12 Page 20 On My Night Stand: On My Nightstand KEVIN MCMANUS WFMD News Reporter The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William L. Shirer, This is a 1600-page book, but a very easy read. Shirer was a newspaper and later broadcast journalist for the CBS Radio Network. He lived in Germany and witnessed the rise of the Nazi Party and Adolph Hitler. This provided him and the reader with a wealth of detail, including Hitler s Munich Beer Hall Putsch in the 1920 s, his imprisonment and his eventual rise to power. Shirer had access to much of the archives of the Nazis, and spent five-and-a-half years shifting through them in writing this fascinating book, which has been republished several times. Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by Erik Larson, Dead Wake covers the sinking of the passenger ship Lusitania, which was on a cruise from New York to Liverpool when it was sunk by a torpedo from a German U-Boat on May 7th, The voyage was almost at an end when the sinking occurred and 1,195 out of 1,959 lost their lives. World War I was raging in Europe and other parts of the world, but even during wartime, many civilians had thought that it was not civilized to attack passenger ships which were not armed. However, the German Embassy had taken out an advertisement in American newspapers cautioning anyone boarding the Lusitania that any ship in the waters around Britain and Ireland were fair game for its U-Boats. This incident destroyed that notion of war being waged on a civilized basis, and almost brought the US into World War I. This book is currently on the best-sellers list, and I would recommend it for any interested reader, as this is the 100th anniversary of the event. JANET VOGEL Youth Services Coordinator, Frederick County Public Libraries I typically read multiple books at the same time, including one by my nightstand and one book on CD in my car. I try to read a variety of types of books so that I can recommend them to friends, colleagues, or children who visit the library. Lately, I have been reading a lot of historical and historical fiction titles. Currently, I am listening to The Things they Carried by Tim O Brien, which is The Big Read selection for FCPL and MPT. This collection of semi-autobiographical short stories follows infantrymen and shares their experience in the Vietnam War. It is a powerful book that was also recommended to me a few years ago by one of my students when I was teaching a college course about United States history. As a youth services librarian, I also keep up with popular books for children and teens. My current choice is The Family Romanov by Candace Fleming. This award-winning title details the fall of the Romanov family in early-20th century Russia and also shares the plight of peasants living in this difficult time period. Using photographs, letters, and other primary sources, this title demonstrates the increasingly high quality of nonfiction being produced for young people today.
