the "Farmers Corner" intersection. (Based on previous rides, that should be NO problem!!) There is a little surprise after you leave the high school, but it doesn t last very long!!. The ride is about 19 miles long and the altitude gain is about 1220ft. Easy: Take-It-Easy (*) cyclists can ride around part of the lake from Frisco Marina to Dillon Marina or Keystone and return the same way they came. It s a great route and no major hills to climb! We ll have lunch after the ride at Dave and Marty s home where they will host us with a BBQ. Please RSVP by August 11 th if you plan on attending. Please bring a dish (salad, chips, beans, etc.) to share with everyone, and bring your own beverage. Directions will be handed out at the Marina after the ride. Meet at the intersection of County Road 9 to Kremmling and CR30, the Heeney Road., to Heeney. (Where else would the Heeney Road go to you may ask??) Parking is available on both sides of CR9. The intersection is approximately 13 miles north of Silverthorne on CR 9. The 20 mile bike route is paved and rolling, but nothing too steep. Moderate: Although this is a hilly ride on a county road, it is an out-and back route. Easy: The Take-It-Easy cyclist (*) should have an enjoyable ride and can go as far as he or she would like. Lunch will be after the ride at the Dam Brewery in Dillon. Aug 28 9:00 AM Cherry Creek / Parker Ken Decker, (c), Karen Kriefels, Meet at Cottonwood Park near Jordan Rd. & E From Jordan Rd. exit and E-470, go North a short distance on Jordan Rd to Cottonwood Dr. Then turn right/east on Cottonwood Dr. a short distance to Apache Plume Drive and turn left/north. After about 1/10 th of a mile, turn right into the park (opposite Green Grass Way). July 2017 Page 8

Moderate: This is always a very popular ride. We will ride south on the Cherry Creek Trail (mostly paved) and back with no big hills for a total of 31 miles. Easy: The Take-It-Easy (*) cyclists will meet in the same place and will ride a shorter route at a slower pace. Sep 4 Sep 11 9:00 AM Please bring your own picnic lunch to enjoy at Cottonwood Park. Labor Day NO RIDE-There is no ride this week. Be sure to hang out your flag. Evergreen / Soda Creek Sandy Bruggeman, (c) Arnold Fridland, (c) Meet in the parking lot at the Buchanan/Evergreen Recreation Center located at Ellingwood Trail, Evergreen/Bergen Park, CO Take I-70 to the Evergreen exit and drive towards Evergreen on highway 74. After passing around Bergen Park, take the Squaw Pass intersection left/east on Ellingwood to the Rec Center. (Not up Squaw Pass!). Moderate: This is a beautiful, but hilly, 14 mile ride through the Soda Creek area, along old Highway 40, past El Rancho and returning on the bike lane of Evergreen Parkway. Easy: The Take-It-Easy (*) cyclists will enjoy a shorter and less hilly ride. We will all enjoy lunch at Da Kind Soup in Evergreen after the ride. Sep 18 10:00 AM Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) (#) Carolyn Kleinke, (h) We will meet outside the west entrance to RMNP at the Kawuneeche Visitor s Center, just beyond Grand Lake. This start location has two advantages: public restrooms and it eliminates the toughest hill on the ride out of Grand Lake. The ride will be slightly shorter but just as beautiful. Remember to bring your Park pass to get though the entry gate. One pass is good for 4 bicyclists. This is great opportunity to see the changing colors of the park, abundant wildlife, and a dusting of snow (??) on the mountains. July 2017 Page 9

Moderate: This ride will be about 22 miles and of moderate difficulty. Easy: There will not be a separate Take it Easy (*) ride this week. Sep 25 10:00 AM Vail Pass / Vail Valley (#) Joe Pigman, (c), Anne Burkholder (c) There are many great restaurants in Grand Lake, to be chosen from at a later date. We will meet at 2 different parking lots. Easy riders meet at the East Vail Parking Lot (exit 180) from I-70. Turn left under I-70 and wind left again and the parking lot is on your left (very close to the exit). The parking lot is on the south side of I-70 and on the north side of Big Horn Road. Parking spaces are limited to 15 spots, so car pool if possible. Strenuous riders will also get off at exit 180, going past the 1 st parking lot and continue up Buck Horn Rd. (paralleling back up I-70). Parking area is just under I70. Strenuous: The trail is short, but steep and is about 8 miles each way, stretching from East Vail to the top of Vail Pass with an elevation gain of 1,831 feet. We'll ride to the top, take a break and then it's downhill all the way back to East Vail for a total of about 16 miles. Moderate/Easy: The Take it Easy riders will ride into Vail and back. Lunch will be afterwards at a restaurant chosen by the group. BikeMeisters NOBODY IS TOO FAST, NOBODY IS TOO SLOW, EVERYONE IS WELCOMED July 2017 Page 10
